Bill Richardson is in.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is expected to formally file papers to form a presidential exploratory committee in January. But today he told FOX News “I am running,” as he described the professional and personal experiences that he believes have prepared him for the job.

“I’ve dealt with the issues that are very important today — national security, immigration and energy,” said Richardson, who was Secretary of Energy and later U.N. Ambassador during the Clinton administration.

  1. Rheinhard says:

According to Kos, Fox news is once again just
    making shit up
. (and really, what self-respecting Dem would announce their candidacy on Fox?)

  2. Ken Camp says:

Richardson did not announce for the Presidency today. Check out Washington for Richardson for the details.

  3. Marty says:

not to get off subject, but…

    …meanwhile, Michelle defends Hillary.

(And you said it never happens…)

  4. Dear Kos, Rheinhard and Ken Camp:

Try and pay a little better attention. Fox’s story never claimed that Richardson made a formal announcement of a candidacy, but accurately quoted him as saying “I’m running.”

But then, who are you going to believe, Kos’s own lying eyes, or this video.

  5. Dugger says:

    the Rat is Right

Fox must be pretty good if you can’t criticize them without making stuff up.

  6. Nimrod Gently says:

Here’s what the Richardson said on Fox which they claim counts as an announcement:

“But I’m not running as an Hispanic, I am running as an American who is proud to be Hispanic.”

In context, that was part of a hypothetical discussion about his possible presidential run. Hypothetical. Look it up.

Before you rush to the defence of Your Side, you should probably look at the facts first if you don’t want to look like Kool-Aid drinking morons.

  7. Jay says:

Cmon Nimrod. If it was hypothetical, wouldn’t he have said, “But I wouldn’t be running as a Hispanic, I’d be running as an American who is proud to be Hispanic.”

That would make a little more sense.

The only ones drinking Kool-Aid are the ones who think that making an announcement like that on Fox News is a mortal sin.

  8. Rheinhard says:

Considering that (a) Richardson said later explicitly on CNN that he would not announce until Januray, and (b) the entire quote is:

In addition to his previous experience in the Clinton White House, Richardson believes that his Hispanic heritage will be an advantage in his campaign for the presidency.

“I am Hispanic, which I believe is an asset,” Richardson said. “But I’m not running as an Hispanic, I am running as an American who is proud to be Hispanic.”

which is more about the question of “Can a Hispanic man be president?” than “Are you running?”, it would at a minimum have been better if Fox had said “Richardson, considering a run, proud of racial heritage but doesn’t consider it a central factor.”

My, it seems the wingnutosphere is all up in the media’s face about getting every last comma accurate with documentation in triplicate signed in blood when it’s the AP, but FOx News? Jumping the gun in the name of a story is just par for the course.

  9. Nimrod Gently says:

What Reinhard said. I did say, “in context”. Faking stupidity will get you nowhere.

    CONTEXT HAS A LIBERAL BIAS

  10. Jay says:

It still does not explain why he said, “I’m running.”

He let the cat out of the bag. People make ‘formal’ announcements so they can have the whole thing set up with the press all there, supporters around him and ‘Richardson 2008′ banners behind him, etc.

  11. Nimrod Gently says:

So, what, context is just something that happens to other people?

Also, I’m going to keep quoting this because it’s pretty much the touchstone of the discussion:

My, it seems the wingnutosphere is all up in the media’s face about getting every last comma accurate with documentation in triplicate signed in blood when it’s the AP, but Fox News? Jumping the gun in the name of a story is just par for the course.

  12. Jay says:

Why did he say, “I’m running.”? I’ve been asked hypothetical questions before. I’ve never responded like he did.

Q: “What would you do with a million dollars?”

A: “I’d buy a big house and a new car.” NOT “I am buying a big house and a new car.”

  13. Jay Caruso admits: “Fox News is a mortal sin”

    Oliver, get on this!

  14. frameone says:

Tuco, tuco, tuco, you’d think after all your bullshit carping about Pelosi — “She’s chosen Hastings! It’s a done deal! She’s sold out national security to please the evil CBC” — you would have learned to keep your mouth shut before all the facts are in.

And now the idiot Jay has jumped on your creeky bandwagon. Not a good sign, Tuco, not a agood sign.

I have no doubt that Richardson will run for president or at least explore very publicly the possibility. But he didn’t announce his candidacy on Fox. Carl Cameron announced his candidacy, not Richardson.

Why on earth would Richardson, or any presidential hopeful, announce his candidacy off camera like that, allowing Cameron to paraphrase his big news?

Tuco, Dugger and Jay, just three more idiots dazzled by editing. What a bunch of rubes.

