There is one retailer that has the power to call the winner of the protracted Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD fight and that vendor is Wal-Mart.

Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD by a margin of 2-1. I think people who are early adaptors into the new format are not likely to shop at Wal-mart and are much more likely to shop at specialty stores or online.
I think those Blu-Ray numbers are suspect and include PS3 purchases. I kind of want HD to win so I know what to buy and so Sony learns a lesson.
