Why Chris Matthews Is Perfect To Moderate The GOP Debate

7:58 pm EST May 1st, 2007 | Media | 34 Comments

“Matthews suggested Bush merely “went along” with the ideologues in attacking Iraq”.

Got that folks? Bush was dragged along like a babe through the woods by those naughty neocons, I mean it’s not like he’s commander in chief and the buck stops at his desk…

OH.
WAIT.

I agree, he sucked tonight. No mention of Edwards, who said today:

“Four years ago [the president] flew onto the deck of the U.S.S. Lincoln under a ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner to declare victory in Iraq. Today, all the photo ops in the world can’t hide the truth – the war is still raging, and the president’s mismanagement of Iraq is still dead wrong. Our troops have done everything they were asked and deserve a hero’s welcome. Instead, they remain in harm’s way; Iraq has become a breeding ground for terrorists; and we’re no closer to a permanent political solution than we were four years ago.

“But one thing has changed: The American people have given Congress a mission to end the war – but that mission hasn’t been accomplished yet.

“Congress needs to stand firm and strong. Congress should answer the president’s veto by sending him another bill with a timetable for withdrawal. And if he vetoes that one, Congress should send him another and another until we end this war and bring our troops home.

  2. pedromd07 says:

    little known fact:

George Bush dresses up in a black ninja outfit and collects his own intel!

In fact, he was reading John Kerry’s email and believed him when Kerry said Iraq had WMDs….Hillary too!

The entire united states government is just a front job, bush does everything himself!

You smarty pants liberals caught him…! Good pick up ollie

  3. Hedley says:

At least you recognize that President Bush is the commander in chief. The Democrats in Congress clearly don’t.

  4. Wilbur says:

The Democrats in Congress clearly don’t.

What the Democrats recognize is that “commander in chief” is not synonymous with “monarch” or “dictator”. Hedley clearly doesn’t.

Most of us like living in a democracy. Hedley clearly doesn’t.

Pedro: yes, Kerry and Hillary were wrong to be sucked in by the administration’s tarted-up intelligence and rhetoric.

  5. pedromd07 says:

they weren’t wrong, they had bad intel, just like the rest of the free world.

  6. Repack Rider says:

they had bad intel, just like the rest of the free world.

I wish they had asked me. I told everyone who would listen that the president was lying about the WMD.

I guess the rest of the free world didn’t read DKos. Everyone there knew.

  7. Surely the rest of the free world made the decision to invade and occupy Iraq. Oh, wait.

  8. merlallen says:

The 28%ers are a pretty entertaining bunch of WATBs.

  9. “they weren’t wrong, they had bad intel, just like the rest of the free world.”

Wrong, pedo. Most of the intelligence community believed Saddam had given up his WMD program after the first gulf war. However, the NeoCons in charge would only listen to the minority that agreed with them.

  10. SaveFarris says:

Pedro: yes, Kerry and Hillary were wrong to be sucked in by the administration’s tarted-up intelligence and rhetoric.

You mean the Clinton Administration, correct?

  11. mike in dc says:

The constitution gives the executive the power to conduct wars and promote generals etc., but it gives the legislative the power to start and end them, to fund or defund them, to set standards for the military services, etc. Congress ended military involvement in Somalia and in Haiti during Clinton’s term.

It is the President(and apparently some of his supporters) who has forgotten the Constitution, not the Congress.

Matthews is just cheerleading for his favorite cheerleader George W. Bush! Can’t the press be allowed shift blame for a man of such integrity? Its not like he lies or anything…. Of course don’t count Bush’s campaign promise that as Commander in Chief he would demand that withdrawl dates and exit strategy be in place in the case of war, because, the evil media was just spinning his words:)

  14. PD100 says:

I’ll leave in the minor probability that Bush was lead on. Since when has he ever proven that he can make any decisions on his own?

  15. pedromd07 says:

sorry repack, I didn’t realize it was YOU in the ninja suit that was smarter than every other intel service in the world and knew exactly what was going on in Iraq.

