Sam Brownback, senator and Republican presidential candidate admits what other Republicans will only say behind closed doors.
General Pace’s recent remarks do not deserve the criticism they have received. In fact, we applaud General Pace for maintaining a personal commitment to moral principles. He has demonstrated great leadership during a very difficult time and he continues to do so today.
Compare to the Democrats.
“I do not agree with General Pace that homosexuality is immoral. Attempts to divide people like this have consumed too much of our politics over the past six years.”
Well I’ve heard from a number of my friends and I’ve certainly clarified with them any misunderstanding that anyone had, because I disagree with General Pace completely. I do not think homosexuality is immoral.
Sam Brownback, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and the rest: they speak for the right. They are their spokespeople, their gods.
Of course Hillary had to confer with her advisers and campaign people before she made her statement. Because like most Democrats, she’s a coward when it comes to gay rights.
Lots of talk, but little action.
And you know what? I’ll bet lots of money that a President Obama or another President Clinton won’t do SHIT to advance gay rights.
So pat yourself on the back all you want Oliver. The Democrats record on gay rights doesn’t match their rhetoric.
Yes, because you ought to be proud of being part of the party and movement who wants to send gays to the back of the bus. If HRC and Obama simply keep the status quo, they’ll be ahead of the GOP.
You know what? I actually have a weird respect for Brownback for being honest. Bigoted and fuckheaded, but honest.
I agree that Democrats are historically shy about advancing gay rights.
But who do they have to fear on this issue? Who’s going to make their political life very uncomfortable if they dare say “gay Americans are the equal of straight Americans, and deserve the same right to pursue happiness and prosperity without fear of persecution.”
If you answered “the right-wing Moral Screech Brigade,” $100 and control of the board.
And you know what? I’ll bet lots of money that a President Obama or another President Clinton won’t do SHIT to advance gay rights.
After the promises of the 1992 campaign, I’m in agreement with you for once, Jay. I wouldn’t bet LOTS of money, but I’d put even odds on it. I can still remember Clinton’s backtracking on gays in the military in early 1993, and I was pissed then too.
OTOH, neither Obama nor Clinton will do anything to oppose gay rights. I’d even figure that Giuliani, easily the Republican most friendly to gay rights, would need to appease the right-wing Moral Screech Brigade, especially because he has been gay-friendly.
I don’t blame Brownback for being a gloomy. He’s probably been the butt of many gay jokes over the course of his life.
Please. I hate it when the left mischaracterizes the words of conservatives. They do it constantly.
To learn the truth, check out Anatomy of a Smear and Picking Up the Pace over at Blogs 4 Brownback. We track the latest Brownback buzz!
We track the latest Brownback buzz!
You do not need to track what is going nowhere.
I checked out the first piece. Your homosexuals/homosexual acts division brings to mind Bill Gates trying to ask the meaning of “is.” In the process of claiming the left is “mischaracterizing,” you mischaracterize your boss’s words.
Can I just say:
If Sen. Brownback wants to go around whipping the base into a frothy frenzy of hate and fear about The Gay, maybe he shouldn’t do so wearing a tie that looks like it should be hanging from a streetlight in the Castro.
How are we mischaracterizing anything? Brownback more or less directly said Gayz Is Rong.
If Sen. Brownback didn’t say what it was asserted he said, that matters to people concerned with the truth of things (i.e., not lefties).
Let’s not misconstrue anything the man says, then. Both he and Pace are opposed to “homosexual acts,” which they consider “immoral.” Somehow this viewpoint is exclusive, and does not in any way imply that they think homosexuals are “immoral” beings–they just have “immoral” thoughts and “immoral” urges that cause them to do “immoral” things.
But they love you gay people! They just wish you weren’t so, well, GAY is all.
DLG: Small point of information: It was not the “evil” Bill Gates who lectured America on the meaning of “is”, it was the “wonderful” Bill Clinton.
I agree with something that Jay said?!? This should go on raptureready.com. The endtimes are near!
Frank’s right; that’s why every time the current administration parses its rhetoric as such, it’s referred to as Clintonian.
(Of course, I recall that the current administration was trying not to be as such.)
Frank’s right
Ah, yesss…
Now who’s cherry-picking?
Frank’s right … I recall…
Frank’s right about NOTHING IMPORTANT.
NG: You’re a prig AND a twit.
Frank’s right. You’re a prig and a twit. He’s right about Sam Brownback too. I think you should all listen to Frank. He’s always right, and it’s easier than thinking.
I think you should all listen to Frank. He’s always right…
I love the direction of this thread.
Are you just not noticing the sarcasm or are you making a joke about selective quoting?
Well, gee, Nimrod Gently, you’re going to have to solve that mystery on your own.
Are you gay?
Take this test
Sometimes, all this kerfuffle reminds me of reading things by Hilaire Belloc (and, to a lesser extent, G.K. Chesterton) about Jews. To someone born in the second half of the XX Century, it takes me by surprise to read otherwise thoughtful, sensible and funny people (see above) writing what to my sensibilities are the most heinous and appalling things about Jews and Judaism. For obvious reasons, ‘genteel’ anti-Semitism is now a non sequitur. Around 1900, in cultured English circles, it was almost de rigeur.
I look forward to my sons telling _their_ sons some variation of ‘in fact, when Grandad and Pop adopted us, they actually _couldn’t_ legally get married – and it was years until they could get married in California.’ And the grandkids will say whatever version of ‘nuhUH!’ is fashionable at the time.
And Frank’s opinions on things will be as relevant as Westbrook Pegler.
Let me see if I’ve got this right:
Who hates The Gay? Republicans and Achmedinajad. (Of course Republicans really like The Gay if The Gay is rich, powerful, active in politics, or can win votes.)
Who wants to shove their religion down your throat — Republicans and Achmedinajad. (… Congress shall make no respecting an …)
Who has hatred and distrust of everyone outside their religion — Republicans and Achmedinajad.
Who is developing weapons of mass destruction to secure their country — Iran. (America already has more weapons of mass destruction than the rest of the planet combined.) Who is planning to modernize the largest nuclear weapons inventory on the planet? America!
Who sold weapons of mass destruction to Iraq? America! (Under Reagan and Bush I.)
Who used the WMDs they sold Iraq as justification for a war — The Republican administration!
Why does Iran hate us? Because we overthrew their government in 1953. How long will they hate us? How long have the decendents of Mohammed hated each other?
Like John Dean says, when people on the right today say the pledge of allegiance, they clearly believe that “with liberty and justice for ALL” doesn’t apply to gays, muslims, Arabs, non-Christians, or anyone else who doesn’t believe what they believe.
Today’s Republicans are NOT conservatives.
Why are we in Iraq? To pump a trillion dollars into the economy — it doesn’t matter to them how many Americans die — a strong economy is worth any quantity of death and suffering.
Result of being in Iraq: A million dead human beings.
So… Your God sanctions the murder of a million human beings created in his own image…
My God does not!
