John McCain Wants To Regulate The Internet

I can’t keep track of those “conservative” positions.

You mean, such as deregulation to ensure profits for corporations, but restrictions on free speech? Wonder why Nicco Mele would be a party to this?

From the first line of the legislation….

“To modernize and expand the reporting requirements relating to child pornography, to expand cooperation in combating child pornography, to require convicted sex offenders to register online identifiers…..”

You really think protecting kids from sexual exploitation is a bad idea ollie? I didn’t realize you were that much of a “free-thinker…”

Sites may include not only Facebook and MySpace, but also Amazon.com, which permits author profiles and personal lists, and blogs like DailyKos, which allows users to sign up for personal diaries.

Now is the bolded part actually in the legislation, or just ThinkProgress’ commentary? I think it would be highly suspicious if St. McCain were crafting legislation mentioning user comments on DailyKos but not mentioning them on FreeRepublic or LGF.

And pedro, I won’t speak for Ollie, but as for myself, yes, I think protecting kids from exploitation is a bad idea if it entails censoring the entire friggin’ Internet. This strikes me as not too much different in effect from crap like that Communications Decency Act that R’s tried to pass in the days when the existence of the Internet first entered the general public consciousness in a big way about 10 years ago. I remember on Bill Maher’s ABC show one of the many right wing moralist pecksniffs insisting that they only want to create a “safe zone” for kids. But there are already plenty of “safe zones” on the net, what McCain wants to do is what moralist pecksniffs have tried to do for centuries: turn the entire world into the kids-only zone. That there are (and should be) parks, playgrounds, and schools doesn’t mean that there can’t exist anywhere bars, clubs, and red-light districts.

Nice to be reminded of how much Pedro respects our intelligence.

Pedro, McCain does not make any connection between his proposed regulations of the internet and how it would decrease the power or presence of online predators. His scope is not limited to online networking sites (many of which do have internal policies already to deal with reports of abuse to such a purpose) but others tangentially related like Amazon.com and DailyKos. Under the pretext of saving kids from predators he’s taking measures (which he cannot demonstrably relate to their stated end) that would simply grant the government enough control to punish whoever they want however they like. Seriously, say you had a blog, with comments, and I log on anonymously and post a video of child porn, and at the same instance I tell the govt about it, and there it is on the net when they check. You, by dint alone of accepting anonymous comments, are now charged with endorsing child pornography, and can be fined for doing so. Its an absurd law, and if you bothered to think for even a fraction of a second you’d realize that and not even bother trying to come up with baseless attacks, such as insinuating that OW is in favor of sexually endangering children.
As ever, pedro, you are completely, utterly, staggeringly, and embarassingly wrong about everything. Go away, please, for the good of the country.

You’re right Pedro, this act is about protecting kids from pedophiles.

Oh, and the Clear Skies Act is about helping the environment and the Healthy Forests Initiative is about preventing forest fires. They’re not just acts of deregulation to help Republican lobbying interests. I mean, can’t you read their names?

  7. Gravatar Icon 7 Oliver

“For the children” is the last refuge of scoundrels. It’s like me saying I want all the Republican congressman rounded up… to protect the children.

McCain is not a conservative. The deranged senator should retire, go home, get some rest, and for god’s sake stay out of the sun.

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 Diamond LeGrande

    McCain:

    * Communications Decency Act? Supported.

    * Net Neutrality? Opposed.

    * Internet sales tax? Opposed. Sponsored the legislation opposing.

    * Commununications Decency Act II? Supported. Sponsored the legislation supporting.

The man opposes regulation of the Internet for business interests, but supports it for you and me. And I can keep my kid from not looking at porn myself without any help from John McCain.

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 Dr pedro

Did any of you actually read the legislation?

Diamond, are you a child pornographer?

You know if you wanted an intelligent conversation (yay, I know, on OW? crazy talk), you might have explained the INTENT of the law first, then go on to explain the possible pitfall.

It is called “honesty” you should try it sometime. I promise Soros won’t fire you for it…(At least I don’t THINK he will…)

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 Nimrod Gently

    Pedro needs an intervention, fast.

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 dr pedro

Nimrod sure makes it obvious when he doesn’t have a counter-argument doesn’t he…

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 Diamond LeGrande

As a parent, pedro, that has to be the most insulting thing I have read all day. Bordering on libel, in fact. No, couching it in the form of a question is not a defense. The real question is whether or not using my pseudonym counts as identification.

I strongly suggest you recant, pedro. I’m not interested in suing, but this crossed a line. There was NOTHING funny about this, and nothing related to making a point.

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 Diamond LeGrande

Oh, and “from not looking at porn” should, obviously, be “from looking at porn.” But pedro knew that.

This all dovetails nicely with the push by the fed to get ISP’s to retain all your web surfing data, not to mention the whole NSA wiretapping fiasco. Independent thought really freaks out the GOP.

It’s Big Brother wrapped up in child protective clothing.

Apparently child porn is whatever the feds say it is.

Pedro’s been banned for 30 days. You can argue about this stuff without calling people child molesters.

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 Nimrod Gently

Whatever will Dugger do without his clone?

Assuming he can still read this: you can’t form a counter-argument against surrealism.

You mean like your comment about “diddling kids like some Republicans”?

This strikes me as not too much different in effect from crap like that Communications Decency Act that R’s tried to pass in the days when the existence of the Internet first entered the general public consciousness in a big way about 10 years ago.

