Why did they leave out the rest of Blitzer’s question? The part about the monetary investment, which is what Boehner was actually responding to?
You’re right, I’m much more relieved that Boehner only thinks a half trillion dollars is a small price to pay for…whatever it is we’re winning in Iraq.
It’s tin-eared to use the phrase in any context. Had he any real understanding of what the war has cost us, he’d never have used the phrase at all.
Let’s say that Boehner was only referring to the financial aspect of Blitzer’s two-part question. I remember that some conservatives were apoleptic when then-President Clinton referred to the spending of taxpayers’ money as an “investment” (examples: Republican congressman Dana Rohrabacher and then-columnist Tony Snow).
