I am a pet owner who would risk life and limb if my dog needed me to. But other than his ability at fighting terrorists, there’s no reason C.K. will be written up in the NY Times op-ed. We’ve got a war going on, and numerous other issues of import and the idea that so much ink is being spilt over a horse just kind of appals me.
Hey, every story written about Barbaro is one less story written about Britney Spears’ cooter.
Won’t someone think of the children?
Apparently what should be in the news is how these sorts of injuries are much more prevalent in the US than in Britain because we run our horses at too early an age. It’s animal abuse. (At least that’s the view of a couple of horse trainers and instructors I know.)
Actually, the injuries are more prevalent because of the number of thoroughbred horses that run in this country. Thoroughbred horses run. That is what they are born to do and it is what they want to do. The ratio between horses that have to be put down vs. those that retire to stud healthy isn’t even worth looking at.
Having worked with thoroughbred horses and their trainers, I can say that there is no way what they do is abuse. These horses are given the best of care.
And Oliver, CK isn’t a Kentucky Derby winner. Barbaro was. The Kentucky Derby is the most prestigious horse race in all the world. That’s why his death was news.
During the depression, there was Seabiscuit. During the seventies, there was Secretariat.
For some reason, it’s important to a lot of folks.
Barbaro’s fall will keep me from ever watching or betting on a horse race again.
Barbaro’s story was heroic. He was a noble thoroughbred and a marvelous example of equine flesh.
Maybe we do have a war going on, but the truth about it is hard to find in print. and the media’s other pre-occupation – filling the news with stupid movie stars – sucks.
RIP, Barbaro.
CK isn’t a Kentucky Derby winner

There are a lot of horse-lovers in this country, which shouldn’t be surprising, and Barbaro’s struggle for survival (or more accurately his owners’ struggle to save him) means a lot to them. As far as I know, standard procedure in the past is to immediately put down (let’s be blunt, kill) a horse that suffers an injury like this. The fact that heroic measures were undertaken to save the life of an animal, whether motivated by the owner’s greed for stud fees or simple humane treatment of a wounded animal, makes this a unique and compelling story.
And you don’t know for a fact that C.K. wouldn’t be written up in the Times. If he dragged a kid off the subway tracks, I bet he’d make the front page.
Think theres more to it than the horse winning a race. I mean seriously, would this happen with a dog that oh so very nearly won the Westminster dog show until due to a freak accident it got some condition or other that meant it would have to be put down? Knowing how some people fetishize their housepets I can see it getting news and maybe in DogFancier magazine they’d have an obit like this one for Barbaro, but would you ever actually see an article humanizing a dog and mourning its passing as a kind of national tragedy, waxing philosophical on the “tragic death” of a dog “pure of heart?”
Captian Fluffles, the Lahsa Alpsa who won for best of breed and may very nearly have taken best in show if not for a shocking and mortally horrifying injury sustained in the final exposition lap around the auditorium before judging, the dog whose heroic story captivated a nation almost as much as its brutal, tragic and soul-wrenching conclusion, was put down in a veterinery hospital today. He lived a full and rich life, with no particular regrets, and like all dogs had a soul pure of the evils of the world, so common in competitive dog-showing, and to have been struck down so brutally in the prime of his life by the bitter whims of fate surely serves as a lesson to us all about the fleeting grasp we have upon our own mortal coil, and what it means to be truly alive. Captain Fluffles is survived by his bitch and their litter, shown in this photograph weeping at the funeral for the hero of the nation, with a crowd of mourners. Rest in everlasting peace Captain Fluffles, the world is a richer place for having had you in our hearts and mind, and a cruelly emptier one with your passing.

I have been surprised at the affection my sister and her daughter shares with their horse. It isn’t just the adolescent girl thing, and the horse reciperocates. After I took care of him for a while in their absence, he came to treat me much the same way as my Lab does, fortunately without trying to be a lap dog.