  15. Dugger says:

Well, no matter. I guess Fox, then, should have stated what Richardson thought instead of what he said. After all progressives have been doing this for years – telling us what Pres. Bush really thinks and what his ‘real’ motives are. We’re just slow on this mind-reading thing. I guess that Southwestern Connecticut State Teachers, Cone Setters and Dishwasher’s College student’s essay was right about conservatives.

  16. Quaker in a Basement says:

Personally, I’m ignoring all so-called “presidential candidates” until the next…whatchacallit?….oh, election!

  17. frameone says:

“Fox, then, should have stated what Richardson thought instead of what he said.”

Please, Oh wise fugger, what did he say? He certainly didn’t say on camera that he was announcing his candidacy. And now his people are confirming that he said no such thing and that he wasn’t announcing his run.

Don’t both those factors have anything to do with how we read his on camera statement?

  18. Marty says:

Wow- this whole thread is just getting silly. The article says he is running- not that he made a formal announcement (The first line says that the formal announcement will come in January.) Why exactly are you all getting your panties in a bunch about this?

Are there any doubts that he is planning to run and confirmed it in the interview?

No matter how much you hate Fox News, I think you can agree to that.

  19. Jay says:

I haven’t had a dose of Frameone jackassery for awhile now. He’s right on cue.

Fox News didn’t say Richardson “announced” his candidacy. All they reported is that he said, “I’m running.”

Again, who answers hypothetical questions like he does? Who?

And since when is a run for the Presidency big news these days? Like I said, the only reason why they make ‘formal’ announcements is so that they can pimp the date for all it is worth for a month. Like I said, Richardson let the cat out of the bag, yet we have dipshit Frame saying we’re ‘rubes’ because Fox accurately reported what Richardson said.

    Yeah, that makes sense.

Why exactly are you all getting your panties in a bunch about this?

Because Kos told them something was wrong and like good little parrots are repeating it.

  20. frameone says:

“Are there any doubts that he is planning to run and confirmed it in the interview?”

My beef is that Richardson obviously wants to choose the best time andplace to announce his candidacy and he’d want to do it with the utmost hype and fanfare. If Richardson told Fox “I am running” it’s news because as far as I know it would be the first time he’s told anyone officially that he would be running.

But announcing his candidacy — “I am running” — to Carl Cameron off camera doesn’t exactly make any sense given the whole PR point of official announcements.

According to Kos, Richardson’s people say that the Governor did not announce his candidacy to Fox. That sort of flies in the face of Fox’s statement that Richardson confirmed his candidacy.

I agree that this is all, by and large, much ado about nothing but if Fox misrepresented what Richardson said they should be called out on it.

  21. Nimrod Gently says:

Jay, what’s the point in pretending to be this stupid? I do not believe that the idea of two people discussing a hypothetical scenario in the present tense is really so alien to you. Is defending Fox News that important to you?

  22. Because Kos told them something was wrong and like good little parrots are repeating it.

Umm, actually, because a news channel that other little parrots follow religiously got a story wrong, and the grownups care about accuracy. But thanks for highlighting how you care more about tweaking strangers on the internet than the integrity of newscasters. You’re certainly striking a blow for the credibility of “citizen journalists.”

  23. Jay says:

Whose defending Fox News? And apparently, considering the tone, it seems that much more important to you and others to prove to yourself that Fox was wrong.

I’m just wondering why you people are have such a freaking heart attack because Richardson let it slip that he’s running for President. Like it would be a surprise when he announces in January.

  24. Jay says:

Umm, actually, because a news channel that other little parrots follow religiously got a story wrong, and the grownups care about accuracy.

    Sure they do August.

But thanks for highlighting how you care more about tweaking strangers on the internet than the integrity of newscasters.

Well it’s more fun especially when people get their panties in a bunch over ‘news’ that really isn’t news.

You’re certainly striking a blow for the credibility of “citizen journalists.”

    I do my best.

  25. Nimrod Gently says:

Well, that sure showed him, Jay. That he’s right.

  26. frameone says:

“Well it’s more fun especially when people get their panties in a bunch over ‘news’ that really isn’t news.”

And why isn’t it news? Because, per Richardson’s office, he didn’t announce his candidacy.

  27. Jay says:

Because, per Richardson’s office, he didn’t announce his candidacy.

And Fox News did not report that he announced his candidacy. They reported he said, “I’m running” which he did.

Of course, that’s not true either because he was speaking hypothetically, and according to Nimrod, speaking hypothetically in the present tense is a common occurrence.

Sigh. Where’s the Woodward and Bernstein of old when you need them?

  28. Nimrod Gently says:

They reported he announced his candidacy (when he didn’t) and you know it. They put it in very specific terms so people like you could say “ah, but” but they made the claim.

  29. Oliver says:

My two cents: I think Richardson slipped and I think Fox trumpeted it too loudly.

  30. frameone says:

“They reported he said, “I’m running” which he did.”

