David Vitter, The Latest Republican Hypocrite

9:34 am EST July 10th, 2007 | Republicans | 23 Comments

One day this sort of disclosure will be shocking, but not for a while.

Louisiana Sen. David Vitter apologized Monday for his telephone number showing up on the old phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates, the alleged prostitution ring run in the nation’s capital by Deborah Jeane Palfrey.

"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Vitter said in a statement.

I’m not aware of his record. Your post doesn’t exactly explain why he’s a hypocrite.

  2. mdhawk says:

Gee DrPidgro, maybe its because he makes statements like this about the sanctimony of marriage:

“I don’t believe there’s any issue that’s more important than this one,” said Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican. “I think this debate is very healthy, and it’s winning a lot of hearts and minds. I think we’re going to show real progress.”

Claims that denying certain people the right to marry is somehow destroying families and the institution of marriage, backs those claims up with votes, and then goes and fucks hookers probably because his wife “doesn’t do those things he likes” (the quotes are my own narrative).

Then has the audacity to say that something like this is between him, his wife and God (serious, between him and God?), while not batting an eyelash when the private lives of other people become available for public debate.

Wanna know what’s really shocking about this story? It’s about a Republican who actually accepts responsibility, even if it’s in a weak-ass CYA sort of way….

  4. Iggy says:

Here’s my favorite thing about it is Mrs. Vitter’s comment back in 2000:

‘Asked by an interviewer in 2000 whether she could forgive her husband if she learned he’d had an extramarital affair, as Hillary Clinton and Bob Livingston’s wife had done, Wendy Vitter told the Times-Picayune: “I’m a lot more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hillary. If he does something like that, I’m walking away with one thing, and it’s not alimony, trust me.”‘

But he went on to say that he asked for god’s forgiveness and god granted it to him. Where do they manage to get these nut cases with the voices inside their heads, and who the hell elects them?

  6. Dr. Hakker says:

Right on, buma. I just wish we had reporters thorough enough to ask follow up questions, like “How did you know God forgave you?” I might actually pay money to hear the response to that one…

  7. Mike says:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive.”

Amazing what you’ll learn when you pick up a Bible and actually read what’s in it.

If Vitter was a Democrat, this would be a career boost. He’d probably have Bill Clinton out campaigning for him. And the “ACTION ALERT”s from the MoveOn.org gang, promising full support for the Senator and relentless persecution of those who published the story, would already be piling up in the email boxes of the party faithful.

  8. Mike says:

mdhawk, Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, then got hummers from a coed intern.

Doesn’t seem like he was too concerned about really defending his marriage, does it?

Do I detect the scent of hypocrisy in the former Clinton White House as well?

  9. Acanthus says:

“Do I detect the scent of hypocrisy in the former Clinton White House as well?”

    Yes.

  10. merlallen says:

    But, Clinton!!!1!! lame ass motherfuckers.
Every Family Values Republican’t turns out to be a john, gay or a pedophile.
    Sometimes all 3.

  11. SaveFarris says:

Politicians’s sex lives are fair game now? Cool…

I know asking for logical consistency from the Reality-Based community is a fool’s errand. And griping about a blog not covering a topic is imminently lame. … However … it’s tough not to notice how Oliver has focused his attention on this and not how the mayor of Los Angeles is literaly in bed with the media. Oh wait, he’s a Democrat? Never mind…

  12. SpiderJ says:

Clinton was wrong. Can we move on now?

Has Villaraigosa spent his career telling Americans how X and Y undermine marriage? If not, there’s no comparison here.

  13. Dugger says:

    Spider

“Has Villaraigosa spent his career telling Americans how X and Y undermine marriage? ”

Show us where Vitter did this. Or did you just assume?

  14. Dr. Hakker says:

    From Vitter’s web-site:

Vitter Statement on Protecting the Sanctity of Marriage–

“This is a real outrage. The Hollywood left is redefining the most basic institution in human history, and our two U.S. Senators won’t do anything about it.

We need a U.S. Senator who will stand up for Louisiana values, not Massachusetts’s values. I am the only Senate Candidate to coauthor the Federal Marriage Amendment; the only one fighting for its passage. I am the only candidate proposing changes to the senate rules to stop liberal obstructionists from preventing an up or down vote on issues like this, judges, energy, and on and on.” stated David Vitter.

  15. SpiderJ says:

No, I didn’t. And Hakker responded before me as to why.

  16. “Politicians’s sex lives are fair game now?”

No, but hypocrisy always is. Then again, you knew that and are just acting stupid because it is political prudent.

“Show us where Vitter did this. Or did you just assume?”

He said Clinton should resign because he wasn’t morally fit for leadership. Is that close enough for you?

  17. Dugger says:

    hacker and Spider

    Damn. You are right.

  18. Luther English says:

Does anyone else realize that soliciting a prostitute is illegal?

If he is completely responsible for these acts, then he should turn himself into the proper authorities, right?

  19. SpiderJ says:

He doesn’t have to, Luther. God forgives him, remember, and God is a higher authority. I’m sure Vitter can just show the cops a note from God excusing him for his earthly crimes.

  20. “Does anyone else realize that soliciting a prostitute is illegal?”

That little detail seems to get ignored whenever this story is brought up.

  21. Mike says:

The co-chairman of McCain’s Florida campaign,Bob Allen, R-Fl was arrested in a Titusville park restroom on charges of solicitation after he approached a plain clothes police officer and offered to perform oral sex on the officer for $20….
Oops. It must be the water.

  22. Dr. Hakker says:

Well, let’s keep in mind that Vitter has not confessed to soliciting a prostitute, only to “committing a great sin.” Whatever that means.

My real problem with people like Vitter is the implied suggestion that you can’t be a moral person if you aren’t a member of the church of jesustology and that if you are a member, that somehow makes you a moral person. If we could just get past those two incredible fallacies, I think I’d be a little more forgiving.

My other question is why Oliver hasn’t picked up the story about our former surgeon general who has made yet another claim of beig muzzled by this administration. Surely it’s a more important (if not more sensational) story than most of what’s been reported in the news this week…

  23. As stated above, if the Republican party didn’t continually set themselves up as the appointed moral scold of a nation people like myself wouldn’t make so much noise about the rank hypocrisy of their repeated involvement in these sex scandals.
