Weird.

Innis was a campaign chair for Alan Keyes though, so I clearly trust his judgement.

Colorado: Bob Schaffer (Senate Candidate) Gets Called Out

So, campaigning 101: Don’t talk about how your Colorado’s hometown boy and then use mountains from Alaska in your ad.

More:

Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer unofficially launched his campaign Wednesday with a biographical spot he was forced to pull almost immediately because the image in the ad of Pikes Peak — where he proposed to his wife — turned out instead to be Mount McKinley in, well, Alaska.

Dick Wadhams, Schaffer’s campaign manager, said the spot would be re-edited with Colorado peaks and start running again almost immediately, but not before his candidate took a series of hits from liberal bloggers noting that the ad was supposed to underscore Schaffer’s deep connection to Colorado.

You may remember Dick Wadhams from his time managing now ex-Senator George Macaca Allen’s campaign.

California Overturns Gay Marriage Ban

In the future, we’re going to think this entire “controversy” was as stupid as anti-miscegenation laws.

In a monumental victory for the gay rights movement, the California Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage Thursday in a ruling that would allow same-sex couples in the nation’s biggest state to tie the knot.

Domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage, the justices ruled 4-3 in striking down the ban.

Outside the courthouse, gay marriage supporters cried and cheered as the news spread.

Clearly, this totally affects us straight people. How ever will I go to Vegas for a quickie marriage now that the gays have ruined it?

Hillary Clinton FTW

Democrats united is what I prefer.

President Bush’s comparison of any Democrat to Nazi appeasers is both offensive and outrageous on the face of it, especially in light of his failures in foreign policy. This is the kind of statement that has no place in any presidential address and certainly to use an important moment like the 60th anniversary celebration of Israel to make a political point seems terribly misplaced. Unfortunately, this is what we’ve come to expect from President Bush.

“There is a very clear difference between Democrats and Republicans on foreign policy and that difference will be evident once we take back the White House.

Projection: Bush Family Profited From Nazis

This article is popping up again after Bush’s attack in foreign territory.

prescott bush

George Bush’s grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company’s assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator’s action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

In order to facilitate with ballot-access, Keyes is trying to start a new party called “America’s Independent Party”. He has groupings of supporters in Texas, California, Florida, New York and Missouri. In what was their first major ballot-access hurdle, the Keyes campaign has failed to get on the ballot in Texas—collecting only 10,000 signatures. This is actually an impressive effort considering they had no time, no money, and no real support for such an effort, but nowhere near the 74,000 needed.

7 Months To Go, Sweet Jesus

George Bush again attacks Democrats as terrorist appeasers, on foreign soil no less, when as we all know - George W. Bush has had more Americans die via terrorism under him than any other president in American history.

In a speech to Israel’s Knesset, Bush said: “Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along.

“We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”

Obama responded with a statement, seizing on Bush’s remarks even as it was unclear to whom the president was referring.

“It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel’s independence to launch a false political attack,” Obama said in the statement his aides distributed. “George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the president’s extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel.”

The Contrarian Black

Considering the lack of minority - especially black - voices and faces in elite political discourse, I am always amused at the amount of contrarian opinions that get pushed into the print and broadcast press. You don’t get to hear much from people who hold widely held positions in the black community unless they’re retreads like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, but if you have some wacky idea (ie “Slavery Wasn’t So Bad”, “Jim Crow Was Moral”, “Clarence Thomas Is A Legal Supermind And Not A Sleazy Pervert”) you get upgraded to first class service. Long time readers know that I hold some opinions that are outliers within black America but I guess I’m not out of orbit by enough degrees.

Today’s example is Cinque Henderson writing in The New Republic about Obama skepticism. Now, not only is this an opinion of rapidly increasing minority, he doesn’t make a good case. The entire article is “I don’t trust Obama” and that’s about it. But I’m pretty sure the TNR editors saw black writer and contrarian opinion and hit the button to forward the e-mail to their copyeditors. The only information I could find on this Cinque Henderson is that he was a staff writer on Studio 60, which has the distinction for me of being the only Aaron Sorkin TV show that sucked.

Hey, I’m a black person who watches Aaron Sorkin shows. That’s pretty fracking contrarian. Can I now be a CNN pundit?

Arlen Specter: Extensive Spying By Cheating Patriots*

The cheating characterization is mine. I confess that I think congress has no reason to be involved in this and its pretty stupid for them to be in the middle of it. But they are and so we have this:

After meeting with a former New England Patriots employee who helped the team spy on opponents, Senator Arlen Specter on Wednesday described the team’s illicit videotaping tactics as more systematic and deliberate than what the N.F.L. has acknowledged publicly.

Mr. Specter, a Republican from Pennsylvania, said the former employee, Matt Walsh, described elaborate measures by the Patriots to conceal their filming of opponents’ signals. Mr. Walsh also explained how the Patriots’ coaching staff gleaned strategic information from members of the team’s video crew who had watched the St. Louis Rams’ walk-through practice before the 2002 Super Bowl.

He also identified more games and opponents that were filmed by the Patriots and detailed the advantages the team gained in later games.

The last time I posted on this The Poor Man got all up in my grill reminding me of the Patriots* killing the Redskins 52-7. Which is true. But all 7 of those pathetic points came without cheating.

Carly Fiorina And John McCain

When I first saw that John McCain was pushing failed CEO Carly Fiorina as his frontperson on business/economic issues I figured it was a little carly fiorinaweird. There are a lot of successful business/CEO types who are happy little soldiers for the GOP, I can’t for the life of me figure what the upside of picking Fiorina is.

She was brought on board to grow HP, but instead laid off people then pushed the company into a merger with Compaq that turned into a mess and was opposed by Walter Hewlett, son of HP co-founder and tech pioneer Bill Hewlett. A little after that she was effectively fired by the board of directors.

And yet, this is the leading voice on the Republican side for business and economics. She must have some freaky pictures of someone or something, because even the McCain people can’t be this stupid.

Here is a chart of HP’s stock performance during Fiorina’s tenure (July 19, 1999 - February, 10, 2005):

And here is HP’s chart post-Fiorina (July 19, 1999 February, 10, 2005 - present):

I’ve seriously pooh-poohed the idea that Obama would pick Edwards as his running mate. I still think its unlikely. But man, this looks like a ticket.

I, and other people, think that Obama needs an older possibly gubernatorial person to balance his negatives but he may go the Clinton route and pick a candidate that echoes himself. If anything, the optics of two young looking candidates versus McCain would be amplified.

McCain Family Money Helped Fuel Sudan’s Genocide Government In Darfur

No wonder they’re hiding Cindy McCain’s money that fuels John McCain’s campaigns.

Cindy McCain, whose husband has been a critic of the violence in Sudan, sold off more than $2 million in mutual funds whose holdings include companies that do business in the African nation.

The sale on Wednesday came after The Associated Press questioned the investments in light of calls by John McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee, for international financial sanctions against the Sudanese leadership.

Last year, at least four presidential candidates divested themselves of Sudan-related holdings.

According to McCain’s personal financial disclosure, Cindy McCain’s investments include two mutual funds — American Funds Europacific Growth fund and American Funds Capital World Growth and Income fund — that are listed by the Sudan Divestment Task Force as targets for divestment.
