The Number Game

What provokes this weird numbering scheme? It isn’t left or right. Just kind of odd, the compulsion to make the number into a name:
And I’m sure there’s a bunch more, those are just the two most recent. It almost reminds me of the three named assassins meme (John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, Mark David Chapman, etc.).

It’s similar to naming every scandal as “blah-blah-gate”. It may have started with the coverage of the “Chicago Seven” trial during the Vietnam era.
Reporters are just too lazy to think up new names, so they re-cycle the old ones.
Where I come from it usually means they’re innocent. The Birmingham Six, the Guildford Four, the Maguire Seven.

Sorry, old gag.
If we’re going by historical precedent, I’ll claim the current record for oldest reference with the “Hollywood Ten,” the ten screenwriters who were blacklisted due to the House Committee on Un-American Activities. That beats the Chicago Seven (or Eight, as they were first called) by over a decade.
And Sal… you got me to laugh out loud, VERY loud, at that joke. It might be old, but it was new to me..

as for the three named assassins meme, it’s ‘cus when reporting a name for a crime like that, there could be more than one John Booth, Lee Oswald, or Mark Chapman in that town, and it’s there for clarification
