James Dobson Vetoes The Thompson Nomination

For all the noise and fury about MoveOn “owning” the Democratic party, the right and the MSM totally ignore the veto power the extremist theocon right holds over the Republican party. One of their chief clerics, James Dobson (the guy who advised followers to beat their children like he beat a dog) is off the Fred Thompson bandwagon.

James Dobson, one of the nation’s most politically influential evangelical Christians, made it clear in a message to friends this week he will not support Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson.

In a private e-mail obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, Dobson accuses the former Tennessee senator and actor of being weak on the campaign trail and wrong on issues dear to social conservatives.

“Isn’t Thompson the candidate who is opposed to a Constitutional amendment to protect marriage, believes there should be 50 different definitions of marriage in the U.S., favors McCain-Feingold, won’t talk at all about what he believes, and can’t speak his way out of a paper bag on the campaign trail?” Dobson wrote.

“He has no passion, no zeal, and no apparent ‘want to.’ And yet he is apparently the Great Hope that burns in the breasts of many conservative Christians? Well, not for me, my brothers. Not for me!”

In the past they’ve been sort of pragmatic, backing candidates who are able to hide the craziness enough to hold off mainstream America from talks of saving babies and replacing the constitution with the bible. But you get the sense that after being jerked around by Bush promising to end gay marriage then forgetting about it right after he was sworn in, they’re looking for the real thing.

In other words, Alan Keyes, your base is calling.

  1. Didn’t they say the same thing about Giuliani? Aren’t they one and two on the depth chart for the Republicans?

And Mitt’s a *shudder* Mormon, and we already know how they feel about McCain.

This is Brownback’s bloc to lose.

  3. “This is Brownback’s bloc to lose.”

He would lose to Kucinich. Hell, Thompson could lose to Kucinich.

  4. SpiderJ says:

I mean the voting bloc–that right now, Brownback may be the only candidate that Dobson and Co. can trust to keep our nation right with Jee-sus.

    Dobson support Keyes?

I think there must be a line from Blazing Saddles that fits here.

So according to Dobson, Thompson opposing the Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution=Thompson believing there should be 50 different definitions of marriage in the U.S. I’ll take ridiculous and bizarre conclusions for $100, Alex.

Me thinks Dobson himself may need to run since I don’t see anyone passing the fruitcake smell test.

Hope he enjoys the taste of Mop N Glow
