One significant difference between Darfur and Iraq is that we didn’t unleash the chaos in Darfur, so we’re not responsible in the same way. Nor are some of us politically obligated to pretend that the dead don’t exist, as you do, Hedley.

As for Darfur, I would have no problem supporting military intervention to halt the genocide there that I see having no equivalence to Iraq. Are we allowed to use the word “genocide” yet in the UN?

The Iraq Body Count is an ongoing tally of all deaths in Iraq that get reported in english-language press. That’s all. It’s not an attempt to know anything more than that. If you want to study Iraqi mortality, you have to do the method that the Johns Hopkins survey remains our best guess, and that guess is that somewhere between 392,000 and 942,000 Iraqis died as a result of our invasion and occupation.

Yes, that is “probably impossible.” It’s also irrelevant to the issue at hand, which is that science’s best estimate is that we’re responsible for creating a situation in which half a million Iraqis have died.
