  1. Adam Herman says:

Oliver, did you read the article showing how port security was mostly a waste of money?

You know, kind of like missile defense.

  2. Actually, the test was a smashing success. The money has been pocketed, and the idiotic program hasn’t been canned.

  3. dr pedro says:

Yup, another failed test…time to cash in the chips and go home….

“Now, NIH-supported scientists have developed a more efficient technique to derive dopaminergic neurons from hESCs (human embryonic stem cells) They have grafted these hESC-derived highly enriched dopaminergic neurons into the brains of parkinsonian rats. The cells were able to significantly improve motor function. However, after three months of transplantation, the scientists examined the brains of the rats and found that many of the grafts contained groups of undifferentiated cells that have become cancerous tumors”

WHAT! Stem cell treatments cause CANCER! Failed….time to cash in the chips and go home…no sense throwing money down THAT failed pathway eh Ollie?

  4. Joey Doughnuts says:

    Pedro,

Your comments here have failed to convince anyone of anything. FAILED! GO HOME!

  5. Oliver says:

The difference between scientific investigation into the unknown (stem cells) and building something that’s supposed to work a certain way but never does even in rigged tests (missile defense) is worlds apart.

  6. Oliver says:

ALSO: If only we spent as much on stem cell research and other science as we do on boondoggles like missile defense.

  7. mdhatter says:

If it weren’t for absurdly remote missile test sites, who would have built the roads into ANWR for the oil companies to use?

oh, right, we would have anyhow.

I agree that the tests were a smashing success. I’m betting there was at least a 10 to 1 return on investment for those campaign contributions.

  8. dr pedro says:

Not that you aren’t trustworthy OW, but why are they worlds apart? One is the science of technology, the other the nature of DNA…but both are scientific endevours, and both will have success and failures associated with them.

You’ll be happy to know that Senator Brownback has suggested a “Manhattan Project” type approach to curing cancer, to include (non-embryonic)stem cell research…can I expect to hear you applauding his expected presidential candidacy?

  9. Nimrod Gently says:

Oh, is that how it works? Oliver’s opinions happen to coincide with the opinions of the far-right nutrag and so now he has to be part of his PAC?

  10. william says:

“never does even in rigged tests”

Sorry, but there was a successful test as recently as September -

“An interceptor missile destroyed a mock warhead in space over the Pacific Ocean on Friday, a key test of the U.S. missile defense system that prompted North Korea to accuse America of threatening war.
It was the most realistic test of the systems that would be used against an attack, said Missile Defense Agency spokesman Rick Lehner.”

  11. Duros62 says:

Sorry, but there was a successful test as recently as September -

    Oh, was it standing still?

that Senator Brownback has suggested a “Manhattan Project” type approach to curing cancer,

It is my belief that there will never be a cure for cancer found, or at the very least, released to the public. There is way too much money involved in cancer research.

  12. Dugger says:

Yes, boys and girls. Let leftists handle your security. For America, for instance, they recommedn doing away with the missile defense program and surrendering in Iraq. But lest you think thats their whole agenda, they would invade Pakistan to find OBL.

BTW, you are testing because you don’t know if everything will work right. I know. Progressives would have no need for R & D, because if it didn’t work very first time, they wouldn’t do it. Cure for polio? Never happen under progressives. Stealth bomber? Same answer. No wonder people doubt your word on man made global warming. You clueless.

  13. Duros62 says:

    You clueless.
    No, you am.
Once again, I think I can speak for a majority of the Progressives here when I say I have no idea what the fuck you are talking about.

  14. Duros62 says:

But that’s okay cuz I don’t think you do either.

  15. Oliver says:

Yes, allow the rightists on whose watch 3,000 terrorists kill Americans and then in response launched a botched war that killed 3,000 more and counting to handle your security.

Heaven forbid we go into Pakistan to get OBL because that’s where he fucking is and not Baghdad.

  16. peggy says:

Bush must be happy now that N.Korea has at least baby nukes because that make missle defense “necessary”.

So it doesn”t matter if it works.

  17. buma says:

Everyone knows that the only way a politician can be considered strong on defense is to throw more money on defense programs than the next guy. Doesn’t matter which programs, only that you throw money at them.

  18. Wilbur says:

Right you are, buma. Remember how the Rebumplikins crucified Kerry in 2004 for his senate votes against weapons programs that even Dick Cheney opposed at the time?

  19. Dugger says:

But all in all, you want us out of Iraq, many progressives want us out of Afghan and now you want to deep six the missile defense program – with N Korea and Iran out there. Just how will progressives protect this country? Just be nice to Mr Kim? Sheesh!

  20. Nimrod Gently says:

By not assuming that everyone is an enemy and war is inevitable?

  21. midderpidge says:

So it is better to have a hugely expensive and inneffective missile defense program to counter the threat of North Korea, than to spend a little diplomatic effort and you know, maybe stop North korea from having Nukes in the first place. Good point Pedruggers.

That’s how we should know Pedo is a doctor, a pound of cure is a hell of a lot better than an ounce of prevention.

  22. dr pedro says:

“Heaven forbid we go into Pakistan to get OBL because that’s where he fucking is and not Baghdad.”

But Ollie, OBL is ….CONTAINED…I always thought that was good enough, right?

  23. fd10801 says:

spend a little diplomatic effort ?

    What a foolish statement …

How’s this for a sample of a “little diplomatic effort”?

  24. Dugger says:

“we go into Pakistan to get OBL because that’s where he f*cking* is”

Well, h*ll. I KNOW he’s on the planet. Why don’t we go and get the sumb*tch. Invade earth now! Let John Murtha handle the invasion. Maybe whe’ll have us stage out of Pluto.

  25. midderpidge says:

Way to go missile defensers! Now Russia is rejoining the arms race and deploying new ICBMs! You guys are great.
