Sorry for obsessing, but in my post above, change “on a regular schedule” to “on a schedule not of your choosing”. I was thinking of newspaper opinion journalists, who do write on a fixed schedule. The important thing being, they don’t get to choose when to opine.

I disagree, Jay. What he’s saying is that he just doesn’t like her. It’s not defensible, but I don’t think it’s about gay marriage. He’s still a joke, though. As far as I’m concerned, publishing and defending The Bell Curve amply demonstrates his gigantic intellectual and moral blind spots, and that was, what, over 10 years ago? At least he’s been good on torture.

Oliver, you’re not right. It has nothing to do with the political wind. It has to do with a politicians views on gay marriage. Hillary Clinton is opposed to gay marriage and that’s why he can’t stand her.

Andrew Sullivan is a member of that rather despicable species, the opinion journalist. Opinion journalism is making a living by writing political opinions.

Why is that bad? Well, a professional reporter writes for a living, but doesn’t put himself into his writing; a professional fiction author makes things up, not necessarily from his own life. But an opinion journalist writes about his political opinion about the world. And an opinion is a very personal thing.

If you are to deliver something that is very personal, on a regular schedule, and for money, then just like in another profession, you will have to fake it most of the time.

It’s meaningless to wonder what Sullivan’s real political opinion is, based on what he writes for a living.