C.S. How about some evidence to back up your specious statement that “most” of the intel community knew saddam was giving up wmd, cause that is not what every other report has said.

  16. Duder says:

Of course Bush went along with the ideologues. Does anyone really think that The Decider really makes any decisions apart from which killer episode of Tom & Jerry to watch? W couldn’t find his ass with a funnel.

What is hard to believe is that Chris Matthews apparently believes that W has any ideas of his own.

  17. Ian says:

Will O-Dub report Matthews let Bill Maher bash Bush and laughed along with him.

    Of course not.

  18. Hedley says:

The Constitution gives the legislative branch the power to declare war, but nowhere does it give it the power to end war. While the legislative branch also has the power to raise and fund armies, it has no control over the placement of the military. Thus, while it is well within Congress’ power to choose to defund the war, establishing the withdrawal of troops is beyond Congress’ power — that is for the commander in chief.

  19. Repack Rider says:

repack, I didn’t realize it was YOU in the ninja suit that was smarter than every other intel service in the world and knew exactly what was going on in Iraq.

I wasn’t alone. There were lots of other people marching in the streets with the same message who all seemed to know.

Everyone on DKos knew. And it turned out they were right.

Do you attribute that to a remarkable coincidence?

The reason I joined DKos was because the predictions there have turned out to be the most accurate of any over the last few years. I go with what works.

  20. nihilistic_disintegration says:

    Pedro,

How about this guy? He knew what was up. And according to his report, so did the UN Security Council, the IAEA, and “many experts on centrifuges and Iraqi rockets” (who viewed the CIA analysis re: the aluminum tubes as “atrocious and deceptive.”)

The best line: “This case serves to remind us that decision-makers are not above misusing technical and scientific analysis to bolster their political goals. The problem is that such a strategy denigrates the process of conducting impartial technical analysis and misleads the public.”

We were lied into a war, Pedro. The Cheney impeachment will expose all of the lies, so stay tuned.

  21. PD100 says:

“Will O-Dub report Matthews let Bill Maher bash Bush and laughed along with him.

    Of course not”

If Matthews invited any comedian slightly to the left of Goebbels, they would probably do the same.

  22. mike in dc says:

The perfect way to call Bush’s bluff on all this is to give the Iraqi government exactly one year from passage to meet all benchmarks, with the consequences of non-compliance on too many points being the cutoff of all funding for operations there by the end of 2008, with the timetable of redeployment to be determined by the chief executive in consultation with the military.
If Bush vetoes that, what’s the rationale?

“I oppose this bill because it prevents me from passing the buck to the next guy.”

  23. mike in dc says:

    Hedley,
Congress can specifically designate what funds are to be spent upon, and probably even designate that misuse/misdirection of funds triggers a revocation of all funding authorization. Ergo, they have the constitutional authority to end the war, and to even set a rough timetable for ending it, simply by designating what the funds are for, and that failure to use the funds for this purpose will result in no further funding.

  24. Duros62 says:

Will O-Dub report Matthews let Bill Maher bash Bush and laughed along with him.

    Of course not.

What the flying monkey fuck does that have to do with anything?

Matthews is a first-class A-one buttlicker of the highest order.

He laughed right along with Ann Coulter on the numerous times she has disgraced the airwaves, so freakin’ what?

  25. nihilistic_disintegration says:

Look, Pedro, there were a bunch of other people who knew that the Bush regime was lying to us.

And he’s not even wearing a ninja suit.

  26. nihilistic_disintegration says:

Pedro: “they had bad intel, just like the rest of the free world.

    Wrong again.

And I quote: “In the weeks leading up to the war, examples of high-level European disagreement with Washington were abundant.”

Well, that’s just Europe. They hardly count, right?

  27. Nimrod Gently says:

Except Britain of course, but then we don’t do anything without your permission anyway. We can’t remember why.

  28. hazmaq says:

I actually protested Politico or MSNBC’s right to be involved. They haven’t played fair with the Left much better than Fox has. And we threw Fox out.

