Michael Steele: Count The Dodges & Flip-Flops

The Cardin campaign details some of the whoppers.

“Dropping in the polls and unable to defend his longstanding support
for President Bush’s agenda, Michael Steele dodged and flip-flopped all
over the map today, leaving Marylanders to wonder whether he has any
real convictions at all,” said Cardin campaign spokesman Oren Shur.
“Marylanders want a Senator who will look them in the eye and tell them
where he stands.  Michael Steele was not straight with the people of
Maryland because he can’t defend his support for the Bush agenda.”

Rep.
Cardin’s strong performance on “Meet the Press” comes on the heels of a
new Washington Post poll released this morning which showed Cardin to
have a double-digit lead over Steele: 54% – 43%.  Rep. Cardin also has
a commanding lead among African American voters: 81% – 14%.

    Oliver, I am not sure if you are from Maryland or not, but you seem to be in the know. If you are, thanks for the insight with these latest polls. I heard FAKE NEWS today-my fist sin, watching propaganda central-say that Steele is closing the gap. I guess that was just wishful thinking on their part.

    I don’t like Steele at all, I know he’s hiding the real issues: like abortion, gays, stem cells research.

    The best part was when Russert called Steele out on his “Steele Democrat” bumper stickers. It was fun watching him try to squirm his way out of it.

    Also, Steele said that we need a change in Washington. Is he not aware that his party is running the show? I mean, I’m all for change, but how does the party in power run on a platform of reforming the system that they control?

    FN- Oliver isn’t isn’t giving you any insight here. He quoted the Cardin campaign website, which of course will have glowing remarks about their candidate’s performance. You get the same glowing review of Steele’s performance on his website.

    Facts are, the poll gap has been narrowing slowly over the past weeks (though both camps will only tout the polls that make their candidate look best.) However, even as the gap narrows, it probably won’t be enough for a Steele victory unless Steele can pull in a good percentage of the African-American vote- perhaps 20-30 percent. Possible, but not likely. From what I’ve read, Cardin isn’t exactly creating any giddyness among AA voters in Maryland either.

    But it is interesting how Cardin’s campaign needed to point out the lead among African American voters though. They didn’t point out any other demographic. You’d think, in Oliver’s world, that would be considered racist. Is this just a case of the Cardin campaign trying to convince themselves that the D behind the name is a free ride amongst AA voters. And how many AA voters will admit to voting for Steele in an exit poll anyway

    All-in-all, Maryland is still a 2-1 Dem state and I wouldn’t place a bet on a Steele victory, although the odds might not be as long as you think.

    And yet the clothes whorse Steele, has an ad on today saying “Cardin didn’t know where the Purple Line was,” when Cardin said Chevy Chase (only 1 stop from Bethesda) and Mr. Voguing himself shows up at least 2 stops away at Grosvenor/Strathmore for his embarrassing press conference.

    Not that this has ANYTHING to do with being the US Senator from Maryland.

    I mean, did Paul Sarbanes know or care where the Purple line was going? This is a US Senate race, Mr. Men’s Wharehouse, not county exec.