Jesus, keerist. Here’s what they reported:

But on Thursday he told FOX News “I am running,” as he described the professional and personal experiences that he believes have prepared him for the job.

They ran this under the headline: “New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson: ‘I Am Running’ in 2008″

Cameron obviously took Richardson’s misstatement and tried to turn it into an announcement that he was running in 2008. Again, I have no doubt that Richardson will probably run in 2008 but he has not yet officially announced his candidacy and Fox reported their interview as if he had. Look at that headline again, Jay.

Reporting a Democrat’s gaffe as news. Sounds just like Fox.

  31. Jay says:

Reporting a Democrat’s gaffe as news.

You know what they say right? A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth.

  32. Marty says:

O- agreed. I don’t think it will be a game changing slip on Richardson’s path to the nomination.

(Actually, I like Richardson except maybe his stance on illegal immigration. He’s a good governor and has some fiscal restraint.)

  33. frameone says:

“A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth.”

    Sheesh. You’re an idiot.

  34. Jay says:

    Sheesh. You’re an idiot.

The quote comes from Michael Kinsley moron. I didn’t make it up.

  35. frameone says:

    “I didn’t make it up.”

I know you didn’t make it up but it’s an idiotic response in this instance as Fox was deliberately distorting Richardson’s words to make sound like he had announced his candidacy. Again, read the headline. Idiot.

  36. Jay says:

Asshole, this is what the headline says:

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson: ‘I Am Running’ in 2008

Exactly what is wrong in that headline? How can they distort what he said when that is what he said?

Are you comfortable basically saying, “Hey everybody, look how goddamned stupid I am!!” all the time?

For crissakes, even Oliver agrees with me that Richardson goofed. Fox knew it and presented it that way.

Just shut up about it already.

  37. frameone says:

“Exactly what is wrong in that headline? How can they distort what he said when that is what he said?”

Jay, the headline makes it seem like Richardson announced he was running. Fox did not present Richardson’s comment as a “goof.” They presented it as if he intentionally said “I’m running” in 2008.

The idea that Fox presented this as it was, a lapse in the careful language all politicians thinking about the presidency use, is total fantasy on your part. Again, the headline speaks for itself becuase Richardson did not say “I’m running in 2008.” He used the phrase “I’m running” and Fox inserted the “in 2008″ as a paraphrase.

I think this goes bacl to the Kerry flap. Keery misspoke but Fox reported it as if he meant to say what he said and actually believed it. Nothing could have been further from the truth.

The fact that you think Fox was being an honest broker in this exchange is emblematic of how little you care about the truth and its representation.

What if Cameron had reported the story this way: “During an interview, Richardson let down his guard in a Freudian slip and deviated from the careful language politicians considering a run from the presidency usually use.”

    1) He would have been reporting what actually happened.
    2) He would have had a better story because it brings to light in a humorous way, the larger picture of how politicians use language to manuevre around issues.

But Cameron didn’t report the story that way. He attempted to pass it off as if Richardson had announced his candidacy. That’s because he’s a hack. You, of course, are an idiot.

  38. Jay says:

The idea that Fox presented this as it was, a lapse in the careful language all politicians thinking about the presidency use, is total fantasy on your part.

No jackass, I never said anything about how Fox presented it. I said Richardson goofed. All I said about Fox is that the way they presented it was not untrue.

Again, the headline speaks for itself becuase Richardson did not say “I’m running in 2008.” He used the phrase “I’m running” and Fox inserted the “in 2008″ as a paraphrase.

No shit Sherlock and its’ a logical conclusion. He was interviewed about running for President. He has talked about it. He was just re-elected as Governor. It’s natural and perfectly acceptable for them to add “in 2008″ after Richardson’s statement where he says, “I’m running.”

The fact that you think Fox was being an honest broker in this exchange is emblematic of how little you care about the truth and its representation.

That’s the most hilarious thing I ever read. That’s rich coming from a member of the “fake but accurate” crowd. Get off the high horse pal.

But Cameron didn’t report the story that way. He attempted to pass it off as if Richardson had announced his candidacy.

Cameron reported what Richardson said. And the only idiot is you who believes that only Fox News creates a headline that draws people in to read the story. The headline was accurate. The story was accurate. The facts were accurate. Everything in the fucking story is true and yet you keep going on about the truth.

    Get a life twit.

  39. frameone says:

OMG are you the fucking idiot who previously wrote this:

“Just shut up about it already.”

    What a moron.

  40. Jay says:

I told you to shut up as a favor. Yet, you continued to indulge in making yourself look like a dumbass.

    Dumbass.

  41. Nimrod Gently says:

    Tonight, on Crossfire.

  42. frameone says:

“The headline was accurate. The story was accurate. The facts were accurate.”

You see someone close one eye. Was it a twitch or a wink?

Cameron reported it as a wink knowing it was a twitch.
