Oliver, I don't think there was a single candidate the Dems could have found to defeat Arnold. Maybe Feinstein, but that would have been ridiculous.

People are willing to vote for opposite-party governors because it doesn't affect who organizes Congress. Pataki. Romney. Also Brad Henry and Dave Freudenthal.

Angelides would have been a great governor, a better governor than Arnold. But too many people are happy with the status quo.

Look, the Hawaii Dems didn't nominate a child molester for governor, so there must be some other reason their Republican incumbent (who doesn't conform to basic GOP beliefs) was unstoppable.

One point that NO ONE has made is essential: M-O-N-E-Y!!!

The ONLY reason Dems were able to compete was money.

The ONLY reason we were able to raise a response to the desperate Hail Marys of Karl Rove's vaunted 72-houor GOTV efforts in Montana, Missouri, Virginia, and many other places was MONEY!!

In this Election cycle, Dems raised about 445M. The GOP, 600M.

Money Line says:

"... Republican incumbents’ fundraising increased by 26% over 2004 levels while spending was up by 39%.

Democratic challengers more than doubled their receipts and disbursements in 2006.."

For the first time in a generation, we were actually within striking distance of the Rethugs in dollars available the weekend before the Election!

The NY Times actually reported 2 weeks ago that we actually BEAT the GOP in corporate fundraising in September!!

This gave us the INCREDIBLE luxury of being able to throw late money on the board, to direct millions at opportunities like Murphy vs Nancy Johnson in CT-05, Yarmouth v. Northup in KY-03, Klein v. Clay Shaw in FL-22, so many races where settled GOP incumbents who Dems thought out of reach were beaten.

We now need to settle into a fundraiaing model like the GOP's: Where regular, scheduled donations are encouraged.

We need to expand and refine the ONLY reason we matched the GOP in dollars: Chairman Dean's continued use of eMail and technology and the fundraising power of PayPal to bring the American people into the process, one $20 bill at a time.

Lessons learned, Election Day 2006:

MONEY TALKS, BULLSHIT WALKS!

If Arnold somehow ran against Harold Ford, it'd be very hard to tell who was from which party. That said, I hope California pulls some nasty mid-term redistricting. DeLay those fools!

If helped that Schwartzenegger wasn't really a fire-breathing conservative like Bush. He supported stem-cell research. Schwartzenegger could easily pass for a moderate Democratic on many issues.

Oliver, California was served a bad choice. Schwartzenegger had a negativity rating of over 80% last year. If there were a candidate with even a modicum of fight and passion, he should have won in a landslide. Democrats offered up a hapless Phil Angelides. He may be a nice guy or whatever, but there was no way in hell that I was going to vote for him.

For the record, in 2008 Democrats only have to defend 12 senate seats, while Republicans have to defend 21 -- and they'll have a bunch of retirements, too, so they'll be playing heavy defense yet again. Go, Howard, go!
