Those are my exact thoughts about Lost. I loved the first two seasons but the last season has been mediocre at best. The fact that the characters never ask one freaking question makes it impossible to relate with anyone on the show. I hope the next season is the last, becasue I too want to see how it ends and don’t want to suffer through any more seasons like this one.

The early episodes conveyed a sense of a community among the Losties. Lately it’s been nothing but leads and extras. Soap opera has come to the foreground and mythology has receded. If I want soaps, there are better places to find them.
Heroes plays as though Kring has it all figured out and has the skill unveil his universe bit by bit as a master storyteller. Lost is, well, lost and feels like they’re making it up as they go.
I never got much into the X-files for much the same reason. Scully and Mulder would come across something unexplainable, then come up with the most bat-shit crazy insane hypothesis and spend the rest of the hour turning out to be right the first time.
Problem with Lost is they don’t even try for the bat-shit crazy insane hypothesis.
But I don’t think the characters on Lost ever asked any questions. From the first show they seemed to behave unnaturally. I’m not convinced that this season is all that different, just that it’s outlived the audience’s ‘willing suspension of disbelief’.
In fact, I’ve thought the strange way they act is the best case for the theory that they are ghosts in some kind of purgatory.
I agree to the extent that LOST has had more questions then answers, but then it’s unique in that aspect. No other show (since X-Files) has been so shrouded in mystery.
