I’ve listened to Rush Limbaugh for nearly as long as I’ve been alive. First because I come from an extremely conservative family and now simply because it would seem I love to get angry. (I guess it doesn’t say much for my life that I spend my spare time yelling at the radio, but whatever.) I find it particularly funny that Limbaugh is whining about how he’s “taken out of context” – that’s a load from a qualified life-long listener with a brain. He’s an ass – popular or not – and he is without a doubt a bigot and a sexist. However, he has every right to say what he pleases. That’s the American way.
On another note, I firmly believe that Imus should not have been fired – not because I agree with him or I find him funny – he’s another one I didn’t like but listened to – but because censorship in any form is still censorship. Just because someone is an offensive ass doesn’t mean they should be stifled, left right or center.
In a perfect world everyone would agree and we’d all get along and no one would say these things or have an audience for them. This is not the perfect world. This is real life – it’s hard – get a helmet.

I’ve been hearing REAL panic in HateRadio: With the fall of Imus, they can see that their “millions of listeners a week” bullshit means little when a ClearChannel or ViaCom corporate board meeting is deciding the next business move and the direction for a bunch of affiliates.
Hey, let the market speak out. All MediaMatters does is shine a light and bring out to the attention of the few corporate sponsors exactly what their dollars have been funding.

Regardless of how much of an ass – popular or not – that Rush is, he still has a right to say what he says. He’s not trying to incite violence and neither was Imus. Should they be on free radio from a market standpoint? Probably not due to the nature of what they say – paid radio would be a better option – but that’s a market issue, and I’m sure they’ll end up there eventually simply because not everyone is into their brand of crap.
It’s sticks and stones, and a politically-charged grade school argument at that. You’re not talking about actual newcasters here – Rush and Imus are glorified opinion columnists. They are entertainers (though I don’t find either to be entertaining). They aren’t news anchors. Holding them to that standard is moot.
My greater concern here is how far do we want to take this? When Oliver implies that Bush is an imbecile or Rush is a pig that’s okay, but Imus’s comments and Rush’s squealing aren’t? That’s a dangerous double standard and a slippery slope …
So you’re saying that Rush’s employers should be forced to keep him on, no matter what he says? Who is the entity that forces them to renew his contract?
I think instead that such decisions should be left up to the employer. If they think their employee is too shameful to keep on, then they should be allowed to fire that employee. Alternatively, if they decide to keep that employee, they should be prepared for other people exercising their right to publicly shame their racist employee with his own words. It’s a free country after all, LMMAtthews. No censorship took place, and there’s no slippery slope. If there were, we would have gone down it a long time ago with Jimmy the Greek. Nothing about the Imus situation is new at all.

But what I’m saying is the crowd that suddenly started crying foul (’cause if you’ve heard Imus this isn’t the first time he’s said something more than a little bit out of line) here smacks of impending censorship. “You can’t say that” is far different than “you should know enough to not say that”. “You can’t say that” brings to mind banned books, movies, and McCarthy. “You should have known better” or “you’re an ass” make the allowance that you had a right to say it but you’re an idiot for doing so. Perhaps I’m making too much of it, but I find it disconcerting.
I have no idea how expressing outrage to sponsors and private companies is somehow censorship. Had the FCC gotten involved in the Imus issue, I would have been right there defending his sorry ass.

I just have a different read, LMM. Instead of hearing critics say “you can’t say X” in some sort of absolute sense, I’m hearing critics say “you can’t say X without us publicly shaming you about it,” which is basically all that anyone did in the Imus case. If X is actually shameworthy, then the critics will be listened to. If it’s not, then they’ll have no effect.
In the case of Limbaugh, what’s he’s said is actually very shameworthy, but his bigot fans, and bigot backers HAVE NO SHAME, and so the critics have had little impact so far.
