The Con “Rosebud”

You get the feeling that con warmongers like Bill Kristol, Doug Feith, Dick Cheney and of course President Bush will be whispering final words on their deathbeds, Charles Foster Kane style about “The schools… the schools… tell them about the Iraqi… schools…..”

G.P.O.A.T.

FDR

For me, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the Greatest President Of All Time (G.P.O.A.T.). Last weekend I walked around the tidal basin to check out once again his fitting memorial in Washington. Really beautiful (and I’m biased because I live in the area and am a native of Maryland, but people, please come see your capital, it is a truly spectacular city and worthy of our nation). One of the things I like about FDR was his clear lack of timidity. Right when America needed a leader to pull it out of a spiral, that sort of attitude was just what the doctor ordered. Check out this justification of his for why the Pentagon should be five-sided:

“You know, gentlemen, I like that pentagon-shaped building,” Roosevelt said. “You know why?”

“No,” the commissioners replied resignedly.

“I like it because nothing like it has ever been done that way before.”

You can almost see him clenching his cigarette between his considerable chompers and giving a jaunty laugh after that exchange.

From all of I’ve read and watched of FDR, that’s how he tackled the big trials of his time. The Depression? We will defeat it. The Nazis and the Japanese Empire? We will win.

And we did.

Giving The Warmongers A Piece Of Mind

Former Bush chief of staff Andrew Card, booed by hundreds at college commencement.

These people and their henchmen and apologists deserve nothing but shame for the rest of their lives.

The Base Presidency

I may be a partisan Democrat who feels like the Republican party is full of crap and built on a foundation of hate and lies, but I hope George W. Bush is the last "base" president.

It’s not healthy for our democracy. The president must be an advocate for his or her ideals, but being party leader should take a major backseat to being national leader.

Hail To The “Obscure Content Error”

1:16 pm EST May 26th, 2007 | Uncategorized | 1 Comment

I thank Microsoft for this new addition to the cultural lexicon for nudity.

Halo 2 for Windows Vista is now expected to hit the stores
sometime in the first week of June, approximately two weeks behind the
revised May 22 schedule. The game was originally scheduled for release
on May 8, but was delayed due to some technical problems, Microsoft
said at the time.

The software giant attributes the most recent delay to an "obscure content error" found in the initial production of Halo 2′s map editor. That error was partial nudity.

Despite the error, Microsoft said it would be difficult to stumble across the offending content.

Franks-Willis 2007 Iraqapalooza

12:23 pm EST May 26th, 2007 | News | 10 Comments

Dale Franks has a roundup of links talking about the back and forth he and I had. Yeah, the whole thing kind of burned me out too.

But.

Just one thing I want to address because it seems to have stuck in the craw of a few. Theres this idea that when I say I want to go into Pakistan or wherever Al Qaeda might be, that it’s got to be crazy because I’m against the occupation of Iraq. Sigh. As I told many before the Iraq war: I’m not averse to using military power to removing threats, I’m just against being an occupying force. I would have been perfectly fine if we had gone into Iraq to eliminate the WMD threat we thought was there at the time, and then be out. It’s no good occupying a country if the people don’t want you there, but if a threat to us or our allies is there – I don’t see the error in eliminating it. I think it’s crazy that we let Al Qaeda essentially operate in Pakistan with a free hand, and I think it will take military force to root them out. That doesn’t mean I think we ought to invade and occupy Pakistan (or any other country where Al Qaeda is for that matter).

On September 11th, Al Qaeda declared war on us. I think we would be fools to let them get away with it because of a border (and again, when did conservatives find this newfound respect for international borders as far as military action goes?).
