Both Instapundit and The Corner link to this commentary from Hollywood actor Fred Thompson as if it contains something of value. On The Corner, Peter Robinson writes “When you read the commentary, you can hear Thompson’s voice.” and further gushes how “impressive” it is when a Thompson flack informs us that he writes them on his own. Um, Fred Thompson, as I pointed out before, writes the most obvious things in the world. This most recent essay says essentially “Other countries sometimes say stuff about America I disagree with, and I love America”. Nothing more or less. I know the con blogosphere is in the tank for Thompson but Christ almighty aren’t you guys tired of lowering the standards? The last time around it got you George W. Bush and look how that turned out.
Lemme put on my concern troll hat and offer some free advice to the GOP: When you hit the bottom of the barrel, stop digging.
(And when you’re down at the bottom of the barrel, please say “hi” to Pedro for me.)
Jimmmmm, the barrel of self-delusion has no bottom.
Man, I just read that commentary. Not exactly a mental giant in terms of foreign policy, if that’s any indication.
Fred to the world= fuck you.
Obama has no more of a record than Thompson.
Well, Thompson is certainly no Bush. He wouldn’t be a bad President. I just think we can do better.
Thompson’s positions are essentially the same as McCain’s. Minus the experience and intelligence and leadership ability. As a matter of fact, he was soliciting donations on behalf of McCain before he decided he might like to run for President himself.
Why get a poor man’s McCain when you can get the real article?
Obama has no more of a record than Thompson.
Yes, but at least Obama has something to say.
Obama has something to say? Let us know when he says it.
Yeah, I’ll keep you posted.
Hedley, I might recommend “The Audacity of Hope” or “Dreams from my Father.” Both are pretty good reads.
Oh, Ollie.
Typical O-Dub, I’m right, everyone else is an idiot. Oh, Ollie, you and Rosie would make a good couple.
I’m reading Audacity of Hope right now. Not exactly Tom Clancy, but it ain’t bad either. But I don’t expect Hedley to read up on the competition.
Even though even Patton read up on Rommel.
You magnificent son of a bitch! I read your book!
Lowering the bar?
Hey, compared to the current mannekin, Thompson’s a regular Walt Shakespere.
Hedley, I might recommend “The Audacity of Hope”
Democratics and Republicans should cooperate more?!? You can’t get much more boilerplate nothingness than that. It’s Audacity to think it’s any more than “I’m a uniter, not a divider” wrapped in shiny new packaging.
I think he meant you to read the whole book, not just the blurb on the back, or the National Review piece about it or the voice in your head or whatever.
I am getting a kick out of Oliver’s use of “Hollywood Actor Fred Thompson.” Maybe you should read up on how Senator Thompson became an actor. (I’m sure someone else at Media Matters is assigned to scour his every word, past and present- kind of like you do with Hannity and Colmes.)
So are you saying a guy who is a regular cast member of a tv series, and has appeared in supporting roles in multiple films isn’t a Hollywood actor? That’s news to me.
No Oliver- it’s just funny how you use the term as a way to marginalize him, though his resume stacks up quite well with Barack Obama, John Edwards, and even Hillary. Typically clever Ollieprop. You’ve always been good with words and creating your own definitions. (I’ve always been impressed with your editorial skills.)
I’m certainly not implying that he’s not at Hollywood Actor. (Although his home is in Virginia and he “shoots” in NYC.)
In a world where Dems who occasionally visit LA are Hollywood Liberals, I just don’t see how a guy who’s a part of the industry isn’t a Hollywood Actor.
SaveFarris, laziness is not a virtue. Read the book first and then talk about its meaning.
I don’t think calling Fred Thompson a Hollywood Actor is marginalising him so much as describing him.
He does have quite an impressive CV, but let’s face it, he’s not ur-running because he used to be a Senator for Tennessee or because he’s an attorney, and certainly not because of his S&L lobbying. It’s because he’s an actor.
Every single role Fred has played has been a no-nonsense government official…This is who the man is and he’s exactly who we need to pull our chestnuts out of several fires.
Unpredictable, egotistical and delusions of grandeur sufficiently defines all the alternatives to the extent if you can’t readily see them for who they are by now, you have several other issues in your life you don’t see either.
I think the Hollywood part is a dig a GOP hypocrisy in general. After all, how many times have left-wing actors been told to shut up and stop talking about politics?
“Every single role Fred has played has been a no-nonsense government official…This is who the man is and he’s exactly who we need to pull our chestnuts out of several fires”
Wow.
For all of their tough talk and manly acting, the Repubs have a weird penchant for man crushes. Are they all gay?
And the man is a Hollywood actor. The repubs loves them some actors.
“Wow.”
I second that, “Wow.”
TMLibsTFBraincells is 100%, Grade A crazy. The kind of crazy that gets you written up in text books.
To all those who would be critical……check out the head to head polls at pollingreport.com…….be careful of what you so readily dismiss….. FDT is within 6 points of HRC without declaring and without spending a dime….you had better turn up your negative rhetoric a lot more because it is having no effect so far.
Let’s see.. Fred hasn’t never governed anything, has never turned around anything, doesn’t like to campaign, lacks the stamina, has reputation of being lackadaisical and lacks the enthusiasm. He’s presidential material!
Every single role Fred has played which was written and envisioned by someone else and recited by Fred has been a no-nonsense government official…This is who the man is at least as far as the script says and he’s exactly who we need to pull our chestnuts out of several fires”
There. Fixed it.
Thank you sooooo much!:
Good luck with your site in the future!e
