Another NFL Question

I think it’s general consensus that Ladanian Tomlinson is the best Running Back in the NFL, and in my opinion Peyton Manning is the best QB. But who do you think is the best wide receiver? It isn’t Terrell Owens or Keyshawn Johnson, both loudmouthed underachievers nor is it Washington’s Santana Moss (though I think he’s in the top 5 or 6). Is it Chad Johnson? Or maybe Marvin Harrison or somebody else?

And by “best” I don’t mean who had the most gaudy numbers, but who is that clutch Jerry Rice-type player who’s going to make the big catch just when you need it?

what’s clear is there is no DOMINANT WR in the league right now. If you asked his question 365 days ago, you’d get a lot of responses for Steve Smith. No one would make that argument now.

You can make the case for Ocho Cinco and Harrison, just as you can make the case that they’re not even the best WRs and their own teams (Houshmanzadeh and Wayne, respectively).

T.O.? Maybe three years ago, when he had that one great season with Philly. But he’s not the same now (too many drops this year) and there’s the clubhouse cancer factor to consider.

Randy Moss has fallen so far off the map that he’s become the NFL version of Penny Hardaway.

I like Anquan Boldin (because I’m an FSU guy)….but he’s top 7 at best.

Steve Smith has to get some votes here. Despite playing on a team with a shaky QB and a crap running game, he can single-handedly carry his team.

Chad Johnson is another good option. Harrison, despite being much older than most receivers in their prime, is certainly still great, though he has a habit of disappearing in big games.

Consistent over time, dependable, makes the big play when needed, nice numbers, a team guy and Favre’s favorite receiver for years: Donald Driver; Packers.

So, by “best” you don’t mean most productive? Is Peyton “I gave to Bob Corker” Manning really the best by the standard you’re applying to wide receivers?

By your standard I’m going to go with Donald Driver.

When healthy, it is clearly Steve Smith. This past year he was not healthy so he did not dominate.

2006-2007 was an off year for fantasy football wide receivers. From that perspective it was Owens because of him leading in the TD parade. Of course different scoring formats might have someone else as the leading point earner. One thing is certain, paying attention to off the field antics would stand in the way of any successful fantasy team. Owens was the first pick in our draft in a 2 keeper league and the owner was rewarded with a trip to the Fantasy Bowl.

My sentimental favorite and arguably the most consistent over the last 6 years is Marvin Harrison. Being a former Harrison owner and a Syracuse resident I’ve followed his career rather closely. He’s been a quiet top level performaer for a long time now. It’s the attention he gest that opens up things for a Wayne or a Stokely, which shouldn’t be overlooked when looking at the importance any player makes to a team.

I had Torry Holt who helped lead me to a Fantasy Bowl victory, even though I think Smith, Owens and Harrison are better, he is pretty good too.

One last thing, as a Driver owner he is definitely a second or third tier receivers. In FF we put players in brackets, and Driver is not in the elite group. Besides where was Driver when Walker was healthy in GB? Actually Walker may be the next top dog if Cutler turns into a Brees.

As much as I like Marvin Harrison, he’s had a reputation of being pretty quiet in the playoffs. This year is no exception.

Based upon your criteria (and I’m no Steelers fan) I would go with Hines Ward. His career YPC is 12.4, but in the playoffs it is 13.3 and he has 8 touchdowns in 10 playoff games. Even in the loss to New England in 2004, he had 5 catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. He’s clutch and he’s a leader. A great combination.

Harrison, Ward, Ocho Cinco, Driver, Smith…all good choices, but all reflect the truth about greatness at WR: you’ve gotta have a great QB throwing you the ball. Harrison has Manning. Ward has Roethlisberger. Johnson has Palmer. Driver has Favre. Smith has Delhomme. And going back through history, you can’t talk about the great WRs without talking about their QB’s: Swann and Stallworth had Bradshaw; Irvin had Aikman; Rice had Montana and Young. To some extent, they feed off each other. Would Montana have been considered as good if he didn’t have Rice to throw to?

So it’s kind of chicken-and-egg. I think it’s hard right now not to talk about Reggie Wayne, since he seems to have supplanted Harrison as Manning’s possession guy (but you have to wonder if that’s due to double-teams on Harrison).

  8. liberalrob says:

Incidentally, the guy I think of most fitting this type was Rod Smith. He never seemed to be that big-play guy, though he was capable of breaking them long; he just always seemed to catch the ball and move the chains. And he had Elway throwing to him. :)

    Also, Art Monk.

    Chum:

If fantasy football were real football, your comments would be spot on.

But ODub didn’t ask “who’s in the top group in brackets in your fantasy rankings, I’m not talking about the people with the most gaudy numbers…”

So, I’m still going with Donald Driver.

  11. Dugger says:

    Steve Smith, hands down.

  12. St Wendeler says:

Torry Holt or Isaac Bruce of the Rams would be in the running.

  13. Jet says:

I’d say Donald Driver as well. He’s not flashy, but he’s consistant, and he and Favre have that all important chemistry.
