Obama Under Threat, Under Secret Service Protection

Damn this.

CNN: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been placed under the protection of the U.S. Secret Service, reportedly because of a threat against him, the Secret Service said Thursday.

MORE:

A statement from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he authorized the protection detail for Obama.

“As a matter of procedure, we will not release any details of the deliberations or assessments that led to protection being initiated,” the statement said. “For security reasons we will not release the timing, scope or details of any protective operations.”

ABC:

It is the earliest time in an election cycle that the Secret Service has ever placed a presidential candidate under its protection, the Secret Service said.

The United States Secret Service confirmed that a security detail had been put in place Thursday. U.S. Secret Service spokesman Darrin Blackford said on the record, “Yes, we can confirm we are protecting Senator Obama.”

The conspiracy theories are flying fast and furious on premiere conservative news site Free Republic: They blame Hillary, a desperate Obama campaign, and Obama himself. The thing is, I wouldn’t be surprised if the person who made the threat – and it would have to be a pretty credible one for the secret service to be involved – is a freeper or one of their allies.

I say we compromise: whoever did this should be waterboarded and shipped off to Gitmo. Who’s with me?

  2. Plantsman1 says:

    Not me.

  3. SpiderJ says:

Wow. I get that you’re trying to be funny, but what’s the compromise here? You agree that it’s a bad thing that somebody has threatened the life of a Senator, and we agree to allow torture and imprisonment based on shady charges?

  4. Quaker in a Basement says:

Well, so much for the “racism is dead” notion.

  5. Duros62 says:

    dammit, dammit, dammit to hell.
    WTfuckedy F?

  6. Ron says:

I’m actually surprised to learn BA wasn’t already under SS protection.

  7. Duros62 says:

Farris, clearly you don’t get how civilization works, do you?

  8. Media Glutton says:

I’m actually pleased that he’s getting Secret Service. When I was at his Oakland rally, I was pretty fixated on why the hell they would have him speaking in the middle of like five 10-story dark-windowed buildings. I’m glad somebody’s out there looking out for him.

  9. Duros62 says:

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but i sure as well would think twice about putting “Lurch” Chertoff in charge of my protection, though.

  10. pedromd07 says:

holy crap! A front runner presidential candidate getting death threats and secret service protection! Has this happened before? Gotta be racism!

(Where was that article on dump truck with dirt crashes, dirt spilled again…..?)

  11. fd10801 says:

    I blame the Left!

    Because they’re blaming the Right!

Now the Chris Rock routine rings in my ears: “Make me {Chris} the vice – President!

Then NOBODY will shoot the President!

Anybody for an Obama – Clinton ticket now?

  12. StarkyLuv says:

There is a LARGE portion of White America who will not only NOT vote for Obama because he is black, but that are actually offended that a black man is running and may actually win the Presidency.

And there are people out there who will take violent action against Obama. I’ve been talking about the right-wing taking violent action when it is obvious that their hate-mongering theocracy coup attempt will fail. I stand by that prediction.

  13. Duros62 says:

    Has this happened before?

    Never this early. Ever.

  14. fd10801 says:

StarkyLuv: I see your prediction, and raise your prediction with a prediction that this didn’t come from the right, and may have come from Islamofascists or Black muslims like the people who killed Malcolm X.

  15. Hedley says:

Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren would not provide details of what led to the extra security, but said, “I’m not aware it was based on any threat.” Department of Homeland Security officials said there were no known threats.

  16. Marty says:

I’d guess you’d have to define “LARGE portion.” IT also seems to me that there is a “LARGE portion” of America that will vote for him BECAUSE he is black man (including many white guilters.) If he were white and his name were, say, Jeff Anderson- he’s be last years John Edwards instead of a front runner.

And what “hate mongering theocracy coup” exactly do you speak of?

  17. fd10801 says:

I wonder if Sen. Obama will choose Stagger Lee for his Secret Service name?

  18. pedromd07 says:

yea cause Reagan was shot by a freeper! It only happens to liberals….f’ing freepers…!

    LOL

  19. pedromd07 says:

why don’t you guys go breathe into a paper bag for a while and let the grownups run things while you get it together….

