As soon as I write this, Republican flavor of the moment Fred Thompson comes out as a Denier.

I thought dissent was the highest form of patriotism.

  2. Jay says:

The problem is, Thompson is not denying anything. But he is however, asking the same question a lot of people are asking and that nobody is able to seem to answer: Where is the verifiable evidence that the warming we’ve seen is anything other than a trend or that is man-made?

Unless there are little green men driving Cadillac Escalades and Lincoln Navigators on Mars, perhaps Oliver in his non-denial state can explain to everybody why that planet and others (Jupiter, Pluto) are warming along with Earth?

  3. Duros62 says:

Coincidence? I think not. Clearly, Thompson has LKTS in his favorites.

Hey, Jay, I’m doing my part. I’ve got 3 big ass air conditioners on my front lawn, pointing up in the sky and running full blast 24/7.

  4. SpiderJ says:

Is there really such desperation among the “skeptics” that they’re holding on to this false “Mars is warming too!” equivocation as if it disproves anything?

No, Mars does not, as far as we know, have human beings and industrialization to cause its ice caps to melt.

It also happens to be a completely different frakkin planet. The atmosphere is different, the seasons are different, the amount of time it takes to orbit the sun is different. It’s Mars. Not Earth. Mars.

If you can find me a parallel Earth 90 million miles on the other side of the sun that is experiencing no climate change whatsoever despite having a similar life population, then you have something to present as contradicting evidence. Until then, it’s apples and oranges.

  5. Duros62 says:

It’s not even apples and oranges, Spider. It’s apples and Fruit Loops.

  6. Jay says:

Yes, it is a different planet fellas, but it lends credence to the view that some of the warming taking place is due to variations in solar activity.

  7. Duros62 says:

tyfoc, I want to congratulate you on that piece. Very well written and immensely reasonable.
    I salute you, sir.

  8. Wilbur says:

tyfoc, perhaps you can direct me to a reputable scientist anywhere in the world, who is willing to stand up and say with complete conviction: MANKIND HAS NO EFFECT ON GLOBAL WARMING, SEA LEVELS WILL NEVER RISE, TEMPERATURES WILL NOT RISE A BIT, PALM TREES WILL NOT GROW IN MICHIGAN EVEN IF EACH ONE OF US KEEPS THREE HUMMERS IDLING 24 HOURS A DAY JUST TO POWER UP OUR CAMP TV’s.

Why -on this issue and this issue alone- do you guys need 100% certainty to take action?

Is it just because teh moooonbatz is for it, so you have to be against it?

If we pretend it was all your idea to begin with, will you act to get something done?

  9. Wilbur says:

Yes, it is a different planet fellas, but it lends credence to the view that some of the warming taking place is due to variations in solar activity.

Jay, can you refer us to any reputable scientist who has claimed that mankind is 100% to blame for global warming?

Of course other factors may be involved! Thing is, we don’t have any control over solar activity but we do have control over how much greenhouse gas we produce.

  10. Wilbur says:

I thought dissent was the highest form of patriotism.

SaveFarris, who has questioned Thompson’s patriotism?

Oh, I see, it’s the standard right-wing ethic: “If I criticize your point of view it’s just my opinion; if you criticize my point of view it’s a denial of my freedom of speech.”

  11. fd10801 says:

I thought dissent was the highest form of patriotism.

I made a similar point a few weeks ago. All you lefties act like wannabe cynics and skeptics when it comes to anything Republican, or anything to do with the military.

I think the reason you guys have fallen for this global warming stuff is because inside every liberal there’s a Luddite.

  12. Duros62 says:

Speaking of Luddites, still waiting on Pedro to give us that link.

  13. Jadegold says:

    Yup. Tyfoc is a Denier.

Note Feynman’s “cargo cult” speech was aimed at social vice empirical sciences. Social science metrics are difficult to develop and accurately measure. Modeling in the social sciences is virtually impossible.

OTOH, there is no shortage of data WRT climate change and we can model climate variances with a fairly good degree of fidelity.

The fact remains no global warming skeptic or denier can refute the existing evidence. So, when you see Inhofe holding up a picture of icicles and saying ‘Where’s the global warming?’–it’s really the best the deniers can do from a ’scientific’ perpective.

  14. fd10801 says:

Jadegold: How can one refute a prediction? With a Time Machine?

If the Globalwarmians were unassaillably correct, there would far more people believing them — and I don’t mean the birkenstock bunch.

  15. Oliver says:

Up is never down, no matter what you want it to be.

  16. Wilbur says:

To think that two and two are four
    And neither five nor three
The heart of man has long been sore
And long tis wont to be.

    -A.E. Housman

  17. Wilbur says:

If the Globalwarmians were unassaillably correct, there would far more people believing them — and I don’t mean the birkenstock bunch.

