Man, am I glad Cynthia McKinney isn’t around any more.
The man who knocked Georgia Rep. Cynthia McKinney out of Congress said he immediately recognized the name tag of the Capitol Hill police officer he ran into by chance in a congressional hallway this week. After all, it was the officer’s much-publicized altercation with McKinney - when she objected to being asked for identification before entering a Hill office building - that solidified opposition to the combative lawmaker and paved the way for the freshman-elect, Hank Johnson, to beat her.
“Quite frankly, I’ve been looking forward to meeting him,” Johnson said in an interview at the hotel where he’s staying a few blocks from the Capitol during new-member orientation. “That’s just something that needed to be done.”
“I apologized to him for any embarrassment the incident may have caused him or his family, and he appreciated that,” Johnson added. “I told him if he ever asked me to comply, that I would, that he wouldn’t have to worry about that.”
Johnson, 52, is among more than 50 new members in town this week to learn the ropes of a becoming a member of Congress. He is one of three new black members and the only new practicing Buddhist.
Whoa, wait… a Buddhist? We have a non-Judeo-Xtian Congressperson? Isn’t that supposed to threaten the survival of Western Civilization or something now? Won’t he be part of the conspiracy to ban Christmas and make us all worship cows, or whatever the hell Buddhists do? Somebody alert O’Reilly!!!
Just like a Buddhist to go around, you know, mending fences and stuff. That kind of behavior really has no place in Congress, does it?
Buddhism: isn’t that the alternative to Scientology for the rich and influential? Given what I know of this empty suit, I’d say his behavior is more an episode of public ass-kissing than “mending fences.”
For the record, about the only thing that article gets right about McKinney is that she was “combative.” The fawning over kiss-ass Johnson is laughable. I especially like this part:
Johnson met President Bush at the White House, where he also talked briefly with Bush adviser Karl Rove about the legacy of Abraham Lincoln.
…
“It was quite interesting to listen to him, and then his cell phone rang and that broke up the conversation.”
“Yes, Mr. Rove, I understand that your fantasy football pals take precedence over my sycophancy…”
It’s a good thing Georgia traded someone who opposed the liars and criminals in the Rethug party for someone who will “take [Bush] at his word.” If Hank Johnson is any indication of this new Democratic revolution (and I sincerely hope he is not), then the new boss ain’t much more than a spineless doormat for the old boss.
Cynthia McKinney is famous for assaulting a first responder and believing Bush has pre-knowledge of 9-11. And they showed her the door.
As a whole, the Democrats are becoming less unreasonable.
this is just pathetic. That cop had no authority to stop that congresswoman. That cop new she was a congresswoman, and had no right to demand compliance. By order of the constitution, Article I, Section 6; no congressperson may be arrested or interferred with when comming and or going to congress.
you people dance for others approval and say things because they make you sound reasonable. all they make you sound is weak. Strength isn’t a political position, it’s something you exude or you don’t. You’ll never look strong when you’re throwing your own under the bus.
Heck dugger, the dems aren’t becoming more reasonable, the’re becoming republicans! This is the one thing the dems know in their hearts:
The american people embrace republican values. Hell, why do you think it was a democratic president that pushed through welfare reform, something the republicans had pushed for for years.
Like I said, I don’t really care what letter is after someones name as long as they get the ideas right.
Oh, and soulite….strength also comes from a rudimentary grasp of the english language, but comme on, you new that right?
Oh, and soulite….strength also comes from a rudimentary grasp of the english language, but comme on, you new that right?
In this usage, it’s spelled “knew”.
Americans embrace Democratic positions, and reject Republican positions; the problem is that Republicans have managed to muddy the waters by cynical appeals to “values,” few of which they actually hold.
Republicans hate everything America stands for.
The Republican party has values? Wow, if only they were positive values instead of hate, hypocrisy and greed.
Michael I apologize, irony is lost on yew……
But shorter for your second post:
Americans are too stupid to know who to vote for
Very nice…
Different Michaels, actually (I’m the lowercase one). But the elections of 2000 and 2004 sure made me wonder about the depths of human stupidity. I feel a little better now.
Cynthia McKinney is as conspiracy extreme on the left as Rush Limbaugh is extreme on the right. Which one gets more traction?
Given what I know of this empty suit…
Which is what, exactly, CS?
I especially like the Rove story. That’s how a diplomat dishes the dirt. Johnson has very clearly said exactly what you understood: Rove found his unseen caller more important than an incoming black legislator. And yet, he slipped the knife in so quietly that no one could ever find fault.
A masterpiece.
I’d rather have a Democrat who behaves like classically principled Republicans than have this ridiculous crop of so-called conservatives running things any longer.
The only similarities between the old Republicans and the new breed seem to be a desire for smaller government–but while the old guard wanted less bureaucracy, the new guard wants a government so small that it can be run by three people–Bush, Cheney, and Karl Rove.
Oliver, you’ve got some pretty weird commenters.
Article I, Section 6:
“They shall in all cases, except treason, felony and breach of the peace, be privileged from arrest during their attendance at the session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same…”
I’m guessing that an altercation with a police officer who was merely doing his job would qualify as a “breach of the peace.”
Soullite, I kinda knew someone would come in and sing this tune.
Of course he had a right to ask for ID. Even if he was the Grand Wizard of the KKK, he could ask her to identify herself. She didn’t have her pin or whatever it is that IDs her as a congressperson. It doesn’t matter if he knew who she was or not. If she had beef, she could’ve written him up in a formalized report through proper channels. She could’ve called a press conference to address the problem. But she decided to get “hood with it”.
I’ve worked my entire adult life in classified and/or restricted sites. These guards get to know people by face, some they don’t. Doesn’t matter. If you’re asked to identify yourself, you do it. You don’t snap and get all loud and an indignant and strike an officer. That doesn’t make you a “strong black woman”. That makes you an ignorant asshole.
Again, I knew someone would come in and claim that the new congressman is “selling out” or “dancing for the man.”. Conducting yourself in a dignified manner worthy of being a Congressperson of the United States isn’t “dancing”. It’s being a mature, rational adult.
If the Capitol police just allowed anyone to enter the building, people would be howling. I’m glad they carded McKinney and in addition to her other nuttiness, glad she’s gone.
Perfect answer, Starkley. I’m glad Oliver sees the obvious on this one.
Again, who the hell is this “Starkley” you keep referring to?
