Congress Tackles The Tough Issues

Sigh. Stop. Please stop.

A bipartisan group of U.S. House members offered a simple message to the American people today: “Pray, or God will lift his caring hand from the great nation.”

Over three dozen representatives joined U.S. Rep. J. Randy Forbes (R-Va.) on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol today to urge Americans to pray for the U.S. and its leaders for at least five minutes each week. Forbes, who is also the leader of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, said he hopes “God will hear our prayers and heal our land.”

James Dobson Exercises Veto On Fred Thompson

4:34 pm EST March 28th, 2007 | News | 12 Comments

The Republican party sold itself off to the religious far right a while ago, and as such they have given them veto power over the party nomination.

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson appeared to throw cold water on a possible presidential bid by former Sen. Fred Thompson while praising former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is also weighing a presidential run, in a phone interview Tuesday.

“Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said of Thompson. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression,” Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party’s conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.

Democrats may or may not be fully satisfied by their candidates, but there isn’t the utter rejection and dejection the Republican grassroots seems to have for their candidates so far. To quote Katie Couric, “some might say” this shows the inevitable decline of the party.

Bush Really Gets Desperate

The Iraq policy is going down in flames so he resorts to… some guy with a website.

The missions I described are only the opening salvos in what is going to be a sustained effort. Yet, the Iraqi people are beginning to say — see positive changes. I want to share with you how two Iraqi bloggers — they have bloggers in Baghdad, just like we’ve got here — (laughter) — “Displaced families are returning home, marketplaces are seeing more activity, stores that were long shuttered are now reopening. We feel safer about moving in the city now. Our people want to see this effort succeed. We hope the governments in Baghdad and America do not lose their resolve.”

Some Guy With A Website, now justifying the Iraqi “surge”.

Straw Man?

National Review’s Victor Davis Hanson asks

Why the liberal furor over 300?

Has their really been any kind of “furor” over the movie? I haven’t heard anything. I saw it, it was entertaining for what it is – people kicking ass and having their asses kicked – though it was pretty thin compared to Sin City. But is there any kind of “furor” over it besides conservatives looking silly using it as some kind of allegory to the war in Iraq?

I think Hanson’s just making stuff up or making hay out of mostly nothing.

I will say, however, more Lena Headey.

Iraq War Denialist John McCain Ripped A New One By Michael Ware

6:10 pm EST March 27th, 2007 | News | 13 Comments

John McCain, whose campaign for the presidency is badly faltering, appeared on CNN in order to spin once again for the Iraq war and the “surge” strategy. Amazingly, McCain reaffirmed his previous claim that Iraq is safe, alleging that Americans can just walk around with no problem. Thankfully CNN correspondent Michael Ware is actually in Baghdad and makes clear that McCain’s rhetoric bares no relationship whatsoever to reality.
