Don’t nominate racist idiots like George Allen. It isn’t the magical internet that took down Allen. It was his own dumb mouth that did the duty, the camera just preserved the moment.
I love the opening line – “We lost the Senate in 2006 because of the Internet, so to ignore it this cycle would be political malpractice.”
Ummm, no, you lost the Senate in 2006 because you are nominating a bunch of out of touch racists who have done the President’s bidding for 6 years without a single shred of accountability.
The internet just recorded it, and played it over and over again.
“We lost the Senate in 2006 because of that guy over there. He sucks. Nothing to do with me. It’s all his fault. Let’s get him.”
Regarding, “Don’t nominate racist idiots like George Allen”, when your platform slogan is “We like our guns loaded, our women white, and our gays dead”, it’s hard to nominate anyone else.
That’s not their slogan. They’re not that dumb.
I mean, it is a pervading ideology in the party, but they don’t say it out loud like that.

The worst part is that Allen barely, barely lost to a former Marine, longtime Republican who served for Dutch Reagan. After Allen very clearly called someone a thinly coded synonym for the N-word.
Actually, the worst part is how the media lost sight of this. They virtually never acknowledged what was going on in that video, that Allen was cheerfully slurring an Other with woefully hidden racism. It was all “macaca, tee hee hee.” Yeah, it’s a funny word (all those “K” sounds), but its meaning is truly despicable.
When I’m depressed, I like to think about what George Allen must be thinking at any given moment. He really was one of the frontrunners for the Republican nomination. And now his only public moments are at Falwell’s funeral. What a wonderful feeling to know how far that asshole has fallen. I like to think that he spends his days puttering around his house, unshaven in his dirty bathrobe, spinning the chamber to a pistol and muttering to himself.
Memorandum to all Repub Party members:
Do not reveal your true selves at any time. Always use the carefully crafted phony veneer created for you by Frank Luntz’ focus groups.
Libruls have video cameras now and they might catch you acting like an @sshole, then post your true self on the Internet for all to see.
We all know Americans will not vote for us Repubs if they see us for how we really are, as evidenced in the 2006 elections.

. . . then pretended that this particular interpretation was all news to him. If you knew nothing else about Allen, couldn’t you have guessed he was Republican, just from the cowardice and mendacity of this response?
At this point, what’s objectionable about the GOP isn’t so much the bits and bobs of what they claim is their platform–whether you disagree about taxation policy or gun rights or whatever.
It’s that, although they’ve striven to be–with great success–in charge of absolutely everything, absolutely no one in a position of leadership in the Republican Party has the slightest, meagerest clue of what it means to be responsible, even for something as basic as their own words.
(And of course, forget their taking responsibility for the big things–Iraq isn’t their fault, losing New Orleans isn’t their fault, massive foreign debt isn’t their fault–they’re just victims of some college student with a video camera, Bill Clinton, or just massive, unforeseeable bad luck. It’s never, ever about them, except as victims)
