Wow, I know it’s late, way late, but I just moved to NYC from Iowa. I was hoping to get a ferret, as they are ideal for apartment life, but then I found out they were banned.

Aside from this being rediculous, why would Rudy insult one of his constituents, one of the people he is supposed to protect and serve? I’m so glad he got nowhere in the Presidential race. It’s odd that Reps say they love individual freedom, the free-market, etc., while at the same time dictate what religion, what pets, and which businesses receive government subsidies (not even classical economics, that). Goodbye GOP, don’t let the door hit you on the way out, or better yet, do. You deserve it.

To say that the caller ‘needs a life’ for his ferret advocating is silly. It’s no different than advocating for women’s rights, gay rights, peace on earth or whatever. He’s trying to educate the uneducated. Unfortunately for many people in NY City, one of those uneducated people was Mayor and had the power to ban an entire species of animal that has been domesticated for over 2000 years. They pose no threat to the ecosystem — ferrets can not survive in the wild. They have no natural hunting instincts, and will dehydrate quickly. They have a quick digestive system and need water and food available at all times, which they do not have outside a home. They are completely dependant on their human owners. On top of that there are no known cases of ferrets transmitting rabies. Ferrets cannot maul children like dogs, and don’t run around in the streets like cats.

Thank-god I live in Canada and there are no right-wing weirdo’s that can tell me what domesticated animals I’m allowed to own.

I think former mayor rudy guiliani should pick his battles.
Ferrets are cute and smart what ecosystem in NYC is he worried about.
For years the city dumped sewage and garbage in the hudson. If i was mayor and outlawed the new york yankees people would be calling me pissed off too. I hate baseball but I don’t think people who enjoy it should have a law made taking it away from them.

I think the important thing is that he didn’t even touch on the logic or the legality of the rule. He simply insults and denigrates the caller. It’s a power play, which is the story of this man’s life.

The reason for the radio show (which I assume is taxpayer funded) should be for the Mayor to explain and discuss city policies, not insult people who disagree with him.

This man is absolutely unqualified to be President of a free republic, based on the consent of the governed. He would do well leading a political system where his word is law and nobody could question him, namely a monarchy or dictatorship.

While I don’t believe the ferret activist was totally in the right, It’s really disconcerting to see Rudy going way overboard on his remarks.
As both AJ and Brian Miller said in previous comments, this man really thinks that if you disagree with him you really must have some sort of mental issue. Thats not a good trait to see in the presidetial canidate…If he can’t handle someone questioning his attority about ferrets, just what is he going to be like if Gods forbid, he makes it to the white house. Just because he doesn’t agree with the man, there is no reason to declare him metally unstable. Dipomacy wasn’t even in sight here. Yes, it is his show but there really isn’t a point to a talk show like that if he only wants to hear from happy content people. I thought the point was to give people a stage to talk about issues. While ferrets might not be the most important issue in the world, who’s going to argue what is. Everyone has something important to them, and for this guy, its ferrets. Rudy really should have shown him more respect than he did.

As to the person who think ferrets will multiply if left in the wild…who gave you that information?? I swear, I really don’t understand people who base their opinions on no facts whatsoever…Seriously, you need to do some reading on ferrets before you rant. Almost all ferrets are bred in farms like Marshall and are spayed and nutered before they even get to the pet store. They are fed on ferret chow/kitten chow and that is what is imprinted in them as what “food” is. They really don’t have the skills to hunt, and unless they find some kibble under a bush, they’re likly to die if left to their own devises for more than a few days. The only known wild ferrets in the USA are the blackfooted ferrets which are accually endangered, not thriving on their own. They accually have people watching them and trying to get their numbers up. Anyway, just wanted to put in my two cents.

alright, I went here because Tucker Carlson made a comment on his am show on MSNBC. Not everyone has to like you to be an effective leader, this was funny. Kind of reminded me of Dwight Eisenhower and how he could shut a press writer down in. Probably why Tucker is anti-Rudy. Peace, I’m out.

As a ferret-obsessed New Yorker who lived through 8 yrs of Guiliani, I can tell you why ferrets were made illegal and why Guiliani hates them:
1. His head of Board of Health was getting bad PR after an animal advocate exposed deplorable conditions in city animal shelters. The advocate happened to be a ferret lover. Ferrets were made an example of what will happen if you say anything that reflects badly on “America’s Mayor.”
2. He’s a control freak and ferrets are free spirits.
3. He’d rather put a dress on and play with his gerbils–they’re much more controllable and can fit in smaller places.
I think we should keep him talking about ferrets just to see how knowledgeable and level-headed he’d be as president. And while we’re at it, let’s get his position on gerbils.

I end with a quote from my cable guy: “Those guys [ferrets] are illegal? They should make the rats illegal!”
