It doesn’t really matter to me, but for the religious right who get the heebie jeebies about Mormonism, Mitt Romney having polygamy in his family tree can’t help.
Sigh,
So I am not sure why I read on liberal blogs so much about Romney’s mormonism.
I understand our claim is that “we” are okay with it, but the Christofascists won’t be.
But I would rather let Giuiliani or McCain’s campaign air this crap than see it aired first at Huffpo.
Either we should seek to call Mormonism a cult and outlaw it, or we should not care what Romney’s great grandfather was doing or who he was doing it with.
I am content to believe that when the race comes down to McCain vs. Romney, that McCain’s campaign organization will smear Romney with this charge just as they smeared McCain himself for being homosexual and having an insane drug addicted wife and a black baby.
Please stick to Romney’s relevant flaws: his enormous flip-flops and his secretive alliance with Kryptonite Mines and General Zod.
First off, it’s an AP story. Second of all, the MSM devotes pounds of newsprints to the most intimate details of the Clinton’s marriage, Obama’s upbringing, and Edwards’ house. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
Plus it’s teh funny.
So it’s wrong to discuss the intimate details of the Clinton’s marriage but that just points out how much weaker this issue is. I mean, as wrong as it is, at least it’s a question of the Clinton’s and not their great grandfather’s marriage.
I don’t think we should bash atheist pols for not believing in god. I don’t think we should bash Catholic pols for taking all their orders from the Pope. (I do think we can bash pols that say we need to take more of our orders from the Pope.) I don’t think we should bash Muslim pols because they take their oaths on the Koran. I don’t think we should bash Jewish pols because they use Christian blood in their matzoh. I don’t think we should bash Hillary or Condi because once a month they are going to be dangerous.
Come on Oliver, Media Matters!!!? Please?
Multiple choice Mittens. Runs in the family?
jerry: Some of the cons around here will not get the humor in your joke.
Romney is irrelevant. One failed as governor of Massachusets does not fuel a presidential run. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: we need to worry about St. Rudy. These right-wing nutcases will drop their abortion objection if they they see him bringing them power. That’s all they understand.
It says something about the personal integrity of Governor Romney that his detractors have to scour back 3 generations to literally dig up a skeleton in a closet… since his closet is pretty darn clean.
see here
Mrs. Romney pointed out that of the three Repub leading candidates, her husband’s the only one who has had only 1 wife– Guiliani and McCain practice polygamy, only serially.
I’ve got nothing against Romney, other than his stand on the issues. I’m even beginning to get annoyed at this anti-Mormonism. George S on This Week questioned him about his faith like, you know, Mormonism is the only denomination to have not-quite-rational beliefs, like standard-issue Christianity doesn’t have what I the agnostic think is sort of weird– angels and heaven and miracles and all that.
If nothing else, reaction to his Mormonism is exposing the anti-any-religion-but-mine attitude of so many Christians.
OW would be having seizures if the AP published negative information about a Democratic candidate’s ancestors 3-4 generations ago.
This is disgusting no matter who the candidate is.
The articles about Clinton, Obama, and Edwards are all about Clinton, Obama, and Edwards. Funny how that works…huh?
JWG, you simply have to adjust your reality to fit the perceptions of our host.
Fair: Makes those he dislikes look bad.
Unfair: Makes those he likes look bad.
Just keep in mind one simple fact: Oliver is not an analyst, but an advocate; a partisan, not a pundit.
He’s a hack.
That explains why Rush Limbaugh is a monster for mocking Chelsea Clinton, but the Bush twins are fair game.
He’s also fortunate that his employer shares the very same rabid stance. It explains why he does so much blogging during business hours, and why he links to their works on a fairly consistent basis.
Me, I value my independence. My employer is only the most vaguely aware of my blogging, and I like it. That should address any questions about my independence.
But then again, Oliver is a shill for the party of “interdependence” and “codependence.”
But back to the issue at hand… does that mean we can once again hold Robert Byrd culpable for his Ku Klux Klan past? Ted Kennedy for his cheating at Harvard, Chappaquiddick, and drunken whoremongering?
Nah, we’ll go after Ted for his father’s sucking up to Nazis and bootlegging booze. That’s a better parallel.
