Keith Olbermann’s Role In MSNBC Firing Don Imus

8:57 pm EST April 11th, 2007 | Media | 33 Comments

He kind of slipped it in under the radar, but in this video clip interviewing Jesse Jackson, Keith Olbermann reveals that he was one of the NBC employees referenced by NBC president Steve Capus who said Imus had to be fired for his statements.

Along with Al Roker and Ron Allen I’m sure it made an impression on them. Kudos.

I can’t defend what Imus said, but then again, he’s an idiot talk radio blowhard.

No matter how offensive his statements, we’re just upping his profile by going on and on about it.

  2. NSangoma says:

It is alright for us (North American Negroes) to use these words, but it is automatically racism and misogyny when someone white uses these self same words; this will not stand.

    ABS evening news this evening

    Lead Story
8 minutes on the 3 lacross students

    Second Story
3 minutes on the hundreds of thousands effected by the new 15 month combat duty tour.

How did the other news networks treat these stories?

  5. VRWC drone says:

Way to go Keith! You really sucked up to ‘ol Jesse Jackson there, stepping up and taking credit for getting Imus canned while Jesse nods approvingly.

O-Dub, did you clip out the part at the end of the segment where Olbermann rolled over on his back so that Jesse could rub his tummy and tell him “Who’s a Good Boy”?

  6. VRWC drone says:

And I look forward to the day when one of Olbermann’s fellow NBC employees has the opportunity to step up and tell the NBC president that Keith should be fired for his statements and/or actions.

He dodged a bullet with his “Nazi salute” last year, but now that we know that the penalty for offensive on-air comments is termination, it’s just a matter of time.

  7. VRWC drone says:

Mullah Cimoc: so control the usa media by masters in tel aviv acting through monopolists and FCC bureaucracy, keep all ameriki so stupid for killing the muslim and the torture.

    Dr. AGH, is that you?

  8. Repack Rider says:

Keith seems to be the only person on TV with any sense of morality.

  9. Hedley says:

Is his “sense of morality” before or after his use of the Nazi salute? Or is it before or after he calls Rita Cosby “dumber than a suitcase full of rocks”?

  10. Marty says:

I call bullshit on Olby. Wasn’t it Olby that said he wouldn’t pass judgement on Imus because they worked for the same network?

Let’s find that clip from the Dan Patrick radio show…

  11. Marty says:

And what the f-ck is up with Rosie O’Donnell defending the blowhard, John Kerry supporting, racist, Don Imus?

Did she really say that Imus shouldn’t be fired?

  12. Bill l. says:

You mean the Nazi salute that was directed at Bill O’Reilly? Is there much point to running down…again…O’Reilly’s offensive behavior, often times directed at Mr. Olbermann? It’s not like Olbermann was pledging fealty to the Klan or sending a message to Jews or other minorities. Wait, maybe it was a secret attack on the Irish!

Rita Cosby certainly seems dumber that a “suitcase of rocks.” Is there any reason beyond office etiquette or something that Olbermann should feel he isn’t free to express his opinion of her, particularly in private? Rita Cosby represents some minority in some universally understood way that slamming her is a slam at the larger group (like the use of “Uncle Tom” or “Aunt Jemima”)?

“Olbermann” may someday enjoy the reflexive con disgust that luminaries like “Clinton” and “Carter” currently bask in.

  13. Macswain says:

    Bill I.,

Your wasting your time trying to explain complex concepts like context and intent to an idiot like Hedley.

According to many righties, we learn today that any word ever used by some unidentied rapper is available for them to use anytime, anyplace and even in a racist manner without any criticism.

  14. Hedley says:

I wasn’t aware that there was a “context” in which a Nazi salute is acceptable.

And Macswain, if you are going to call someone an “idiot” first learn the difference between “your” and “you’re”. Context.

  15. Here’s a real piece of apologist, racist and now-outdated puke …

  16. Douglas Watts says:

    Folks upthread …

    Just a dumb question ….

Why do you visit a blog written by a young black man whose slogan is “Like Kryptonite to Stupid” and then type out racist comments ….

Has the self-referential idiocy of this ever occurred to you ?

    Don’t answer.

    Cheers to Mr. Willis.

  17. Macswain says:

Your typo police nonsense just proves my point that you’re an idiot.

But add to that your self-appointed PC cop ruling that the Nazi salute can’t be used sarcastically to mock those of a tyranical bent or under any circumstances. I await your critical attack of Mel Brooks and all the audiences that flocked to “The Producers.”

Oh, I know you understand the difference. You just were so anxious to attack Olberman that you didn’t see what a buffoon you were making of yourself with your illogical charge.

  18. Marty says:

    Ah yes.

A suspension and sensitivity training is really what Olby thought should have happened.

    http://olbermannwatch.com/audios/olpopocrisy2.mp3

Olby was just pandering to the Rev. Jackson.

    Comedy.

  19. Charles Walker says:

I am tired of hearing about Don Imus and just as tired of hearing about how black People are being mistreated, TV used to be for entertainment, now it’s only purpose is news,We don’t have enough news to report on 24 hrs. a day, so these news reporters get started on somthing and just run it in the ground,

  20. Hedley says:

So now Olbermann is a movie star. That makes it okay I guess. Got to love Hollywood.

  21. Jadegold says:

Heck, Imus is probably in negotiations with Roger Ailes right now.

  22. Duros62 says:

TV used to be for entertainment, now it’s only purpose is news,

I think you got that backwards.

  23. fd10801 says:

Olbermann is a world class dick. Anybody that would advocate that a fellow employee be fired, when it’s none of his business, is a smarmy son of a bitch.

And if this were my blog, I’d tell you how I really feel, and not be so diplomatic.

  24. Anonymous says:

Frank forgot to take his meds before posting again.

  26. william says:

Olbermann pandering to Mr. Hymie-town? Nah, couldn’t be.

  27. empezar says:

Keith Overthetop will do or say anything that will assist his sorry azz to get ratings. O’Reilly has him so badly beaten, Overthetop is totally off the radar screen. I watched his ranting one night on a replay. Haven’t been back. This clown would be a janitor in a run down apartment building were it not for cable tv and MSNBC who by the way have the lowest ratings EVER!
Imus gave them rating respectability and all the other on air personalities were in the tank.
Laugh away Jesse Jackazz and Al the Sharpie. Your day is coming hopefully sooner than later.
I predict a white backlash against ALL the advertisers that abandoned the IMAN. My nex car will not be GM. nor will I purchase any product or service on the list sent out by friends of the iMAN.

  28. Duros62 says:

Anybody that would advocate that a fellow employee be fired, when it’s none of his business, is a smarmy son of a bitch.

The president of NBC asked everybody that works there.

  29. Duros62 says:

Laugh away Jesse Jackazz and Al the Sharpie. Your day is coming hopefully sooner than later.

Is it just me, or does that sound like a veiled threat?

  30. fd10801 says:

Duros: If the President of NBC has to take a poll of employees before he fires someone, then he shouldn’t be the President.

  31. The Dark Avenger says:

I’ll be sure not to vote for him when he comes up for re-election.

And the thought of the employees actually having some input in the work environment–Horrors!

Hiring and firing doesn’t come under the heading of “work environment” in my book.