  20. Duros62 says:

Does a day go by when someone doesn’t tell you to STFU, Pedro?

If no one has yet today, then STFU.

  21. Quaker in a Basement says:

Peed’, you never got back to me about that bet on Batiste.

    Change your mind?

  22. Rex Mundane says:

…”I’m not aware it was based on any threat.” Department of Homeland Security officials said there were no known threats.

Well yeah but thats the sort of thing that, in this situation, they’d say if there actually were threats too isn’t it? I mean like its been said, this hasnt ever happened this early before, it must be caused by something, most likely a threat, but if a threat was made they certainly dont want to give the cretin the self-satisfaction of basically telling the world “yeah, there’s this one skeezix in Reno who described what he’d like to do with a pair of pliers and a 9-volt battery, so we’re beefing up the protection as a result of this guy’s threat.” Perhaps that didnt happen too, but just them saying publically that there’s no specific threat doesnt mean there actually isnt, just that they dont want to say there is.

  23. Nimrod Gently says:

Pedro, what’s wrong with your brain? We’re talking about this particular instance of a prominent politician being threatened, not all of them ever.

” a prediction that this didn’t come from the right, and may have come from Islamofascists or Black muslims like the people who killed Malcolm X.”

    They’re left-wing, are they?

  24. Hedley says:

While there certainly could be a credible threat, the fact that this has never happened so early before, isn’t really relevant. Everything is earlier now particularly as both parties’ eventual candidates will have the nomination in hand in February — in all likelihood. Also, be aware that the senator formerly known as Hillary Rodham Clinton has Secret Service protection, albeit as a former first lady, and thus given Obama’s standing as an equal to Clinton, it may have been felt that he is now deserving of protection as well.

  25. Hedley says:

    The latest from CNN:

(CNN) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois, has been placed under the protection of the Secret Service, the agency said Thursday.

The government is not aware of any specific, credible threat against Obama, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the decision. But the campaign has received hate mail, calls and other “threatening materials” in the past and during his campaign, the source said.

Three Obama campaign officials who discussed the issue on condition of anonymity said there was no specific threat against the candidate.

They said the request stemmed from what one called the “cumulative effect” of a heavier campaign schedule, larger crowds and “just the growing perception internally” that it was time to take additional security precautions that are best suited for the Secret Service.

A Department of Homeland Security representative also told CNN there is no known specific or credible threat.

  26. william says:

A spokesman for the Secret Service, Eric Zahren, said THE ANGENCY WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY SPECIFIC THREAT against Mr. Obama.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the person who made the non-specific threat – and it would have to be a pretty credible one for the secret service to be involved – is a Media Matters/Move On goon or one of their allies.

  27. fd10801 says:

    I’m getting a headache:

    Is the threat:

    Real?

    Not real?

    Real, but they’re not saying?

Not real, but they’re not saying?

    Possible?

    Probable?

    Likely?

    Unlikely?

    Better safe than sorry?

Err on the side of caution?

We have absolutely no idea, but we’re not taking any chances?

Pick as many as are applicable.

  28. Carol says:

Sorry, righties. The Black Muslims and MoveOn want any Democrat to win. More likely this is a knuckledragger who’s upset at the possibility that a black man just might pull it off and become President.

What the Secret Service has said is the most non-revealing answer they could give. The reason is not to give who/whomever is making the threats any information whatsoever as to whether or not the Service is on to them. If that person doesn’t think that they are being targeted, it makes it possible to apprehend such a person without much incident or a long chase. Plus they are still investigating and don’t want to jeopardize a possible case by giving opinions on it.

  29. Benny says:

Obama’s campaign should pay for the SS protection since it is early. Moreover, Edwards already had death threats at his campaign HQ, had to clear out the place, and still ask for local protection, and has to pay for security if he needs it.

  30. pedromd07 says:

security requested by OBAMA campaign itself! No credible threat, SS didn’t initiate it……

go back to breathing into your sacks….it was the earliest SS detail in history because the campaign got all weak in the knees sooner than anyone else…I bet the terrorist are shaking in their boots at the prospect of an Obama presidency!

  31. Plantsman1 says:

Somebody threatened him, he was put under protection. Certainly a cause for concern, but also entirely expected.

