Way too cosy with the powerful. When you dine and party with the people you’re supposed to be covering, it is impossible to be as tough on them as you should be.

    Small quibble with the headline.

I think “Why No One Should Trust The Press” is a little more pointed.

The argument that things have always been this way has some merit, but there are two (at least) differences in the current circumstances.

One, the relationships have never been so tight and so partisan. If there was anything revealed in the Libby trial it was this: the press/media sees themselves as allies of the Bush/Cheney Junta as against the Democratic Party and the American public.

Two, the voters rely on the corporate press/media more now than at any time in American history. As partisan and ‘inside’ as early newspapers were, there were always independents and there were always rivals. In our time, the only rivalry seems to be who can suck up the most.
