Rudy Giuliani: Health Care Is Like Buying A TV

You don’t want to think that a guy like Rudy Giuliani is really this stupid, but he is.

Asked about health insurance, Giuliani talked about television sets, saying the plummeting cost of a TV shows the power of the market.

We all know that vital medical care is just the same as catching "Heroes" each week. Then again, this is the "brilliant" mind that thought the criminally connected Bernard Kerik should oversee the entire country’s security from terrorism and other threats.

  1. There about twenty reasons why Giuliani’s argument is crappy, and I say this as someone who is generally pro-market.

Someone with the time should itemize them.

Better yet, let’s hear a better solution to the problems in the healthcare industry.

It’s easy to call somebody ’stupid’. As Oliver proves, any idiot can do that.

  3. Yawn... says:

Lots of people have had better ideas. Every industrialized nation in the world, for example, except us.

  4. DrPidgro says:

To Fred, watching an episode of ER is the same as going there.

To continue the quote, adding in the parts that Oliver conveniently omitted:

Health insurance should be more like home insurance and car insurance, he said, with “empowered consumers” buying their own plans, he said. He said he would provide tax incentives so people could afford coverage.

The idea of universal health care is “paternalistic” and impractical, he said.

“If you try to do socialized medicine, a la Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Barack Obama or Michael Moore, you’re going to end up with a disaster worse than welfare,” he said.

It’s a fact that when consumers have a choice, competition forces prices to fall. I’m not surprised that this concept is lost on most Democrats, because socialists have a hard time understanding how free enterprise works.

But hey, if you want the same bureaucracy that runs the Social Security Administration and FEMA to decide when you see a doctor, what kind of treatment you receive, and when you will receive it, then go for it. You deserve what you get.

  6. Duros62 says:

We have choices, Mike. They all suck.

  7. scott says:

yes, Rudy’s right, we’ll just outsource all our health care needs to low-cost-of-labor countries like China and Thailand, and our health care costs should plummet.

Of course, actually getting to Beijing to see your doctor may prove to be tricky, but Rudy’s a “vision” kind of guy. Doesn’t get bogged down in petty details.

  8. “But hey, if you want the same bureaucracy that runs the Social Security Administration and FEMA to decide when you see a doctor, what kind of treatment you receive, and when you will receive it, then go for it. You deserve what you get.”

Hey Mike, fuck off, you ignorant shit.

I live in a country with socialized medicine and I’m the only one who decides when I see a doctor. And guess you chooses what medical treatment I get? Me and my doctor.

So unless you want to stop lying, you should shut the fuck up.