  32. I do not understand how did they know about this and in a fast manner. I wish they can do same thing when it comes to all americans.

  33. nihilistic_disintegration says:

Pedro: “security requested by OBAMA campaign itself!

    Wrong again, Pedro!

    According to AP:

” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told reporters Thursday night that several weeks ago he received information – some of it with a racial bent – that made him concerned for Obama’s safety. The number of people Obama was attracting at campaign events also worried him, Durbin said.

“Durbin said he approached Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., six to eight weeks ago and that Reid and Republican leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., went to the Secret Service last week.

“‘I expressed concern because of my affection for Barack and his family. I’ve traveled with Obama. I’ve witnessed enormous crowds,’ Durbin said. ‘This is a relief.’”

So it was apparently Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell who requested the security, not the Obama campaign.

Damn, Pedro, exactly how many times can one person be wrong? The amazing part is you still just shout out your answers like you know what the hell you’re talking about. No wonder everyone believes you’re a real doctor.

  34. pedromd07 says:

yea great cover story…Dick Durbin just had to express his man-crush for Barack Hussein, an affection that required speaking to major leaders in the house and senate and a request for 24 hour security….

Why didn’t ol’e Dick just walk over and plant a big wet on on Obama to express his “affection”

Not even a good cover story…and of course not the same story as MSNBC, CNN etc…

  35. Wellstone says:

Pedo, the incoherent vitriol is just SPEWING out of you today.

I hereby declare you a toxic waste zone under statute, and am going to have to ask the EPA for help in containing the stuff you put out.

  36. Duros62 says:

Wellstone, you may have to go for Superfund money.

  37. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Peed’: Batiste? Wager?

    Or were you just flappin’?

  38. nihilistic_disintegration says:

Awesome comeback, Pedro. I show that you were wrong, again, and your response is Obama has an evil foreigner-sounding name and… and… Dick Durbin is gay!

And in case you care, this from CNN:

“Illinois’ senior senator, Democrat Dick Durbin, told reporters Thursday night that he relayed concerns about the size of the crowds Obama was drawing and other issues to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

“Reid decided to take the matter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff as an issue for a congressional advisory board, Durbin said.”

And MSNBC states “Officials said Obama had requested the protection.”

Officials. Unnamed officials. Not Homeland Security, not the Obama campaign. The lesson here, don’t trust NBC news.

  39. Nimrod Gently says:

“Barack Hussein” LAWL THAT NEVER EVER EVER GETS OLD WHAT A HILLARIOUS COINCIDENCE THAT HIS MIDDLE NAME HAPPENS TO BE A VERY COMMON ONE FROM ISLAMIC AND SIMILAR CULTURES LOLLERS YOU ARE TEH COMEDY GENIUS NOW go away and never ever come back.

  40. pedromd07 says:

yea whatever , even Ollie is posting news reports saying that hussein obama asked for protection…

Get that paper sack out and start breathing into to it….that lack of C02 is cutting off the blood supply to your already atrophic cerebrum

  41. Duros62 says:

OOOOOhhh- atrophic cerebrum. See guys? He must be a real doctor!

  42. Quaker in a Basement says:

that lack of C02 is cutting off the blood supply

What? You’re saying that CO2 increases the blood supply to the brain?

    Have you published this finding?

  43. nihilistic_disintegration says:

I think I read some of Pedro’s work in “Real Doctor,” the Journal of Upstairs Hollywood Medical College.

  44. pedromd07 says:

No quaker, but thousands of other physiologist have……

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerebral_blood_flow

This is why we hyperventilate patients when doing craniotomies, it is a way of decrease intracranial pressure..

Quaker, see my snarky comment above about none of you liberals ever taking science classes….

  45. Duros62 says:

What? You’re saying that CO2 increases the blood supply to the brain?

You know I was gonna say something about that, but realized he was talking about hyperventilation.

I forgot all my science classes, but I do watch “House”.

BTW, I totally called that guy with the penis fish on Grey’s Anatomy last week. The minute the guy said he couldn’t pee and had been to Brazilian rain forest.

