I repeatedly have to inform my conservative colleagues who defend Bush’s abysmal ratings by pointing that Congress’s ratings are even more abysmal, that Bush’s ratings are only as high as they are because they are artificially propped up by lemming right-wingers who will ALWAYS approve of Bush no matter how badly he fucks up.
The Democratic congress, on the other hand, is having their feet held to the fire by their OWN supporters, who aren’t afraid to say that they’re doing a bad job when they are.
What is really insulting about this is the fact that the Dem Congress just passed their ethics bill with a “veto proof” majority. You know they will trumpet this at every opportunity to show how tremendously effective and honest they are and how they are bringing integrity back to Washington. Unfortunately, they are simultaneously dragging the bar for what constitutes ethical (and even Constitutional) behavior into the mud. The gutless political calculation going on is disgusting. Clearly they care more about manipulating perception and winning in 2008 then shoring up our collapsing (both literally and figuratively) Republic. The Dems need an ’08 smack to the head almost as much as the GOP, it seems.
The whole comparison between congressional and presidential approval ratings is just another one of the false equivalencies that right-wingers peddle.
Bush holds complete control over the executive.
The congressional leadership has to work around obstructionist filibustering republicans as well as weak and dopy members of their own party. Unlike the president, they can’t fire members and hire new ones who are more to their liking.
It’s up to us to do that for them. We won’t have a more effective congress until we vote in more democrats – and more real democrats.