You mean the one that Bill Clinton signed and that passed with widespread Democratic support?

Attempting to regulate the Internet is something politicians try to do. The Democrats are no better than the Republicans on that. Democrats on the FEC wanted to apply McCain-Feingold rules to blogs at one point.

It’s a non-partisan issue because for the most part, the politicians in DC have only a rudimentary grasp of how the Internet works.

We’ve all known people who say they’ll never order anything on the Internet, even though placing an order at Amazon is just as safe as purchasing something at a store. There are the people who think child predators lurk on every page on every site and that everybody is watching what you do.

That’s how most politicians think when discussing the Internet.

The best thing to do is for the tech community to stick together on issues like this and not let it devolve into a GOP vs. Dem thing and support the politicians who “get it.” They are a rare breed but growing.

I’m really worried about McCain, because at this stage, I honestly believe he’ll blow whoever he has to to become President.

This proposed law is nonsense in the highest degree. It’s like saying you want to get rid of newspapers because you want to protect dogs that get smacked in the nose and houseflies.

In about a year I thought McCain was an interesting politician, now I think he’s a very dangerous, power-hungry ideologue.

Now you know what most Republicans have known for years — that Sen McCain is no conservative, but a political whore of the worst kind — could we at least stop calling him a “maverick”?

    Merry Christmas, pedugger! LoL!

Actually, St. McCain was the only Republican in the whole of Congress to vote against the original CDA, but then he went on to co-sponsor CDA II.

I am flabbergasted. The majority of people on here say one way or the other. Let me tell you a story. I was working at a restaurant where a 16 year old girl came to work. LONG story short: I liked her (it’s hard not to like a girl that tells you she shaves, what color her thong is, and how she likes to have sex repeatedly for 3 months). I was over 18. We started dating. We talked to her parents. she moved in. We were together for a year! My ex-wife lied to the cops to get them to come to my house. I was arrested. Her mother lied on the stand at my trail. I spent 2.5 years in prison. She took everything I owned and wrote me a “Dear John” telling me she was using me while I was in prison. I now register. I get death threats in my mailbox, of which I am very glad my 15 year old daughter did not find. i learned I was the 3rd person she did this to! Do I need to register? Do I need to look over my shoulder? She lost her virginity at 14 to a 24 year old and had averaged one sex partner a month since she lost her virginity. Again, keep in mind we were together for a year, so she had a new partner every couple of weeks. DO I NEED TO REGISTER, AND FEAR FOR MY AND MY FAMILIES SAFETY? The ignorant make me so sick. the statistics are inflated to suite the purpose of the speaker. Do some research, get an education, and leave me alone… And yes, my daughter and my wife know all the details. In closing, this girl contacted me on MYSPACE to ask for forgiveness. I said she would not have it until I did not have to register. So she contacted my wife and tried to cause our divorce. Again, do I deserve this? A number on weeks back, maybe even months, I sent a letter to all my local congressman, and Senator McCain from Arizona, regarding McCains Sexual Exploitation of Children bill. I cited case law, statistics, etc. My point to him was that we need to reform the system as a whole for the offenders that are not dangerous, like myself. His response was to tell me nothing regarding my issue, but to tell me that the bill is important because 200 new images of children appear on the net everyday. While I do find the issue of child pornography to be important, I find that number laughable compared to other crimes in the US alone. He was referring to images on the net as a whole, not as a problem in the US. Again, considering 200, that very may well be of one person. Again, I do not disregard this as an issue. I do however oppose any legislation that is going to make my life harder. from what I have been able to find, the bill has clauses to it that would be federal mandate for sex offenders to register every three months and that everyone would be coined the same. A predator is a predator after all, correct? NOT correct. While 90% of the SO population do not need to be monitored, I agree that there are the few that do. I did time with some very bad people. The collateral damage would be so high I cannot begin to fathom the ramifications to SO’s families, let alone the SO who lives in the county next to me who has to pay $140.00 every time he/she register’s, or the SO in Arizona who has to renew his/her Driver’s License once a year and pay a $100.00 registration fee. It is hard for me to get a job that pays, thank god for my wife being a government worker. I am not alone. I feel scorned, I feel hurt, and I feel like I am not looked upon the same as a normal human being. My family has to deal with this. It does not matter how many people tell me that I am a descent person, or a good father to my 15 year old daughter. Not to mention every time my wife tells me I am a good husband who works very hard. I do not FEEL it. I am in college. I get a 4.0. I want to preserve any quality of life I can for my self and my family. I do not FEEL it, and I cannot put these things into words so that my wife can understand what I am feeling. I am preparing a response to Senator McCains letter regarding a push for reform. If anyone has links to statistics in the US, or has a any intelligent thoughts on these issues I would appreciate the input. I know he is glorifying the stats and trying to appeal to the “feel good law” crowd. It’s evident in his blowing me off in such a manner. i will post my response when I have written it. Thank you for your time people. Screw all you “feel good law” believers. It is not the ends to the means. 90% of people convicted of a sex offense NEVER reoffend. Sex offenses have the 2nd lowest rate in recidivism. 86% of the offenses are committed by family members! Start channeling the energy and fear into something that deserves it, like getting Bush out of office and leave me the hell alone. I use myspace to contact friends and family. I have not been found because my zipcode does not match mt registration zipcode. That would become a felony with a prison sentence of ten years. I have done so to escape the girl mentioned above and my ex-wife. So that to will now be a crime?
