Limbaugh Tries To Clean Up His Mess

2:35 pm EST October 27th, 2006 | News | 13 Comments

The pill-popping hatemonger made fun of Michael J. Fox’s disease, and went over the line. He’s been roundly condemened for it, but yet he continues to lie about it.

I would no more do that than I would make fun of anybody who suffers a disease about which and over which — I wouldn’t make fun of anybody with a disease.

That’s what Limbaugh says.

Here’s what really happened:

Who to believe? Your own two eyes or Rush Limbaugh’s lies?

CBS received over 300 pieces of email on the piece last night from people like this woman:

As a 45-year-old daughter of a Parkinson’s Disease patient, I was obviously moved to tears by this interview, and enraged with Rush Limbaugh’s comments and mocking of Mr. Fox. My father was diagnosed with PD when he was 35 years old, and to see years of debilitation has been heart-wrenching. In this particular time of extreme polarization between Democrats and Republicans, I believe the true issues of embryonic stem cell research are being ignored.

Maybe Rush was actually shaking around because his pants were on fire.

  2. Wellstone says:

Couldn’t happen to a filthier pig.

  3. Marty says:

Rush inserted his foot in his mouth by saying that Fox was “exaggerating” and saying “it was purely and act.” Clearly wrong and condemnable.

But making fun of Fox? Unless you have the whole segment that somehow shows him making a joke about what he just did, I’d be hard pressed to say that he was making fun of Fox.

I know the outrage this statement will cause, but seriously. Watch it over and over and decide if the expression and tone was “making fun” or just criticism in front of a radio mike. Unless of course you believe the act of feigning movements automatically means he was making fun of Fox- which of course you do. It’s easier to be enraged that way.

But I do have to agree with that woman- all this attention on Rush keeps us from talking about the ads themselves, which regardless of the sypmpathetic victim, have some problems of their own.

But hey- they’re working as far as opinion on “stem cell research” goes.

Good thing that hardly anybody opposes “stem cell research.”

  4. Nimrod Gently says:

Of course he’s making fun. You wouldn’t question it at all if it was ideologically reversed.

  5. Marty says:

Making fun for what? His radio audience?

He didn’t crack a smile, nor did the tone of this voice change as though he were making a joke. Was there something in the rest of the video that shows him laughing or making light of the Fox’s condition? If so, then I will gladly agree with the statement that he was making fun of Fox.

And I would question it if it were reversed and have defended people on the left on the sincerity of their words and actions if I think the characterization is incorrect.

  6. Oliver says:

Yes, jiggling around like he did isn’t making fun of Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s at all. Man, its one thing to be partisan – it’s another to be blind.

  7. BD says:

He didn’t crack a smile, nor did the tone of this voice change as though he were making a joke.

Neither does Steven Wright. Ever. And he’s a professional frickin comedian.

  8. Jody says:

Indeed, BD. But you see, in Marty’s eyes, that’s just plain spoken political analysis. The fact that Rush said anything at all is a clever liberal ploy to distract from the fact that the GOP supports stem cell research. Okay, not to the extent the dems do, and the only people that are against it are on the right, and in fact GW’s only veto in his entire term has been on the subject, but that’s all water under the bridge. Oh, and you’re being dishonest if you point that out.

And those ads. Those horrible ads of Michael J. Fox. Clearly riddled with problems of their own. Like, he supports more stem cell research, but fails to point out the degree he supports it to, and therefore his whole point is invalidated. Clearly more liberal pap.

Marty I have no idea who you think you are impressing with your feeble talking points. That was full blown mockery. Just ask someone with Parkinson’s. The reason he did it because he knew people like you would swallow such puke and call it ice cream. And you did not disappoint him.

No wonder our country is in such bad shape.

  9. nihilistic_disintegration says:

Making fun for what? His radio audience?

Yeah, it’s not like he has a video camera on him during his show.

    Damn, you’re smart, Marty.

  10. Marty says:

Find the rest of the video. Making fun implies making a joke of it. Let’s see if he’s trying to make a joke of MJF or making a (bad) point.

Note to Jody- I don’t listen to Rush and haven’t for years just because of crap like this. As I already told you, and as you have already responded in another post, Rush was behind the curve on this discussion. It was being discussed in the blogosphere at least a full day before Rush even began to taste toenail #1.

I wrongly assumed that this was a case of MJF skipping his meds, as he said he does when he has testified before Congress. But I watched the entire interview with Katie Couric and I owned up to that error. I was wrong.

Do I still think the ad oversimplifies the issue, pulling heart strings for effect while being inaccurate in it’s claims? Yes, and I’ve thoroughly explained to you why, but rather that talk about that, you’d rather be outraged about Rush Limbaugh said and did. It’s much more powerful.

But hey- if it gives you a chance to revive your puke/ice cream analysis, I’m glad I’m there for you.

  11. Jody says:

I wouldn’t have had to break out the puke/ice cream analysis if it weren’t so apt.

The fact that you do not listen to Rush anymore does not change the fact that you came in here defending him. Think about that the next time he does something this odious.

I will agree with you that he didn’t make a joke. Not that he wasn’t trying, of course, just that it wasn’t funny. He didn’t realize he would receive such backlash for mocking a terminally ill man, and neither did you.

And I WOULD rather be outraged about you defending this pig. Because that’s what the subject was. I am not discussing Mr Fox, I am scolding you for attacking his honesty about his illness. Your claims of accuracy are nothing more than deflection. Next time you want to discuss the merits of the ads, come in and bring THAT up. You are not allowed to cry victim when you lose an argument that you began.

If you want to have an actual rational discussion that’s fine. But don’t come in defending such insipid behavior and then expect me to play nice. Troll.

  12. Jody says:

You know what? I retract my previous statement. Rush knew PRECISELY that he would receive the sort of backlash he received. He simply did not care. He knew he’d be safe in his radio station, insulated from accountability, as the chattering classes debate his odious point and dullards such as yourself leap to his defense.

His audience didn’t decline one whit for his hideous remarks, because their souls are as ugly as his.

    Think about THAT.

  13. buma says:

What marty is saying is that there would be no problem if MJF’s ad was for a Republican.
