He and McCain have pretty much the same views and always voted together in the Senate. The only difference between Thompson and McCain, from the perspective of conservatives, is that Thompson is a team player. McCain is a maverick. Which is why a guy like Ben Nelson or Robert Byrd can be okay to Democrats, but not Joe Lieberman. Which is ironic, considering that Thompson is not exactly a doctrinaire conservative either.
