The Juggernaut Is In

Hillary ClintonHillary Clinton is officially running for president.

Clinton Announces Step Toward ’08 Bid

Six years after making history by winning a United States Senate seat as first lady, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton announced this morning that she was taking the first formal step to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, a journey that would break yet more political barriers in her extraordinary and controversial career.

As some of you may know, there is nobody – nobody – the conservative Republican base hates more than Senator Clinton. The vitriol they directed towards John Kerry in 2004 was a warm tongue bath compared to the hate they have for Clinton. So, we’re going to be keeping an eye on the loons as the campaign takes off.

UPDATE: As if illustrating my point, the kids at Newsbusters dissect the Clinton video Zapruder style in search of hidden meaning: “And check out the yellow spot in the bushes. At first I thought it was just a warm dapple of sunshine. But freeze the frame when, about 1/4 of the way through, Hillary says “how to end the deficits that threaten Social Security.” That’s not sunshine — those are flowers in bloom.”

Back, and to the left. Back, and to the left.

  1. Wow. For the most anticipated moment of the 2008 election cycle, Saturday morning seems like a weird time to do it; unless of course you really want the weekend talk cycle to kill someone else’s momentum.

    Someone’s afraid of Obama.

OMG SHOCK NEWS OF THE DECADE

  3. Benny says:

It’s more than just loons, OW. I was very much hoping she would change her mind. Well, it’s supposed to be exploratory.
I expect Fox may give her a boost since Murdoch contributed to her senate re-election bid.

  4. Nimrod Gently says:

Yeah, but you don’t actually despise her very being, do you?

  5. Benny says:

I don’t despise her very being, but she’s definitely not my choice. My concern is that with Obama and HRC the emphasis will be about them in terms of gender and race novelty, or Hillary’s case, her hybrid: Bill, who is both an asset and a liability. And there may be nothing substantive about the issues, which makes the media’s job a lot easier. They (the media) should be not let off the hook and they need ask all candidates fair questions about their stances (not just personal lives) and what they plan for the future.

But what I see from both HRC and Obama is about power, not about the job and is it the best way to serve their country, not just their egos.

  7. I essentially agree with you. That’s why we have this vetting process, especially on the Democratic side, that involves asking the candidates hard questions and makes them debate each other. But you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think there’s a healthy amount of ego and hunger for power in every single presidential candidate. It takes ego to look in the mirror and say that the person you see in the reflection is worthy to be the leader of the free world. Every president – from Washington to Bush – has had a healthy ego and thirst for power.

    Flowers in January??!?!? Proof!!!

Global warming IS a conspiracy. ;)

  9. Kurt Montandon says:

Wow, I thought you were just joking about the “flowers in the background” thing until I followed the link … but nope, it was real, and not a parody.

  10. fd10801 says:

One good thing about about a possible third Clinton administration: With Bill boinking chicks in his Harlem office and the taxpayer – subsided (how’s that for a Section 8 residence) in Chappaqua, he’ll never be screwing things up in the White House.
Give Sen. Clinton 8 years in the White House, and they’ll be profiling Republicans at the airports, while the day of the Hejira will be a national holiday.

  11. fd10801 says:

These figures could have a significant impact on the 2008 election – it depends on whether you think voters will or not change their voting habits after they move somewhere new

  12. vwcat says:

the left hates her just as much. She is a DLC, inside the beltway, corporatist fake.
She has no real beliefs and no real reason to run. She offers nothing but continuing this illegal war.
    I hope she gets crushed.

  13. Bengt Larsson says:

Are you a rightwinger, vwcat? Only rightwingers tend to talk about “the left”. If you are a rightwinger that was a pretty good fake.

  14. fd10801 says:

Actually, Bengt, he is not a rightwinger.

He may be the only liberal who is willing to acknowledge that liberals are on the left — kudos!

  15. Opposition to Sen. Clinton in the Democratic party is overstated. Just want to note that for the record.

  16. Nimrod Gently says:

Do you really, actually believe any of that, Frank?

  17. Benny05 says:

“Opposition to Sen. Clinton in the Democratic party is overstated. Just want to note that for the record.”

But bloggers on both sides are not very fond of her.

  18. fd10801 says:

N G :: No, I just she think she’s another flamin’ liberal, who couldn’t give a flying f*ck about this country (sort of like… you). She just wants to be President because she has a world class ego.

  19. Course she doesn’t. No-one to the left of Dennis Hastert could possibly care about America. The whole notion is simply absurd.

    ARE YOU COMPLETELY INSANE???

  20. fd10801 says:

N G: I am as sure of the fact that Hillary is a spoiled, feminist power – hungry leftist, as I am that you know less about American politics than the average high schooler — on either side of the Atlantic.

  21. Nimrod Gently says:

You probably should reconsider your natural bullishness then.

  23. Nimrod Gently says:

Who is that bad news for?

  24. Dugger says:

Actually, I like Hillary better than most of the other Demo candidates. Obama is too green. Edwards has no gravitas. The General has self destruted . AlGore is one -note-Johnny and damaged goods. Hillary will at least be pragmatic as far as maintaining power is concerned. If it required sacrificing Bubba for a second term or staying the course in Iraq, she’d do it in a heart beat – regardless of her beliefs.

  25. Nimrod Gently says:

You voted for George W. Bush, twice. What the hell do you care about gravitas?

  26. fd10801 says:

    N G :: Hillary, maybe?
I told you you don’t know anything about American politics..

  27. Dugger says:

“You voted for George W. Bush, twice.”

True in 2004, but only once in 2000.
