You’ve made several enormous assumptions about me and my opinions on the basis of my 2 questions and leapt quickly to defend your point of view.

I never suggested your opinion is less valid because you have not lost an immediate family member in active military service in Iraq.

Your post was asking in the past tense.

The answer to the second is no. However, my best friend died from a gunshot in Iraq. That was not a fun experience. Whilst it isn’t close to a family member, it still hurt badly to see someone that young die. But he died doing what he loved and for what he loved. He emailed me saying that he was looking forward to coming home and sharing the great news and progress from Iraq. That never happened. But I am proud and his family is proud of what he did.

Would my opinion have had anymore validity if I had told you that a close family member in Iraq? I would doubt it. You are just looking for a way to discredit my opinion.

Do you agree with abortion? Has anyone in your family gotten one?
Do you agree with euthenasia? Has anyone in your family been euthinized?

Questions like that you asked me are pure non-sense used by the left because they have no arguement. They can’t prove the point, and they can’t disprove the oposition’s point. The next best thing is to disprove the opposition as a valid source, This is nonsense, but many people actually try it as you did, and I am sure many people actually believe the results. I would encourage anyone interested in real debate to not attack the oppents credibility even when they are offering a credible point. If someone lies, or spews Al Sharpton-esque lies and rhetoric, then attack the point. But unless the debate is about the person, don’t turn it into an ad homonim attack.

We went into there with the intent of spreading democracy. We had faulty intelligence saying that there were WMDs. Bush thought there were, the intelligence communities thought there were, Bush had a reason to go into Iraq besides stopping Hussien. We toppled a tyranical leader, we have had a successful election cycle. We have seen a Constitution ratified. Try telling me that the Iraqis are getting the short end of the stick. Yes there are deaths. Yes, there are problems, but if we stay the course, the country will thrive. Image when the Unionists looked like they were being pushed into Richmond, and were losing the civil war, should they have abandoned their belief and let the Conferderates win? No. Any person more than an idiot would say no.

If you think that me helping those that help the highest up ha nothing to do with the economy, that is fine. I do research mainly on South Pacific markets and their volitilities. It may not be the most fun, but it is essential. Do I think that another person would do the same job? yes. Would they do as well? I doubt it. There is a reason I got picked after three interviews.

The same is true for Iraq, times are tough (although far less tough than the civil war) but that makes it the worst time to surrender and cut and run.
This war will be decisive as to whether extremists topple governments in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, or if democracy prevails. If democracy prevails everyone wins. If we leave and the Middle East crumbles into ruins controlled by militias, it will by my generation’s legacy.

Well, actually, I am interning at the GAO, doing a useful job for the government. You will probably disagree but there are more ways to help your country than to join the military. Right now I am making sure that the economy runs smoothly, which I personally find to be an important job.

Saying you have a 3.6/4.0 means absolutely nothing in terms of this conversation. It says only slightly more in terms of your smarts. For all we know, you managed a 3.6 because you’re an ace at Psych 100, Introduction to Film Studies 104, and Leisure Studies 108.

Now you could go ahead and give us a list of your incredibly advanced particle physics classes, but (a) that is also besides the point, and (b) we don’t know you and you can’t prove it. Or if you really believe that the only thing soldiers should be trained to do is use their guns, then maybe you should spend a few days auditing ROTC.

Marty’s right that the story needs corroboration. However, reports indicate that the state Iraqi police and military have been corrupted almost from inception, and are rife with sectarians, Baathist infiltrators, and basic incompetence. So while one cannot corroborate this particular story as yet, the underlying fact is that there is a severe infrastructure problem that thus far nobody has found a viable solution for.