  46. pedromd07 says:

yea duros, you are so smart!…I love it when people tell me they diagnosed themselves with Google….I mean, most of us doctors are idiots, that is why it takes us 12 years of higher education to figure out what people who have never had a science class in their lives learn in 15 minutes on the internet!

  47. Quaker in a Basement says:

Very well, Peed’. Glad to learn you ARE seeing my posts.

    Now.

About that wager on Gen. Batiste? Are you in or are you backing down?

  48. pedromd07 says:

Sorry hadn’t gone down that far…what’s the bet?

  49. Quaker in a Basement says:

who wants to take bets on how long it will be before Batiste announces that he will be running for some office as a democrat?

    I say one year…

    Posted by: pedromd07 | May 2, 2007 7:55:48 PM

    Stakes?

  50. Quaker in a Basement says:

P.S. – increased blood flow while you’re huffing CO2 – net gain or loss in overall brain function?

  51. pedromd07 says:

I’ll take it as a real bet, but I only if I can qualify it…
“Running for some democratic office or actively and openly supporting someone who does(beyond just donating bucks or something…)

PS There is no generic measurement for “brain function”, but generally speaking more blood flow=more oxygen and energy=better….as long as you maintain cerebral perfusion pressures within the normal range…..

  52. Quaker in a Basement says:

I’ll take it as a real bet, but I only if I can qualify it…
“Running for some democratic office or actively and openly supporting someone who does

Weaseling already? It’s only been two days since you made the challenge.

So if Gen. Batiste so much as says something nice about a Dem candidate, you win?

    Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  53. Quaker in a Basement says:

but generally speaking more blood flow=more oxygen and energy=better

And specifically speaking about an flow increase attributable to a higher concentration of CO2?

  54. pedromd07 says:

Not weasling…just don’t want to welsh….No, like I said, something more significant that putting a sign on his lawn or donating a couple of thousand bucks…something like actively campaigning for, being part of a campaign for, organizing a PAC…You’re an honorable man, you decide if it is significant…

Flow is flow….C02 is one of the regulatory mechanisms of cerebral blood flow, whether that flow is increased due to hypotension or increased C02 shouldn’t matter, with my previous caveats relating to cerebral perfusion pressures maintained….

It all has to do with the Monro-Kellie hypothesis having to do with pressure/vol relationships in an enclosed space…..

  55. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Flow is flow….

Is it? How does flow facilitate the functioning of the brain? Since I “never took any science classes” I’m sort of unclear on what happens when blood flows to the brain.

Batiste: How’s this? Batiste runs for any office at any level as a Democratic candidate, you win. If he becomes a campaign staff member–paid or unpaid–for a Dem candidate running for governor, House of Representatives, Senate, or President, you win. State leg, city council, water districts, dogcatcher, etc. don’t count.

If it happens any time before midnight EDT, May 4, 2008, you win. If the deadline passes and he has not done any of the above, I win.

    Stakes?

  56. pedromd07 says:

What about working for a left wing PAC trying to elect MULTIPLE democrats?

Stakes? You want to pick a charity?

  57. Duros62 says:

I mean, most of us doctors are idiots, that is why it takes us 12 years of higher education to figure out what people who have never had a science class in their lives learn in 15 minutes on the internet!

Well, no, I wouldn’t say that. More like car mechanics.

  58. Quaker in a Basement says:

What about working for a left wing PAC trying to elect MULTIPLE democrats?

Working for? Paid or unpaid? What capacity? And “left-wing” is pretty much in the eye of the beholder. (This is a pretty long stretch from your original claim, Peed’.) If he is named on the PAC’s website with a job title in the PAC, you win. If the PAC just quotes him, that doesn’t count. And it’s got to be a PAC that tilts to Dems by at least 2 to 1. No calling it “left-wing” just because the PAC backs the Dem presidential candidate.

    $100. Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

  59. pedromd07 says:

    Done…..See ya in a year…

  60. pedromd07 says:

    well, maybe sooner….

    Does this count Quaker?

    http://www.votevets.org/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=54

Or should we wait a year and count how many democrats they endorse?

  61. Quaker in a Basement says:

You trying to sandbag me, Peed’?

