Dr. Who

I’ve heard for years now about Dr. Who but never watched because even though I’m a comic book geek/nerd I’m not wild about sci-fi tv shows (I liked Quantum Leap and Star Trek: TNG). But I didn’t know until last weekend when BBC America had a marathon of shows that it was about time travel.
Time travel? I’m in. I love time travel stories. Whether it’s running into historical figures, alternate timelines (Biff Tannen runs a casino????) or just general chronal tomfoolery, I’m all for it. Love the time travel genre, and while the special effects in this current incarnation of Dr. Who could do with an upgrade, I’m watching. And I see that this woman (Freema Agyeman) is going to be featured. Let’s go into the Tardis, mates.

Did you watch Buffy? Man, Buffy rocked. Hard. Really. No kidding. If you didn’t catch it, get the DVDs and watch at least the first three seasons. Minimum.
You should check out the ones from the 60′s and 70′s too. This newer BBC series does the old ones much justice.
You’ve got about 15 seasons to catch up on.
The latest Doctor Who episodes often have great subversive messages. In one episode, where the Prime Minister has been replaced by an alien who is trying to start a war against fake aliens who, he claims, have space weapons of mass distruction, the Doctor actually directs a missile to Number 10 Downing Street to solve the problem. Yikes. If an American TV show had the correct solution be the destruction of the White House, it would be a huge scandal.
Upgrade?? UPGRADE?!?!
It’s obvious you have never watched Dr. Who before Oliver, because as someone who got hooked in High School back in the 80s the most unbelievable thing about this new series is how great an effects budget they have now compared to the old days. Seriously, most Dr.Who from the old days consisted of between 30-60% of running up and down the same corridor made of cardboard and tin foil.
And dayum, considering that later this season you’ll get to see no less a leading light of British cinema than Derek Jacobi (aka Claudius in “I,Claudius”, etc.) appear as… well I shouldn’t spoil who he appears as for those who haven’t seen it yet, but for old school fans it was a serious “throwing the horns” moment.
Oliver you must try to get hold of the earlier episodes staring Tom Baker. These are amazing tv shows that scared us all as kids in UK.
You forgot the bubble wrap spray painted green.
