Labor’s Wal-Mart Campaign Is Working

('DiggThis’)

The work of groups like Wake Up Walmart has been derided by some, implying that in the battle between workers and a megacorp, the American people would side blindly with the megacorp. It isn’t a campaign to destroy Walmart, but to make the largest retailer act like a responsible member of the business community. The conservative elites who don’t understand real capitalism and wish to drive the costs of labor down to nothing scoff, but the campaign is having an effect. Walmart is now devoting major money to a PR campaign, this is a shift from their previous work under the radar with mostly conservative operatives (including Redstate’s Mike Krempasky) to an above-board campaign that seems to be a reaction to a horrible holiday season in Bentonville.

And the derision is deserved. It pretends to be some kind of consumer advocacy group, but it’s nothing but a union front group.

No, it’s an attempt by the unions to get their snout in Wal-Mart’s trough.

The conservative elites who don’t understand real capitalism

Actually, conservatives have a much better understanding of capitalism than liberals. You link back to your post about the minimum wage which is absurd because Wal-Mart pays above the minimum wage in fact, pays higher in most areas than the proposed increase in the minimum wage.

The efforts of groups Wake Up Walmart and liberal politicians (that are in the back pocket of the unions) is about nothing but money and control. The law in Maryland that would have forced Wal-Mart to pay a fixed percentage of payroll on employee insurance was written by the unions. The attempt by the Chicago City Council to force Wal-Mart to increase pay was also written by the unions.

Stop pretending that this is part of some honorable moral crusade. It’s a power grab.

  2. Oh no, health care and decent wages, those dastardly unions!!

Everything’s a “front group” to you, isn’t it? I bet you think Child’s Play is a front for the ACLU or some shit like that.

And those 3vil unionzorz!!1!1!11!!1!!! How DARE they do things like prevent companies from forcing them to work 170 hour work weeks and paying their workers $0.03 per hour (yes, this is somewhat hyperbole). And how DARE they fight so that workers don’t get buttfucked by their corperate masters.

Oh no, health care and decent wages, those dastardly unions!!,/i>

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

ctually, conservatives have a much better understanding of capitalism than liberals.

And yet, conservatives support decreased emission standards (which results in market failure), and expect to be able to privatize public goods.

Wal-Mart provides healthcare for their employees, and for a retailer, they pay about the average for that kind of work. Unless you think working at a cash register or stocking a shelf merits a salary of $60,000 a year or something.

Everything’s a “front group” to you, isn’t it?

No. But this organization is a union mouthpiece, nothing more.

And being affiliated with labor unions is bad… how again?

(Actually, if my guess is correct, Jay, you have some ideological issue with them, as it seems most of the people who go out of their way to bash unions do. My guess could be wrong though.)

Don’t you get it, Sundown? This isn’t the way God(TM) intended it to be. Our Corperate Overlords have every right to treat their workers as lower than beasts or burden. And if they didn’t want to be treated so badly, they shouldn’t've been poor in the first place.

  7. Nimrod Gently says:

Because Unions are teh Socialisms!!!!! OMG OMG OMG TEH REDZORZ!

He wouldn’t put it exactly like that, but that’s basically what he’d mean.

I don’t have anything against unions. I’ve been a member of a union as have members of my family.

It is the union leadership I detest as this whole Wake Up Walmart is not about serving the interests of the employees of Wal-Mart, but rather serving the interests of the union leadership. They see a big pot of gold on the other side of that Wal-Mart rainbow and they want in.

I don’t see the same campaigns against stores like Target and Publix, a retailer and grocer that offer lower pay and less benefits than Wal-Mart. Of course, their profit margins aren’t as high as Wal-Mart. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
