Un'freakin believable. I can forgive Lott for trying to make an old man smile and other stupid shit that he has done in the past. I mean, damn- he went on BET and apologized (for about the fifth time.) But this guy is part of the problem in Washington.

But that vacuum is pretty big if they think that Trent Lott is the best they can do. I don't care matter how good he is with Senate procedures and counting votes. I still haven't read about anyone who is excited about this pick. (Except for Oliver, who will get to use the term "racist" about 600-700 more times over the next two years. I know he's excited.)

A dumb off, indeed.

It's beginning to look like a retirement community barbecue in the porkmeisters department on both sides. Reid, Murtha, Pelosi, Lott, McConnell, Byrd... Next thing you know, Ted Stevens will find his way into the Republican Senate leadership.

Depends?!

According to Hoyer (sp?) this morning on NPR, Pelosi told him she was supporting Murtha.

<i>Dean Barnett: "Is it just me, or is it becoming increasingly apparent that the Republicans and Democrats are determined to engage in a two year dumb-off?"</i>

It all depends on whether Pelosi goes to Murtha for the leadership position. If she does, then I'm in 100% agreement with Dean. If she doesn't, then I'd say that the Republicans are competing against themselves.

It's a horrible pick.

Now let's see if the Democrats will kindly avoid appointing impeached judges and pork kings to leadership positions.

<i>He represents the old guard big-government-Christian-Socialism when a change to a new guard is desperately needed.</i>

Agreed. As I noted in another thread, Lott's return means the Senate Republicans have learned zilch from last week's defeat and seem to have some kind of death-wish. Maybe spending some time in the back seat will remind them why the voters sidelined them in the first place. With guys like Lott in leadership they can forget all about 2008.

Hope the House Republicans have learned something. I don't have high hopes, but we'll know soon.

I agree: Trent Lott represents Southern Conservatism to a tee. It's all pork, socially crazy and authoritarian, and aggressive nationalism. If Republicans don't like Southern Conservatism, perhaps they shouldn't have based their long-term national strategy upon capturing the white Southern vote.

Yes, but Byrd was a racist in the 40s! The 1940s! And he's apologized repeatedly and said he was wrong, wrong, wrong!

I don't like the pick, either.

But not because I think Lott is a racist. He apologized for that flap and has paid the price for his transgression.

He represents the old guard big-government-Christian-Socialism when a change to a new guard is desperately needed.
