Dead Gonzo Walking?

Sure, he’s one of the few northeastern Republicans left, but a Republican nonetheless.

Sen. John Sununu of New Hampshire on Wednesday became the first Republican in Congress to call for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ dismissal, hours after President Bush expressed confidence in his embattled Cabinet officer.

“I think the president should replace him,” Sununu said in an interview with The Associated Press.

  1. From the way you’re talking, I’m putting Oliver down for C.

    When will Gonzalez resign?

    A) Never: Midderpidge

    B) Before the end of the Bush presidency: Duros, Rheinhard, Nimrod

    C) Before Friday at 5: Dr. AGH, Oliver

    D) Don’t know: Jay

VRWC, Frank, and Pedro are curiously silent, I see. Presumably they’re off with Jay contemplating how deep this media conspiracy goes.

  2. Jadegold says:

    Smart move by Sununu.

He’s got a tough race in 2008 and he knows showing a little independence from Young Master Bush will help.

  3. jimmmm says:

    Jadegold:

    DingDingDingDing.

    Right!

Sununu’s gotta act indignant about Republican authoritarianism, lest he lose what little traction he has in a blue-leaning Libertarian state.

  4. Wellstone says:

    Smart little Sununu.

Put me down for Friday, but at 7pm.

  5. Wilbur says:

O golly, it’s not just snowbird republicans like Sununu now:

Even Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), the administration’s most faithful legislator, said “the appearances are troubling” for Gonzales. “I’m concerned,” Cornyn said…The best Cornyn could offer Gonzales: “In Texas, we believe in having a fair trial and then we have the hanging.

Is it too late to change my vote to “sometime tomorrow”?

  6. Diamond LeGrande says:

I’m always skeptical that one of the gang will resign in disgrace. I’m still pretty sure Rummy only went because Junior owed Senior a political favor, and replaced the man whom Poppy hated with Bobby Gates, who currently has his picture on Barbara’s desk, with Junior’s hidden away somewhere.

  7. We at Huskanoy & Giuliani LLP aim to please, Wilbur! Here’s an updated tally:

    When will Gonzalez resign?

    A) Never: Midderpidge

    B) Before the end of the Bush presidency: Duros, Rheinhard, Nimrod, Wellstone

    C) Before Friday at 5: Dr. AGH, Oliver, Wilbur, Lib4

    D) Don’t know: Jay, Beans

    E) Cowering in fear: every con on the site (except Jay)

  8. Beans says:

I resent you saying that Frank is cowering in fear. Does
    This
really look like a man who knows fear?

  9. merlallen says:

How long has that old fuck been in school, 65 years?

  10. Wilbur says:

Come on guys, lay into Frank all you want on his political views, but stay the fuck out of his personal life. They might not have standards but we do. Show some class for chrissakes.

  11. midderpidge says:

Aren’t there other scandals happening right now. Something about Bush cronies installing faulty pumps in NOLA or something? FBI illegally spying on people (or did Gonzalez stepping up to the plate and giving them a blanket “i take responsibility while having nothing to do with it” pardon end it)? How’s that surge coming? We are now safe from Khalid SheikhRon Jeremohamed or something now, too.

  12. “Khalid SheikhRon Jeremohamed”

Wow. If the site still supported icons, I would change my username to that TODAY!

Anyway, here’s an update. I feel less confident about C today than I did yesterday. But who knows what today will bring?

    When will Gonzalez resign?

    A) Never: Midderpidge

    B) After Friday but before the end of the Bush presidency: Duros, Rheinhard, Nimrod, Wellstone, the mysterious S, Bill L.

    C) Before Friday at 5: Dr. AGH, Oliver, Wilbur, Lib4

    D) Don’t know: Jay, Beans, Diamond LeGrande

    E) Cowering in fear: every con on the site (except Jay)

  13. SpiderJ says:

I’m going to cast a vote for B.

I want to start a separate pool to see how long it takes before the usual noisy babies start calling Sununu and Cornyn RINOs, but it’s hard to base such pools on a matter of hours.

  14. fd10801 says:

I always get a kick out of how liberals take such stock in Republicans’ agreeing with them, as if that vindicates their nonsense.

I wonder how you feel about Cornyn’s assessment of the Iraq war, or Sununu’s opinion of the tax cuts.

Oh, and Wilbur, thanks, but you’re wasting your time. As for “having standards”, perhaps you can recall the last time a conservative commenter on this blog, went and found websites with another commenter’s picture, or made comments about how long they’ve been in school (two and a half years, by the way, I’m a little behind in a three year program, if it’s any of your business).

  15. SpiderJ says:

I always get a kick out of how liberals take such stock in Republicans’ agreeing with them, as if that vindicates their nonsense.

Right, because conservatives are so far above such tactics that they made ZELL MILLER a keynote speaker at the 2004 Convention.

  16. Duros62 says:

    Thanks for that, Dr. G-H

  17. SpiderJ says:

The first para is a quote from Frank. Stupid broken tagging.

  18. Duros62 says:

I always get a kick out of how liberals take such stock in Republicans’ agreeing with them, as if that vindicates their nonsense.

It’s called bipartisanship. And it’s about time somebody on the R side used it. Besides Joe Lieberman, I mean.

  19. Beans says:

    I agree with Frank 100%.

  20. fd10801 says:

duros: It may be bipartanship when Republicans agree with Democrats, but it’s betrayal when Democrats agree with Republicans. Not to mention the fact that Dems are always surprised that Reps agree with them, because they (the Dems) are monolithic.

  21. SpiderJ says:

Sure, Frank, because it was Democrats who first came up with the term “Republicans In Name Only” for anybody who strays too far from the light of Glorious Leader.