From ABC News, where Drudge rules their world:

“A vast majority, 85 percent, believes global warming probably is occurring…

In 1998, 31 percent called global warming extremely or very important to them personally. Today that’s sharply higher, 49 percent, with an additional three in 10 calling it “somewhat” important.”

Wow, better buy some stock in Birkenstock.

  18. fd10801 says:

A vast majority … believes global warming probably is occurring

Call me when a vast majority believe it is actually occurring.

In fact, call when a vast majority of scientists believe it’s actually occurring.

  19. Bill L. says:

    Groundhog day again.

Once more, stop talking about Mars or any other planet as if any of it has any bearing on the current push to curb man made contributions to climate change on Earth. That ship sailed years ago.

Sorry tyfoc, but climate change is indeed valid , testable, science.

  20. fd10801 says:

Bill L.: Are you seriously suggesting that “scienceness” was defined by a Judge?

When did they start teaching science in Law School?

  21. Zython says:

In fact, call when a vast majority of scientists believe it’s actually occurring.

So…you’re saying that there are at MOST 57 “scientists” in the world?

And even IF the majority of people didn’t believe it (which could only be argued if non-americans weren’t counted as “people”), over half of people believe that astrology is an actual science. That doesn’t make them right.

  22. Dugger says:

    Wilbur

You have really kicked some impressive strawman butt.

Again, the issue is how much of the current small spike increase is manmade and how much is not. And whether its temporary or permanent. Global warming enthusiasts say permanent and all or almost all is manmade. Doubters ask why this little spike can’t be another of the many historical spikes in warming – having almost nothing to do with CO2 or human factors.

The Mars question is very valid in this context. The sun is getting hotter. Earth warms a little. Mars warms a little. Hmmmm. Nope, better move along. That science is settled. Spread the soot on the ice caps. No. Sorry. That was the earlier settled science per Newsweek and Time. Get rid of all autos!

  23. fd10801 says:

So…you’re saying that there are at MOST 57 “scientists” in the world?

Where did you get that idea?

I don’t how many climatologists there are, but I do know that they are not in unanimous agreement about CO2 caused global warming. Some, and again I don’t know how many, are saying that it is the sun that is contributing to global warming — to a greater degree than CO2.

I was suggesting that Wilbur check and see if the “vast majority” of scientists believe in CO2 – generated global warming.

  24. Duros62 says:

    Get rid of all autos!

Who ever said that? Why do you keep talking like that, like there will be some sort of pogrom on cars?
It would be better if the cars we have were more efficient, that’s all.

  25. Dugger says:

    duros,

    Who said dat?

Why the world’s leading global warming catastrophe monger:

“We now know that their cumulative impact on the global environment is posing a mortal threat to the security of every nation that is more deadly than that of any military enemy are ever again likely to confront.

…it ought to be possible to establish a coordinated global program to accomplish the strategic goal of completely eliminating the internal combustion engine over, say, a twenty-five-year period”

  26. Rex Mundane says:

eliminating the internal combustion engine over, say, a twenty-five-year period

…you read that and heard him as saying that he wants to ban all transit of any kind, didnt you? No alternative engines, no hybrids, no electric, no nothing. He wants to eliminate the I-C Engine as we know it today, and therefore he’s opposed to transit. Oh, probably also Travel, and Buses, and industry. Also Mom, Apple Pie, Jesus and Santa and you personally. Against all of it.

  27. Duros62 says:

I read that as “completely eliminating the internal combustion engine” in favor of something else, more efficient and better. Do you really…really think Al Gore wants to take your car away?

    Really? Cripes, man. settle down.

  28. Zython says:

Cut Dugger some slack, he probably doesn’t know what “internal combustion” even means.

  29. Bill L. says:

What’s more American than cars, right? Like Rex said, mom, apple pie, and Jesus..or Chevy, take your pick. I’m sure many Chevys have a plastic Jesus on the dash. It’s a two-fer! Lefties hate America, so they want to ban cars AND dashboard Jesus (secular bastards!), not improve the quality of life for everyone and possibly everything across the entire globe through the progressive infusion of far cleaner and more efficient technologies that would not only help clean our air, reduce CO2, create new industries to replace or possibly re-invigorate Detroit, drastically reduce the need for oil and gas, and more…whew…

No, it’s the express train to Luddite-ania, all aboard. Damn commie hippies.

Science has clearly gotten it wrong, the Neanderthals have not, in fact, died out.

That, or the U.S. needs to start looking for a continental gas leak.

  30. Jay Alt says:

Good work Oliver. Here is a link to a recent work which had global warming confusionists all excited. I call it a ‘work’ not an article, since it wasn’t a peer-reviewed. It fact, it wasn’t an article either. It was a poster by Dr. Abdussamatov from a conference! Wow, with one whole equation!
