Why I’m (Still) Glad Jerry Falwell Is Dead

saddam and satan

Max Blumenthal has the details. I got some flack in e-mail and even from my mom (she’s one of those Christians who actually practices what the Bible really teaches) when I posted that I was glad Falwell was dead, but I refuse to back away from that sentiment. Much like how I felt when Strom Thurmond went to hell, these are people who actively worked to keep blacks, gays, and others as less than human. If the Falwells had had their way I or my predecessors would be hanging from a noose somewhere.

Why the heck would I want someone like that walking on our beautiful planet?

Falwell, like George Wallace and countless others, has repeatedly apologized for his segregationist activism during the 1950′s and 1960′s. Curiously Max Blumenthal had no problem leaving that little detail out of his report.

Blumenthal also neglected to mention that Dr. King was the subject of an extended FBI investigation (requested by J. Edgar Hoover and authorized by Bobby Kennedy) into possible ties to communism. Falwell and his associates weren’t the only ones who feared that Dr. King’s equality philosophies were derived from “From each according to his means, to each according to his needs.”

I’m no follower of Falwell, but omitting critical details and context in order to fabricate a hit piece falls short of anything resembling journalism.

Hoover wanted any excuse to shut him up. He didn’t like rabble-rousers on his patch. They investigated everyone for ties to Communism whether they had any or not.

  3. Misplaced Patriot says:

Yes, Falwell apologized for his segregationist views, then continued to ban interracial dating on his college campus.

[ I believe Liberty U. did eventually change this policy, but not until the 90s ]

Our world is indeed better off without the likes of Falwell. If his followers were not such hypocrites, they would be glad he has gone off to be with his maker, instead of sad that he has left this imperfect world. Of course, if heaven is peopled with Falwells, I don’t wanna go. No reason to back down, Oliver.

See picture above. Move over Saddam.

  6. Jay says:

So if Falwell was a Democrat, than his apologies for his past segregationist views would have been sufficient apparently.

I’m starting to think that if Charles Manson endorsed Barack Obama for President, you’d be writing letters to the parole board seeking his release.

  7. SpiderJ says:

Jay, did you miss the part where Falwell continued to ban interracial dating on his university after his “apologies”?

    Actions speak louder.

  8. Jay says:

Spider, I saw a comment from somebody, but unless somebody shows me otherwise, I think that person has Liberty confused with Bob Jones U.

I wouldn’t have minded if the jackass had stuck around for another few months until South Park started airing new episodes. No doubt they would have some fun with this.

Ah well, still a good week.

  10. Duros62 says:

Somehow, it is gratifying to know that he died alone, in his office. As if Jesus just came to him and said, “That’s it, Jerry. Lights out.”

As if Jesus just came to him and said, “That’s it, Jerry. Lights out.”

What makes you think it was Jesus?

  12. Here’s the rub though: He apologizes for segregationist remarks while continuing to demean people of different faiths, sexualities and political parties than him. If he’s clearly in favor of dividing people into increasingly smaller groups in order to better attack them, why exactly do you suppose he apologized for the segregationist statements? Could it be that he was only sorry that hating blacks turned out to be less profitable for him in the long run than hating Pagans, Homosexuals, Feminists, the ACLU, and all those other groups that made 9/11 happen.

Yes, yes I know he “apologized” for making those statements too, except just a week before his death, when asked about the statement on CNN, he said he “stands right by it.” Just to put some perspective around what an “apology” from this waste of humanity really means. May his kind never be seen upon the face of the Earth ever again.

  13. Rheinhard says:

I caught the wonderful clip of Christopher Hitchens sending Sean Hannity into apoplexy with his honest and direct commentary on Falwell. In Hannity’s list of reasons why Falwell was a really great guy he included the founding of “Liberty University.” I would have liked to hear Hitchens reply with Richard Dawkins view that Liberty U. is nothing to be proud of, when it teaches that dinosaurs and cavemen existed at the same time. It’s not a university, it’s a factory for the mass manufacture of ignorance and bullshit.

  14. tomboyms says:

I wouldn’t say I’m glad he’s dead, but I’m not exactly broken up about it.

  15. Duros62 says:

    This is brilliant.

  16. Mike says:

    … if Falwell was a Democrat, than….Jay

Not to worry, racist christo-fascist thugs like Falwell would never be a Democrat. Here’s another take on Jerry Falwell’s record
The man was dirt and no better than Pat Robertson, Jim Bakker or Jimmy Swaggart.

  17. Anonymous says:

Oliver, it has nothing to do with you being black. It has to do with you being a sack of shit.

  18. freder421 says:

Face the facts people, the world just got a little better with the death of Jerry Falwell. He lived until the age of 73, none of us know when we will leave this earth. I see that Fred Phelps is going to picket Jerry’s funeral. So people sit back and enjoy the show.

“Oliver, it has nothing to do with you being black. It has to do with you being a sack of shit.”

Well done on not using your name, you fucking cunt.

N G: Why don’t you just blame Frank?

  21. Steve Gilliard says:

I think it’s disrespectful to talk about the dead like that.