Brian Williams, god that guy is such a slimyslug, (no dis to slimyslugs) was programmend to take the debate out of the debate and turn the Dems appearance into a boring non-event.

You watch, Matthews will turn his debate into a pro- Republican orgy against the Dems.

If you thought you’d hear about what’s good for the people, the country or the world, think again.

For that, I suggest you listen to Hugo Chavez on FreeSpeech TV.

    Oil at half price anyone?

  29. pedromd07 says:

nice try guys….the euroweenies didn’t want to go to war (big suprise, the french let the nazis walk right in too), but they all agreed he had WMD or was working on procuring them….

Next dumb-ass leftist argument please…except from Hazmaq, he is an actual socialist apparently

  30. Quaker in a Basement says:

the french let the nazis walk right in too

You’re either uninformed or…I don’t think there are any other choices.

  31. “C.S. How about some evidence to back up your specious statement that “most” of the intel community knew saddam was giving up wmd, cause that is not what every other report has said.”

Ever heard of Scott Ritter? Probably not.

He’s a republican. He voted for G.H.W.Bush in 2000. He was also the chief weapons inspector in more than a dozen inspection missions in Iraq and was part of more than a dozen additional missions.

He said Saddam didn’t have WMD and said that most of the intelligence back him up.

Added to the numerous reports of politicians trying to fix the intelligence to back up their war plans, it’s clear that the intelligence didn’t say Saddam had WMD.

  32. nihilistic_disintegration says:

Pedro: “Next dumb-ass leftist argument please…

Are you fucking kidding? I just pounded you down with multiple citations refuting your bullshit unsubstantiated claim that “every other intel service in the world” knew Saddam had WMDs and all you can do is stick your fingers in your ears and say “la la la la I’m not listening to you?”

So Dick Durbin and the Senate Intelligence Committee are “euroweenies”? The IAEA and the CIA are “euroweenies”? The Bush Administration are “euroweenies”?

You’re a typical conservative, Pedro. You think you’re sooooooo smart, and yet you can’t seem to come up with any argument other than “Nuh-uh! Bush is great! Lib’ruls suck!”

    I guess I shouldn’t have expected more.

  33. pedromd07 says:

Ahh scott ritter…the man who refused to discuss prisons built to torture children by saddam, because he was afraid it was too inflammatory…

Yea, please use him as a source more often.

nihilistic I don’t know what you are talking about…prewar, none of those entities believed that Saddam DIDN’T have WMDS….and citing sources that say someone doesn’t want to go to war dos not refute that….

  34. nihilistic_disintegration says:

Pedro: “prewar, none of those entities believed that Saddam DIDN’T have WMDS

Got any evidence to back up that claim? Didn’t think so.

From my 3rd link: “To suggest that European states agreed with Washington’s WMD assessments but put their citizens at risk of nuclear-biological-chemical poisoning is too farfetched to believe.”

citing sources that say someone doesn’t want to go to war…

you’re so smart, Pedro, it’s not hard to see why everyone believes you’re a real doctor. Did you even look at the links? Didn’t think so.

Let’s see, we’ve got the CIA, the IAEA, the Senate Intelligence Committee all saying that the administration’s claims are false. We’ve got several European governments saying the same. What else do you want? Do you want Germany saying that they don’t believe the testimony of Bush Golden-Boy Curveball? Here.

From that link: “The German said his service ‘was not sure whether Curveball was actually telling the truth.’” (Curveball is the one who gave the false info about the mobile weapons labs.)

From that same piece: the National Security Council “believed the nuclear case was weak.”

And This piece which explains how the Australian intelligence agency knew that “US intelligence on Iraq was badly skewed by political pressure, worst-case analysis and a stream of garbage-grade intelligence concocted by Iraqis desperate for US intervention in Iraq.” But also “It wasn’t just the Australians who were mystified by the accumulating US trash. The French, Germans and Russians had long before refused to be persuaded by Washington’s line.”

And the kicker: “Australian intelligence agencies made it clear to the Government all along that Iraq did not have a massive WMD program.”

So to sum up: Pedro = Dumbass.