  22. fd10801 says:

The term “RINO” was coined before G.W. Bush was even running for President:

RINO (RY.noh) n. A member of the Republican party who is viewed as being too liberal. Also: rino.

    Earliest Citation:
Bill Clinton would have been proud of what was happening on the third-floor Senate corner at the State House this week.

The Republicans were moving out and the Democrats and “RINOs” (Republicans In Name Only) were moving in.
—John DiStaso, “Merrill Taps Scamman, Strome and a Thomson,” The Union Leader (Manchester, NH), December 31, 1992

The Democrats don’t need such a term, because they vote in lockstep.

  23. SpiderJ says:

Me understand now. Me am in Frank’s Bizarro World.

  24. fd10801 says:

SpiderJ, MerlAllen and Beans: It has long been the tendency of the ignorant to mock what they do not understand.

  25. locus says:

    Doc,
I posted my vote in another thread, but put me down for C. However, I don’t think it’s going to the wire. It’s fast paced, but slow enough to happen next week and not by 5pm tomorrow.

  26. SpiderJ says:

Frank: It has long been the tendency of the uninformed to make up epigraphs, to hide their essential lack of substance.

  27. SpiderJ says:

    Bollocks. “Epigram,” not “epigraph.”

  28. Seriously, why won’t the conservatives say they don’t think Gonzalez will resign? If it’s so obvious that the controversy’s fake, then why would he resign? Have some courage, con-men! Victor Davis Hanson would be ashamed!

    For the record:

    A) Never: Midderpidge

    B) After Friday but before the end of the Bush presidency: Duros, Rheinhard, Nimrod, Wellstone, the mysterious S, Bill L., SpiderJ, Locus

    C) Before Friday at 5: Dr. AGH, Oliver, Wilbur, Lib4

    D) Don’t know: Jay, Beans, Diamond LeGrande

    E) Cowering in fear: Frank, Dugger, Pedro

  29. Duros62 says:

Doc. G, is there a prize involved?

  30. SpiderJ says:

What, Duros, the resignation wouldn’t be enough for you?

    =/

  31. fd10801 says:

    Bollocks. “Epigram,” not “epigraph.”
    Witless, not witty.

Not that it really matters, but Gonzalez will not resign.

    OK?

  32. Duros62 says:

What, Duros, the resignation wouldn’t be enough for you?

    Well… yeah, it’s a start.

  33. Duros: the prize is a link to the greatest music video of recent years: Miguelito’s Ponle El Boom Boom.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeAkaR9JKGA

    Now everyone’s a winner!

    A) Never: Midderpidge, Frank!!!

    B) After Friday but before the end of the Bush presidency: Duros, Rheinhard, Nimrod, Wellstone, the mysterious S, Bill L., SpiderJ, Locus

    C) Before Friday at 5: Dr. AGH, Oliver, Wilbur, Lib4

    D) Don’t know: Jay, Beans, Diamond LeGrande

    E) Cowering in fear: Dugger, Pedro, Alberto Gonzalez

  34. Beans says:

Can you change my answer to Never? I, as always, agree with Frank.

  35. Duros62 says:

Aww, he’s so cute! I just wanna make a sammich outta him!

So, it’s gonna be like that, huh?

    Take that!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRh-Vg0RNDQ

  36. Duros62 says:

Who is that dancing in the video? His mom and his sister?

  37. YESS!!!! ANOTHER LIE DOCUMENTED!!! Friday at 5 is looking AWESOME!!!

    http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=2954988&page=1

“The e-mails also show Attorney General Alberto Gonzales discussed the idea of firing the attorneys en masse while he was still White House counsel — weeks before he was confirmed as attorney general.”

Duros: I don’t actually know much about Miguelito, I just like his flow. Also, sad to see that the mere mention of Jesse Jackson brings out the vicious youtube commenters.

  38. fd10801 says:

Yes, Doctor A G-H, Jesse Jackson is no bastard…

  39. Duros62 says:

Eh, I don’t generally read the comments on youtube. I just thought it flowed with the whole “shaft” thing we had going.

  40. Wilbur says:

Oh, and Wilbur, thanks, but you’re wasting your time.

    I got yer back, Frank.

But while I’m back there, up yours for turning my defense of you into a slam against teh librulz!

  41. fd10801 says:

Wilbur; I can’t help it if you’re on the wrong side. You made your bed, etc.

  42. Duros62 says:

Well, you’ve got the TV angle to consider…

  43. midderpidge says:

    It will not happen.

Look at it logically. WHo can Bush replace Gonzales with? The odds of him getting another crony through is slight. With all the potential for investigations on many fronts, an independent would never be acceptable to Bush & Co.

If Gonzales resigns, there will not be an AG for the balance of Bush’s term.

  44. SpiderJ says:

Michael “Heckuva Job” Brown has a law degree from U of Oklahoma. I’d say that reaches the minimal qualification.

  45. 5:25 — looks like we Cs jumped the gun. I hereby adjust my prediction to “before April 1.”

Although Midderpidge’s analysis is fairly compelling. I point out it’s similar to reasons we heard why Bush wouldn’t fire Rumsfeld, though, and we know how that ended.

    Tally:

    A) Never: Midderpidge, Beans, Frank

    B) After Friday but before the end of the Bush presidency: Duros, Rheinhard, Nimrod, Wellstone, the mysterious S, Bill L., SpiderJ, Locus

    C) Before Friday at 5: Dr. AGH, Oliver, Wilbur, Lib4

    D) Don’t know: Jay, Diamond LeGrande

    E) Cowering in fear: Dugger, Pedro, Alberto Gonzalez

  46. Duros62 says:

never thought I’d see Midder and Frank in agreement about anything.