It counts. But only if this is what “far-left” means these days:

IAVA PAC is in the process of reviewing all qualified candidates for endorsement. To gain the endorsement, candidates must have qualified for campaign ribbons for the wars in Iraq and/or Afghanistan, go through a personal review process, and sign a document stating they agree with the policy objectives for which the PAC stands, which are:

    • Demand from the administration a victory strategy for Iraq that includes hard success metrics, which trigger American troop drawdowns so our forces can safely re-deploy from theater.
    • Mandatory full funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
    • Thorough investigation of the failure to provide adequate armor for our soldiers, and that those responsible held accountable.
    • An increase in the size of the active component army by eight units of action (brigades) and doubling the size of our Special Forces units in order to help relieve our over-extended army. (NOTE: This is not an increase in the number of troops currently deployed in Iraq).
    • Guaranteeing the exhaustion of diplomacy options by the President prior to approval for military conflict.
    • TRICARE (health care) for all members of the National Guard and Reserve and their families. As of July 2004, 20% of National Guardsmen lacked healthcare. Currently, Guardsmen and Reservists can buy into TRICARE if they are unemployed or are not covered by their employer. IAVA PAC supports extending TRICARE coverage to all Guardsmen and Reservists.
    • Lowering the retirement of age for members of the National Guard and Reserve from 60 to 55.
    • An immediate 5% immediate pay increase for our Armed Forces.

IAVA PAC will not consider party affiliation in the endorsement process.

You tell me, Peed’. Is this what a “far-left” outfit looks like?

  62. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Or this?

NEW YORK – Iraq veterans today blasted the Administration for its recent rhetoric on the war in Iraq. Republican Senior Advisor to VoteVets.org, Sam Schultz, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, released the following statement:

“I am a proud Republican, who ran for my party’s nomination for Congress in Indiana, because I believe in traditional values.

Even Republicans can be “far-left” now Peed’? We’re even sneakier than I thought.

  63. pedromd07 says:

you saw their policies, tell me it isn’t a left-wing group..

Like I said, we’ll wait a year and see what their percentage of democratic v republican candidates are….I’m a patient man!

  64. “you saw their policies, tell me it isn’t a left-wing group..”

Well, the group is pro-military demanding improved equipment, full funding for DoVA, improved access to health care for troops including mental health, pay raises for the men and women on the ground, and all-round better treatment of the troops.

So yes, they are a left-wing organization.

Of course, using that definition, no military man with any self-respect could vote for someone who wasn’t a left-winger.

  65. Quaker in a Basement says:

I asked first. You see the policies too. Explain how the policies I post above are “far-left” please.

  66. Quaker in a Basement says:

we’ll wait a year and see what their percentage of democratic v republican candidates are….

OK. Just to recap: VoteVets.org supports military veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns who run for public office.

Peed’ is betting that twice as many veterans will run as Democrats than will run as Republicans.

That’s a bet I’d be willing to lose.

  67. pedromd07 says:

actually I am betting that twice as many democrats will be SUPPORTED by this group (PAC) based on their current manifesto of who they will be supporting. It is exactly as I expected this guy sits on the board of a PAC, and his outbursts are simply self-serving promotion for his leftist comrades

Here are the couple of demands that you guys seem to miss:

Demand from the administration a victory strategy for Iraq that includes hard success metrics which trigger American troop drawdowns so our forces can safely re-deploy from theater

An increase in the size of the active component army by eight units of action (brigades) and doubling the size of our Special Forces units in order to help relieve our over-extended army. (NOTE: This is not an increase in the number of troops currently deployed in Iraq).

Now if you can’t see how these are litmus tests that few republicans will ever pass…well, like I said, we can add up the candidates they support in a year.

  68. Quaker in a Basement says:

Now if you can’t see how these are litmus tests that few republicans will ever pass…

Republicans are against increasing the size of the army and special forces?!?

    Who knew?

  69. Quaker in a Basement says:

And no, I didn’t miss those, Peed’. See items #1 and #4 in the list I posted 5/6 @ 7:00 pm.

  70. pedromd07 says:

hehehe….you can parse this group anyway you like…see you may 2008 with a list of the democrat candidates supported by this pac…..then you decide if it meets our criteria..you’re an honorable man, I trust you….
