Well, these are good results.

The U.S. is making its first appearance in the World Championship of American Football, an event being held for only the third time.

So far, Team USA has defeated Korea (77-0) and Germany (33-7) with a squad coached by John Mackovic and made up mostly of players from smaller college programs.

The U.S. meets Japan for the title Sunday in Kawasaki, Japan.

Can someone explain how Japan got all the way to the finals?

Well who the hell else even plays the game to any great extent?

Actually, and though I don’t understand it either, Japan has been the defending champions for the last two years (the only tournament so far).

I guess they have all the sumo wrestlers to put in the offense line.

Must be the Way of the Warrior. Offensive and Defensive Line play is very much like Sumo wrestling.

Sumo Wrestlers and Ninjas. The only way to beat them is Cowboys and Pirates.

Bit odd, really. Canada at least has an awareness of the game — several college have teams, and they have their own football league, which aside from minor changes done just to be different, plays American football. I’d expect them to be better represented.

Japan also has incredibly strong rugby teams. Many universities offer scholarships to New Zealanders and pacific islanders to have them play. The next rugby world cup was nearly held there but New Zealand beat them out just barely.

I’ve seen some large, muscular Japanese men, there are definitely many exceptions to the stereotype.

Sumo stlye offensive linemen. Big and fast movers with excellent knowledge of balance and control. That’s just a wild guess. This event sounds like a joke though.

By beating Chrysler, GM, and Ford?

The U.S. beat who? Korea? In football?

    Wow. Hooray for us.

Er, the next rugby world cup is in France. But yes, Japan traditionally has a strong team.
