Compare & Contrast

When Howard Dean was elected Democratic chairman, the base of the party was elated and the process was generally free of bitterness and acrimony. Republicans quickly predicted electoral doom and a quick exit for Dean (Newt Gingrich, that visionary, said “I think if (Democrats) have a true death wish, he’d be the perfect guy to go with”). Of course, the Democrats won the House and the Senate under Chairman Dean and the party is well positioned to win the 2008 election.

The Republicans have just elected a new party chairman in Mel Martinez, and the base is ready to jump out a window.
