U.S. Attorney Scandal: The Lies Keep On Coming

These subpoenas are going to be fun.

One of the U.S. attorneys fired by the Bush administration after Republican complaints that he neglected to prosecute voter fraud had been heralded for his expertise in that area by the Justice Department, which twice selected him to train other federal prosecutors to pursue election crimes.

David C. Iglesias, who was dismissed as U.S. attorney for New Mexico in December, was one of two chief federal prosecutors invited to teach at a “voting integrity symposium” in October 2005. The symposium was sponsored by Justice’s public integrity and civil rights sections and was attended by more than 100 prosecutors from around the country, according to an account by Iglesias that a department spokesman confirmed.

Also, looks like someone at the CIA was getting their butt covered:

Fired San Diego U.S. attorney Carol Lam notified the Justice Department that she intended to execute search warrants on a high-ranking CIA official as part of a corruption probe the day before a Justice Department official sent an e-mail that said Lam needed to be fired, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Sunday.

What were the real reasons why these people were fired? Why has the administration and the DOJ kept lying about those reasons? What was Mr. Rove’s role? Mr. Cheney? President Bush? What did the involved parties know, which among them lied under oath, and who asked them to? If the administration chooses to exert executive privilege - what are they hiding?

Questions swirl.

Bill Maher was on Larry King tonight. He was quoting but couldn’t remember who when he said, “Republicans always say that government is ineffective and when they get elected they prove it.”

And in order to help explain the “importance” of this manufactured scandal to the great unwashed masses, today the New York Times helpfully declares:

There is no evidence of rampant voter fraud in this country. Rather, Republicans under Mr. Bush have used such allegations as an excuse to suppress the votes of Democratic-leaning groups…

Well, at least it is helpful to finally have the Old Grey Lady admit how much Democrats were lying about Diebold and Ohio and Florida … or maybe this whole “scandal” is a sloppy attempt to justify the complete absence of “voter fraud” charges when the Democrats won enough elections to regain control of Congress this past fall. Suspicious? Nah …

Maybe you can tell us how much of a “scandal” it is when Gonzales resigns, Mike.
