James Dobson Exercises Veto On Fred Thompson

The Republican party sold itself off to the religious far right a while ago, and as such they have given them veto power over the party nomination.

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson appeared to throw cold water on a possible presidential bid by former Sen. Fred Thompson while praising former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is also weighing a presidential run, in a phone interview Tuesday.

“Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said of Thompson. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression,” Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party’s conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.

Democrats may or may not be fully satisfied by their candidates, but there isn’t the utter rejection and dejection the Republican grassroots seems to have for their candidates so far. To quote Katie Couric, “some might say” this shows the inevitable decline of the party.

How powerful is Dobson these days? I know he talks a big game but if Fred Thompson is the only Republican who is even moderately electable, Dobson will fall in line just like he always does.

  2. Christian says:

Fred Thompson is a member of the Church of Christ. He just doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve as others might. It’s what is in Fred’s heart that matters.

Who the fuck is Dobson to decide who is or isn’t a Christian. That motherfucker sure as hell isn’t one anymore than Robertson or Falwell are.

  5. Born Again Christian says:

What a hypocrit merlallan is. He just did to Dr. Dobson, Robertson and Dr. Falwell what he criticized Dr. Dobson for doing to Fred Thompson. By the way, being a member of a church does not make you a Christian. A personal relationship with Jesus Christ does. Please stop criticizing people for the same bad behavior you do. Just for the record, I know Dr. Falwell and he is certainly a man of God.

Well, when you see him, tell him and Mr. Dobson to shut the fuck up.

  7. SpiderJ says:

On a sidenote–does nobody know how to spell the word “hypocrite” anymore? I’ve seen so many iterations of it tossed around in the past three days on this site and others that it makes my head swim.

    “Hypocrite.”
    “Hypocrisy.”

    As you were.

    Thank you, Spider.

Statements such as this eviscerate the pro-family movement and Christianity!

Dr. Dobson’s position has denigrated to being that of a political hack.

While I also admire Newt, he is a theorist who brilliantly lectures but who fails to motivate action.

Fred Thompson is a member of the Church of Christ. He just doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve as others might.

It’s what is in Fred’s heart and his ability (in my opinion) to MOTIVATE Americans to ACT on the moral values that are being suppressed by the secular humanists in our society that is his strength and we need that today.
