Forum

Would any of you be interested in shooting the breeze in a forum spinoff of OW.com? I’ve always wanted to run one, but not an empty one, heh.

Both comments and pings are currently closed.

This forum would differ from comments threads how?

  2. White Whale says:

    Oliver,
How would the forum be set up? Topics?

On a side note, I am going to be vacationing in Hawaii with my immediate family and I am going to see Pearl Harbor. Any fees to see the area? Anything I should look for in particular?
    Thanks
    White Whale

Forums are better for facilitating discussion, everyone has equal space, same font size.

Blogs are better for broadcasting opinion, while comments are in the 8 point font underneath the ads.

Plus, if you get a forum like phpbb.com or something, more people would be instantly familiar with BBCode and such, so easier to post links.

Personally, I run a forum, not a blog.

  4. Dr. Victor Davis Handjob says:

I like blog comments. I don’t mind the small fonts at all. I might participate in a forum, but I don’t quite see the appeal for now.

  5. ferris says:

    I’ll participate. Because I’m a smartass.

    And I tipe goood.

  6. Brad DeLong says:

    Yes…

  7. mike in dc says:

    Could work.

  8. Depends. Will Kim Kardashian be showing up? Cause once you’ve had a balding tax attorney with two kids in diapers, you never go back.

  9. jerry says:

Sorry no. Too many blogs and way too much work on my plate, and I just don’t see how forums offer a whole lot that is different from the blog itself.

However, I would definitely go to the local drinking liberally whenever you and some other bloggers were to show up….

I know it’s not the same at all, but it could be fun to have a progressive bloggers tour the states along with drinking liberally chapters.

Ya gotta get some of that Soros money to send you and Duncan Black and Eric Alterman and any other MM bloggers out every week to visit a different Drinking Liberally outpost.

  10. Dexter says:

A forum would be fun. They definitely lend themselves to longer conversations, as threads with new comments stay at the top, instead of slowly sinking of the first page.

I read your site from time to time and I’ve been looking for a good political forum to go to. Right now the one I’m at is too partisan, and people focus more on personal attacks than actual issues. I also like the boards at Unity08 for their variety of ideas, though a lot of them are crazy ideas…
bottom line is, if the discussion is good, non bias, and professional count me in

  12. Ellie says:

I’d like to see a cultural offshoot that draws more of a line between news and commentary and the slower news times when cat/music blogging take over.

It’s obviously software and mutual-interest dependent, but maybe a bloggy version of Drinking Liberally where cultural discussions don’t jar with the insane events of the day.

I can see this as being hard to maintain blog by blog, but a few blogs clumped together as regular groups or shifting around would be a good start. It would expose people to new blogs and open blogs up to more readers (again, software permitting.)

Apart from cultural issues, this kind of grouping could have live debates between bloggers, discussions about songs, movies and books, contests between blog readers — who’s kung fu is the best — and so on.

In the content area, I like what Pandagon’s done with its music blog.

The blog panel format can also be used to grill, toast or test political and other figures.

If you build it, they will come. Maybe. With so few posters now, it might be ripe for an aggressive wipe-out by the rabid freeper morans. Just sayin’.

Still looking for links? Check out the Atrios story on Vitter and the Diapers. Yes, Diaper Fetish. You all know what a diaper fetish is, right? Right? I didn’t. Very illuminating…skin crawl. Vitter is toast, if this is true.
