That should be the one word response to this.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki shrugged off U.S. doubts of his government’s military and political progress Saturday, saying Iraqi forces are capable and American troops can leave "anytime they want."

Why should we trust them? They didn’t even know they were in need of democracy until we made them take it.
Hell, at this point the Americans should take any out they can get. The situation is bad and getting much, much worse the longer you stay there.
No one knows for sure what will happen when the Americans leave, but it can hardly be much worse that it is now.
NOW, can we declare victory and come home?
Uh, wait, forgot about the oil…

I agree 100% Oliver, if they say they are ready, then we should pull stakes…..which begs the question. “When are they going to be ready? When they say they are ready, or when we say they are ready?”

Here’s the problem, as long as the United States is there, they will never be ready. Why train your own men to fight and die when the Americans will do it for you?
So I say use this as a reason to leave. Not all at once, but certainly start bringing the troops home.
Actually, CS, it will probably be worse. I don’t think it’s honest to deny that our absence will likely blow the powder keg once and for all. The thing is, I don’t think our presence is helping defuse the situation, and right now we’re standing right next to the imminent explosion.
It’s a fuckup all around, and our options are most likely that Iraq will end up being the next Iran (a Shiite mullah dominated nation that hates us) or the next Afghanistan (a country so wracked by war and violence that any warlord who promises to keep you alive becomes your leader for life).
Here’s your big opening, George Bush–declare the job finished and bring everybody home for a parade and a big barbecue at the ranch.
If the Iraqis can’t keep it under control–hey, you did what you could.
Didn’t Maleki say last week that they couldn’t hold out without the Americans?
