My ex-husband did the same thing when he came home. He was gone for nearly two years. He didn’t call ahead and let my son know he was coming home - went straight from the airport to our son’s school and surprised him. He’s older than that little guy but the reaction was the same nonetheless. He was just overjoyed that his dad came home.
Unfortunately his father is being redeployed, and since my son reads the news he’s terrified for his father.
He actually asked my husband (his step-dad) if he would mind adopting him if his father “gets killed this time”.
No child should feel they have to make a plan like that when the leader of the country couldn’t even make one for how to win it, let alone why it was necessary. I hate this damned war.
