Independents Going Democratic

One of the warning signs in 2003-4 was independent support for Bush’s re-election, the much hoped-for last minute swing of independents for the challenger never materialized and helped keep Bush in office. But already, independents have a bad taste in their mouth and are moving solidly Democratic.

  1. This should be a bigger story. In fact, this should be one of the biggest stories of this election cycle. CNN, MSNBC, and FOX should all be reporting that independents are more aligned with Democrats that Republicans on almost every issue out there.

If the Democrats win the White House, (as well as make gains in the Senate and the House of Representatives), this will be the leading cause.

And then you’ve got guys like me who self-identify as Independent but are solidly liberal and would never vote Republican. (Well…okay, I voted McCain in ’04. In my defense, that was back when he was best known as the guy who was saying how great it would be if we didn’t torture people. And he got something like 80% of the vote, so I didn’t exactly swing the election in his favor.) I know we’re a minority, but I think we’re growing.

Hell, I’m a registered Democrat, but that was just so I could throw my vote away on Kucinich in the ’04 primary. (Kerry was a shoo-in by that point anyway, so my primary vote was useless. Just like pretty much every vote I’ve ever cast for any office higher than the House.)

I guess this goes to show that you can’t fool all of the people all of the time. Maybe conservatives should just stick with talk radio and stay out of politics, where they’re ultimately unwanted.
