Tough Vote
Tweet
Republicans once again show the hard edge they use to win.
On one hand, you wonder why they have to resort to these underhanded techniques. On the other, you wonder why Democrats don’t do it.

Why complain about hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of lost, changed or surpressed votes, and tactics Hitler would be proud of when somewhere on election day a Republican bus had the air let out of its tires.
…you wonder why Democrats don’t do it.
Dude, come on. Do you really endorse that sort of thing?
The NRCC is going after Tammy Duckworth with these slimey tactics:

Oliver, you’ve been hinting at this every since I started reading this blog.
Now that you’ve come out and said I have to admit, I’ve lost a lot of respect for you.
Dems don’t do it because they’re trying to set an example. “You don’t become what you claim to abhor.” It’s one of the few rules of living that holds true no matter what.
You play hard, but you play fair. CNN is reporting that the FCC rules state that these robo-calls are ILLEGAL. I don’t WANT Dems to resort to the same crap they did back in the 60′s.
Grow the hell up and think like you’re the Good Guy. Not just “the guy that wants to win.”
Josh Marshall has quite a bit on the subject. I’ve been following it all day and I’m surprised CNN mentioned it. I figured there would be a mainstream media supression of the story.

starky, don’t be so hard on oliver. Lots of us are sick of not winning. We have been “better than they are” while seeing our country flushed down the toilet by neocons. Quite frankly, the moral high ground doesn’t help us. The Republicans have taken over with an ideaology that only about 30% of Americans at most identify with. They have used lies, deceit, and dirty dealings. I can certainly understand winning “by any means necessary”.
Hopefully, we won’t have to the way Republicans are imploding.
Two choices: win or lose. Come Wednesday morning I’d much rather win than be looking in the mirror and saying what a great guy I am while the Republican is getting sworn in to office.
I apologize for getting a little heated, but I’m a big believer in the now-quaint “good will always triumph over evil.”
It’s when you stop believing that the evil wins. The collective weight of Republican evil is collapsing their house.
Think about it. 3 years ago you would’ve been assaulted in public for saying any negative about the President. Now, down here in Pensacola, the Republican candidate for Governor won’t even be in the same TOWN as him.
All of the Republican hypocrisy and lies are being exposed to the world. Do you think this robo-call outrage would’ve been reported in ’04?
We had to see the absolute darkest days (well, not THE darkest) before America craved the light. The legalizing torture, the protecting of pedophiles for his House seat, the saying that going to war and killing 3000 soldiers was worth it to keep gas at $2.00 a gallon. It all added up and Democrats didn’t have to resort to the lying and sliming of the opposition.
They did EXACTLY what Oliver mercilessly criticized them for: They let the Republicans hang themselves with the long cord of corruption they wove.
The chickens came home to roost. Sorry if it’s not “nasty” enough for some people’s tastes. We have to save the “fight” for getting this country back on track.
Luckily for us, the nerdz at Slashdot have the whole process mapped out how to deal with these robocalls…make em suffer after the election with 2000 small claims courts.

I think these are illegal, so I wouldn’t want Dems to do it. However, I could imagine a great one like this:
“Hello, this is Pastor Ted Haggard from the True Life Church and President of the National Association of Evangelicals, and I ask you to vote for the Republicans because they stand up for family values like I uphold myself.”
Two choices: win or lose
Awww, delicious irony.
That is EXACTLY what the republicans have been saying about Iraq.
So what is it oliver…Win or Lose?
Have we figured out exactly what constitutes a win in Iraq yet? Last I heard, we didn’t have a clue.
Dems don’t do it?
You’re kidding, right? You really want to go through the decades of voter fraud and “underhanded techniques” committed by Democrats, including indictments and convictions in 2004 for actual voter fraud and intimidation? Do you really think that Dems have the high ground in this area?
I condemn any BS and dirty tricks by either party whether it’s the example noted above or the 35,000 fraudulant voter registrations by the McCaskille supporters at Missouri ACORN.
ANY fraud, tampering, intimidation, or illegal voting hurts all of us by negating legitimate votes.
Oliver- I have to assume that last line was half hearted wishful thinking on your part, but I’m choosing to believe you weren’t 100% serious.
Do I think Dems have the high ground? Absolutely. Do I want to use blunt force tactics? No. Do I think they are necessary to counter Republicans? Most likely.
Pedro: I want to win the war on terrorism, but the GOP keeping us in Iraq is making us lose that fight.
DRPedo, Iraq is like “Global Thermonuclear War”. The only winning move is not to play. Now go back to tic-tac-toe.

OK. Call.
Which Democrat was indicted or convicted in 2004 for a) voter fraud, and b) intimidation?
Show ‘em.
I looked for that too, Quaker, and its funny, nearly every article by the rightwing whacko press seems to lead off with the air being let out of the tires of some Republican buses.
You want me to give you some examples of Democrat voter fraud in 2004. How about an entire report on it.
I’m sure that you have your list too. My point is that whoever does it, it’s BS and needs to be stopped.
“Republicans complained that in at least five voting booths in four Passaic County districts using electronic voting machines, a space next to the candidates that was supposed to be blank was already marked with a vote for Menendez. When voters tried to vote for a Republican candidate, the check marks would not change, the Republicans said.”
Ah, but Marty, you see that when the American Center for Voting Rights report came out, despite the fact that it was meticulously sourced and researched, some liberal blogs found out that most of the members and founders of AC4VR had connections of some kind or another to Republicans, so that made it okay to automatically dismiss everything they said.
Now, this doesn’t stop those same people from linking to a People for the American Way study that showed mostly anecdotal evidence of Republican shenanigans, or linking to anything Daily Kos says, but you’re trying to use facts with narrow minded people who live in a constant state of denial.
And there goes Marty leading with….. flat tires on republican buses!!!
Followed up by…Crack registration
Followed by …. Allegations with no direct proof that implicates BOTH parties.
Followed by Blah, Blah Blah.
Good work Marty!
Wow, Pidge. So you’re O.K. with fraud, dirty tricks, and voter intimidation as long is it’s Democrats doing it.
Republicans do it- Fraud, intimidation, corruption, dirty tricks.
Democrats do it- “Blah, blah, blah.”
